In a couple weeks I plan to start on my BUSA Nieuport 28. I have to clean off the work bench, finish a couple other projects first, then I'll get going. I wonder if other modelers are thinking of, starting on, finished with; or, what ever stages in between on this aeroplane and would like to talk and exchange ideas, thoughts, etc. Building the 1/3rd version, or Proctor's iteration of this aeroplane? Jump right on in!

My first thought is the prototype or model used for advertizements by BUSA, colors seem wrong. Maybe too much green, or wrong color green? My Data File shows how I want to end up, anyway.

If this is a project your into, lets hear from you!

Mark

Mode,
I built the 1/4 scale BUSA version about 2 years ago. It's a very enjoyable build. Parts cut and wood quality are great, and the instructions are very well done. Follow them. Frame-up is very straightforward.
Wing alignment and strut setup was a bit of a chore for me, but it went fairly well by following the instructions and using some of the alignment skills I've acquired through work.
One thing to note - there's some crucial soldering involved in this model. The interplane struts, for instance, have to be soldered together in place. If you're not very good at soldering, get some materials and practice until you are. That's what I had to do.
I'd recommend Solartex for covering. Great stuff. I painted mine with acrylics according to the Datafile pattern (NO! the box paintjob is NOT scale!) and sprayed on a polyurethane clearcoat. It's held up very well.
Hope you enjoy building yours as much as I did mine. Feel free to PM me if you get stuck or have a question. Maybe we can both figure out a solution. Good luck.

As papermache says - easy build and a great flying model. Wing section is not scale though - should be undercambered.

Mine is leccy powered.

Balsa USA states they change things to make their airplanes better/easier flying models. There are only a few views where a person can tell that this model doesn't have an undercambered airfoil and I'm O.K. with that. I think they may have widened the landing gear stance and maybe made the nose longer. I'm unsure of these possibilities and if they have made the changes, again that's fine. I don't compete. Just love building and flying for fun.

guys,
Yes, the BUSA models have done all those things to make their models good fliers. Some people modify the changes to get them more scale. If true scale is your bag, go ahead and modify, or get a Proctor, Arizona or Glenn Torrence kit and be prepared to pay their prices. Then you get true scale.
The BUSA kits "look the part" and they fly very well. In the air it's hard to tell who's got the undercambered airfoil, true length LG or whatever else. Go with what you truly want and what your resources tell you you can afford.

I've finished one of the two projects I need to get done before starting on my N28. I'm re-reading the Data File and am thinking about which pilots plane to build, thinking Rickinbackers has been done many times.

I'll be clearcoating my Balsa USA N-28 this weekend. Power is a Saito 170-3-R.
It was an enjoyable build; however, you will quickly find contradicting information between the plans and instruction booklet. The strut construction was tricky. Incidence angles were odd. I also built 2 degrees of positive incidence into the horizontal stab.

I used automotive basecoats for the finish (only becuase I had them available) and handpainted all graphics, including roundels and the rat terriers.

I'll be posting pictures of it once assembled. Hope to test fly it in two weeks.

At another thread on this aeroplane on the Aerodrome Forum, another person also mentioned adding positive incidence to the stabilizer, stating it would help decrese the amount of down trim needed. Very interested in the trim situation with your airplane, Nick!

The positive stab incidence is fairly common with their designs. Built their DR1 last year and wished I'd added some to it. She requires quite a bit of engine down thrust, with down elevator.

The Nieuport 28 is modelled on the aircraft flown by Jimmy Meissner, as depicted on the rear cover of the Windsock International mag (vol 17 No.3).

I chose that one as it only has one M/G fitted and the number "8" is fairly easy to do using masking tape.

However the cowl stripes were not easy to do.

The bond poster on the lower wing has been a bit of a talking point at the local field.

Tmoth4 is someone else.

Tmoth4 has modeled Meissner's airplane, also. What did you do to portray the Bond poster?
