I just bought a completed Balsa USA Fokker DVII for $600 less engine and RX. Fantastic deal for an extremely well built airplane. Looking at all the threads on this airplane you will quickly realize that most of them require 2 or more lbs. of nose weight and they are often under powered. The DA-50 swinging a 24 X 8 laminated prop should cure most of those problems. The huge prop looks great on the front. The engine mount that was in the plane was full of holes so I cleared it out of the plane and sanded down to the ply. I started over with a brand new 1/2" thick firewall mounted in exactly the right spot for the DA-50. I put it in with 1 degree right thrust and 3 degrees down thrust to help reduce the tendency this plane has to climb. I used the new Mercury Adhesive M100XF CA that is formulated specifically for plywood. This stuff is unbelievable. Stronger on ply than any glue I have ever used. You need to try this stuff! The muffler was made for me this past week by Lance Bisson of Bisson Custom Mufflers in Canada. He produced exactly what I asked for. It should work great. You can see the progress where I have started to make a new cowling. Leo

A DA50 is going to fly that plane insane. In fact I'm going to be a little worried. Balsa USA warns just about every other page in the instructions to make sure you don't over power the plane. With the Zeonah G38 the plane was faster than scale by quite a bit...

When will you be maidening her?

E. Merlin,

Yes! It is pretty insane isn't it! The engine weight is good, but all that power is not needed. Speed will be my enemy. That will make the use of throttle a necessary thing in order not to rip the wings off. The sweet thing will be that I will be able to putt putt along at about 1/4 throttle behind that big 24 X 10 prop and sound just beautiful. Yet if I want to motor up for some vertical it should haul it up with authority. That beats all the other DVII's that barely climb-out on their little G-26s on full throttle. I want to get her done and get that Maiden in before Nov. 19th. The goal is to fly before winter sets in up here in Wisconsin. Leo

Yeah thats what it's like when my buddy flies his D VII on the 38. Cruises perfectly fine at 1/4 throttle...

If I remember correctly you are going to be pushing it with a 24" prop. We fly on a 19" prop and can problably get a 20" in there, but a 24" is going to be rather close to the ground when that tail comes up I think. You may want to double check just to make sure. I'll double check what we use on the G38.

Your plane is going to be scary fast... not to mention be able to pull some rather nice prop hangs.

I don't think it will be all that fast, the airframe and wing will determine top speed. I think the big engine is a great idea, to allow a much larger and closer to scale prop. The prototype turned a 2.8 meter prop (about 110 inches) so a scale prop would be 27 inches or so. I doubt you could get one that long to work, but the 24 ought to. I'd go with as low a pitch as you could find, 4 or 5, to keep your speed reasonable without having to fly at idle , plus you could really hang it on the prop. That engine installation really looks good.

I have one of these to build some day, there's two in our club and they really fly well and look awesome in the air.

I've got the new cowling done with exception to painting it. The engine fit in really well. You can see the spark plug cap right under the front cylinder of the dummy engine. I was concerned about the front screen position, but the muffler came forward and just touched the front screen.

Regarding the prop being too big as someone mentioned earlier; the 24" diameter has plenty of ground clearance. It is not even an issue. Regarding speed and being too fast. It can only go as fast as I fly it. With this airframe I don't think speed is a good idea. I'll just back off on the throttle and it will be fine. We all drive cars every day that can exceed the speed limit. That does not mean our cars are scary fast nor does it mean we exceed the speed limit.

I was once in the cockpit of Delmar Benjamin's Gee Bee R-2. I noticed 2 things. One was a small decal that looked like a road sign which said, "SPEED LIMIT 300 MPH", the other was a picture of his girlfriend. I think both were reminders that he should use the throttle conservatively and keep himself alive. It must have worked because he lived long enough to retire the airplane.

I am going to build one this winter with a poulan 46 cc engine powering it...

I have been running a BIG profile with a 46 motor on it..with a 22-8 prop it is SWEET! it flies very slow with the thick high drag wing..sounds so nice and it just lugs up in a climb slow and powerful..I think a DVII 1/4 will fly very slow with the same prop. My profile weighs 15 pounds or so, never reweighed it after the last motor swap.. Its a sorta scratch built yak.. but it will climb slow and steady vertical at about a third throttle. Propped as it is ,it does EVERYTHING slow and solid.

Since the DVII is going to be realistically low to mid 20 pounds..I think it will be a good combo, and similar to your setup...fingers crossed

Trying to finish this Fokker DVII and take it with me to the Joe Nall. We leave Tues. night and it's going to be tight. I got all the major systems figured out and mounted on the plane. Did balance today and had to add an additional 3 lbs. of lead to the nose. You can see me pouring in the epoxy lead shot mixture. The front lower part of the cowl makes a beautiful tray to hold the shot. It looks like the previous builder of the plane had about 1 lb. of shot in there already, so It probably has 4 lbs. in the nose now. Painted the new cowling I made. Strange to prime and paint right over the balsa. But after about 3 rounds of primer, spot putty and sanding it looked good. I didn't think it needed glass so I just went for it. Results look fine. Its looking great ! I am using a poulan 46cc in mine, I hope I don't have to add 3 lbs of weight but I won't be surprised if I do, everyone says they get tail heavy real fast...
