Hey,

We did a Losi Eight electric conversion for the I-Hobby show we recently attended. It was running a 6S1P (19.8V 2300mAh) pack, with a Steve Neu 1515/1Y motor powered by a CC Mamba Max (Pushed to its limits, but performs awesome). It has not been radar tested but is estimated to be in the upper 40's to low 50's miles per hour, and the handling is phenomenal.

The pack weighs roughly 16oz, runs the car for ~10 minutes, and charges in 15 minutes. The pack can be charged 1000 times, and does not risk damage if you crash.

Compared to a LiPo 2200mAh which weighs roughly 13 oz. Run time will be lower not only due to less mAh but also because of unusable energy due to the required cut off voltage.

Hope this helps.

on my stadium pro that I have right now im runnung 2 5000 mAH 7 volt packs in series and can only make 7 minutes. I know this is about 3 pounds heaver than your losi but I have double the mah. what is the relationship between voltage and amps as far as run time?

do you have a price for that battery as a starter set? thanks

Hey Auto,

I will be using a data logger to gather Voltage, Amperage, mAh, and run time for this buggy tonight. I will post it tomorrow so you can see the data. There are several reasons why the performance may be different. Motor/speed controller efficiencies, battery pack efficiencies, the weight is certainly a possibility also.

As far as the pack goes, I am using 2 of our 9.9V 2300mAh packs in series. The 9.9V starter kit which includes 2 batteries and a charger is $279.95.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Brian will still have to post the data for you, but I drove the buggy last night for about ten minutes on the indoor track at RC Excitement and it performed very well. The Eagle Tree recorder came disconnected a few times but I expect that it still captured good data.

The buggy performed well with the setup Brian listed above and will be even better once drag brake is programmed out of the Mamba Max.

Hey Guys,

Here is the data for the Losi Eight Conversion. Specs are on the top of the graph.

Just to Sum Up:

Run Time 17 minutes,
Average Amps 15.4
Average Watts 99.7 (Peak at 532)
Capacity used ~1900mAh

The packs were not topped off so the run time should be longer when it uses 2300mAh.

so maybe 20 minute run time. excellent. do you have the 2 packs in the back on each side? I have a motor mount from rc monster and can't put 2 packs in the back. would have to have one on the left front and one on the right rear. may be balance issue? or get a different style motor mount? hummm.......:-)

Hey Auto,

There are two packs on the left side to counter weigh the motor mount. The buggy is balanced perfectly and flies really well.

Check out the picture I attached.

Brian,
I am working on a project buggy conversion. My Sportwerks Turmoil Pro is similar in size with your Losi eight project. I have a Mamba Max ESC with Fiegao 540C-8XL, 13Tpignon/46Tspur and currently running 2 6cells NiMh 3600mAh in series while in test stage. I want to upgrade to your A123 cells as soon as the set-up is completed. I was thinking about going with a single 4 cell pack (available on e-bay) or 2 of your 6.6v packs in series with your sonic charger.
Your 19.8v set-up makes me think again....
Wouldn't your 19.8v set-up be on the high side for the Mamba Max?
how would the 19.8v set-up compare with a 13.2v set-up?
Would a 2cell pack in series with a 3cell pack (16.5v) be a good compromise?

2nd question as I have limited knowledge on gearing electric: what pignon/spur are you running on the eight for this kind of performance (17 minutes and 45mph top speed)?

Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.

Jean-Claude

I am doing the 1/8 scale brushless thing right now. I have an MBX5 with the following conversion on it right now:

RCProductDesigns MBX5 conversion
Maxamps 6000mah lipo 4S 14.8V pack
Castle Creations Mamba Max ESC
RC Monster UBEC
MRC 989 Charger with LBA10+ Balancer

Now, I have a few questions:

1. What total amount of cells would be needed to have a 4600mah 13.2V A123 pack?

2. What kind of runtime could I expect with a 4600mah 13.2V A123 pack?

3. What would the weight of a 4600mah 31.2V A123 pack be?

4. What dimensions could I expect for the pack?

5. For those new 2200mah packs (as shown in RC Driver for the IFS TA05 review), what configuration could be down to get close to 13.2V pack with 4000mah+ rating?

The E-MBX5 conversion runs the current Max amps lipo down one side, and the electronics on the other similar to the picture from a previous poster.

And as a suggestion, A123 should really get on the ball with getting more info posted on the forums. There is ALOT of interest right now in Lipo in general, and with the safety that the A123 packs have, they could easily become the top player in electric RC.

Right now its common that guys are doing a 14.8V setup and are getting the speeds they are looking for. you best bet may be to go with a higher Kv motor for the speed you need in combination with a 13.2V setup, as this is very close to the 14.8V setups used right now for the more common lipo conversions. this is what I am thinking as well.

Main thing, I need a minimum of 24 minutes of runtime since mains here can go between 15 and 20 minutes. I was entertaining a 8000mah lipo for 30+, but if A123 can get me something that will do the job an is inherently safter, i'll go with that.
