Another usage that I found for my A123 is as a starting pack (4 cells) for my Sullivan starter. The 4 cells fit comfortably inside the Sullivan battery holder. High current means plenty of torque for the starter, and the lack of self discharge means that you don't need to recharge it every week before going flying! Ben

Great idea, a friend of mine has made the economy version with A123 cells. Used by just about everyone at our recent club 40 races - and was still going strong at the end of the day.

I run a Tower Hobbies Heavy Duty starter on 5s A123's and use it to start my 33cc Homelite conversion engine. I love it.

When I read the thread title I thought it was referring to a glow plug igniter. Since it is closely related, I hope this isn't thread hijacking to post pics of my a123 glow plug lighter. I just made this up at the end of the flying season so haven't had a lot of actual use yet but it seems like it should work well, and won't always be dead when I go to use it like my Nicd igniter. I simply installed 2 diodes in line to drop the voltage and have measured voltage at the plug at 1.3 -1.5 volts. Hopefully it won't burn out plugs, it hasn't hurt my test plug so far which is an old used plug that had been flown in an engine for quite a while. The diodes on this one are the 3 amp from Radio Shack and they get pretty warm if you leave the plug attached for a while but seem to be holding up ok. The first one I built (which I sold to a fellow club member) used the 6 amp RS diodes but they were out of those when I went back. Mike

How are you charging them?

YLF, Thanks for the suggestion on the ignition starter using the A123 cell and the diodes. I did not even think about doing that but it make so much sense now! Using a Dean connector is also a great idea. Thanks Ben

I just finished building a 4s1p VPX pack to power my Hangar 9 starter. My Astro Flight meter shows it is pulling 33 watts at 12.76 volts with no load on the starter. Under the load of cranking a well broken in Saito 91, it pulls 140 watts at 11.95 volts, but it is able to sustain long enough to get the easy starting Saito running. I don't know what those numbers mean---just reporting them in the hopes that someone will comment. What's really nice is that with the recently installed 42% Products glo-igniter (works great---$24.95), all I need to fly now is gas, starter, plane and radio. Ain't technology great.

They are rated for 30A cont. so yours should last a very long time at these levels. The Foamie aircraft I fly them in pull up to 30A burst and the average amp. load for a 8 min. flight is just over 7. Charles
