Let's face it boys as long as there is judges making human decisions there will be controversy. I just like looking at all the planes and what type of equipment is being used. It is amazing that so many people from such diverse backrounds can share a common interest. Let's just join together in the brotherhood and interests that we share. I'm going to forget about national pride and focus on the spectical that this is. Pattern is such a cool sport to be involved in. Mike Mueller

Amen to that Mike!!!!

One of the best times I have ever had was when I went to Aruba to compete in a pattern competition down there. It was so much fun....just wow. I really miss those guys. if I could talk them into doing a contest again, I would make sure enough people came to make it worth the effort. it's just so much fun!!!

Alright....Flame suit on....Y'all started it, but here's my take...

Excuuuuuuse me...those are CLEARLY NOT flip-flops that JAS is wearing, they are sandals. Please get it right!!

Flip-Flops have the little v-shaped thing that goes between the big and middle toes...

Richard

I find it amusing that Jason is wearing footwear at ALL....he usually flies barefooted, like me and a few others. We have one of our own at the worlds! POWER TO THE BAREFOOTED BROTHERHOOD!!!!!

Yeah we seriously need some scores or somethin. More pics!!!!! I want to know more about the planes. Detail shots...lots of them!

I was at the finals for the WC in VA. I forget who won but in my book Matt (I forget which one) won the contest hands down.

I talked to him afterwards and told him my thoughts. His response to me was one I'll always remember.

"It doesn't matter, if I let those thoughts enter into my mind It would destroy my hobby that I love so much. I'd miss all the friends I've made over my lifetime and that would be the worse of the two"

Class act to be sure.

Words to live by.

I know a few pilots who could benefit greatly from this approach.

On the subject of judging for a moment, I can say we do the best we can. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we get it wrong. Our job is simple: ignore everything except the plane flying in front of you, and apply the downgrades as you see them. PERIOD.

A few judges have taken some serious flak lately, and that really grates me. Nothing is worse than doing the very best you can, as a volounteer, and being told we are incompetent, biased or otherwise unqualified.

You're welcome.

That's why I don't envy the guys in the chair next week. because no matter how good of a job they do, no matter how hard they work at it, someone will claim they are incompetent, biased, unqualified, or something. I consider it fair game to joke and tease, it's human nature and it's harmless. But you know somebody will have a problem...a real one....

I find it absolutely disgusting that a judge at the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS would judge any other way than directly from the FAI guide book. That somehow who you are should make a difference in any conceivable way. Worse, it seems people accept this as being OK for some reason. The person who flies the best should win, regardless of who they are, how many judges know their name, or what country they're from.

Amen Doug.

Hi,

I like exactly this way of judging!
Human factors like the judging, is a part of the game, and the fun, specially for the spectators.

In fact; it is the spectators that keep this kind of sport allive! ( indirectly )

What about a football game ( or a similar type of game) without the judge out there ? The commite would say after the game : "And the result will be announced next week when the replay have been study, and thorougly measured apon every sector etc"

hmm, i wonder how many spectators would show up or been followed with interest ... ?

Agree with you guys; this is a game and sport we all share together, and have so much fun!!!

Kjell Olav

That flying out of the box is just a tactic the US is using to sucker everyone into thinking we are unprepared. I hope so anyway. Go USA

Hello Mike,

This is calvin Lim online.
How are you? Glad you enjoyed the competition in Aruba.
Well for the last 2 year , pattern was kind of down with only me and Luis flying pattern, but we've got some new and old blood back this year.

As a matter of fact , Gregory is in Argentinia right now with the Colombian group ( Not to compete but to help and get some experience for 2009
I told him to get me a WC2007 shirt with all the top flyers signature or else he isn't allow to come back home.

Hope to see you in the near future.

C .Lim

Wow, joking or not you Americans certainly know how to put the needle in! Is this preparation incase an American does not win? Why not create your own version of flying/sport that nobody else follows then you can be World Champions every year! (Wait... hang on...)

My country has little chance in this but at least I can claim we invented RC. Didn't we invent everything anyway? Or was that ruled the world. Once.

I say good luck to all and lets hope the profile of RC and especially Pattern Flying is raised so all can enjoy it a little more.

An American has some chance of winning but I would say it's a small chance. Just look at the last several WC's and you'll get an idea of how they stacked up. As far as having more judges from US, the same would hold true from Japan, France and the other couple in the top 5. So why would you even think that an American would be favored?? You....gentlemen just love to twist what ever meaning you want out of any written word... so be it

I thought the pre-Nazi Germans invented RC

Just as a point of history, R/C is quite American.

A radio controlled boat was demonstrated by Nikola Tesla (a Serbian immigrant, to be fair) in 1898 at Madison Square Garden.

The first R/C airplane was built and used by the American Navy during WWI one of those airplanes can be seen in the US Airforce Museum in Wright Paterson AFB.

Hello

Pics of Argentina and French team practises.
There is a lot of dust on the field so Pierre Carrier launched the plane.

I think you and many others are missing my point here.

I don't care who wins, or from what country. It should just be the pilot who's flown the best, whether they've been to 10 WC's or this is their 1st. I hear too many people saying 'this person can't win because it's his 1st time there' which is ridiculous. Sad fact is it's also true, which is what I'm upset about.

Let the flying decide who wins, not some arbitrary unpublished 'paid your dues' criteria.
