sevans16 -> Saito 220 or OS FS200 (11/4/2007 11:21:48 PM)

Does anyone have experience with both of these engines? I am leaning towards the OS as it is lighter but I have not seen many real world numbers on performance? Would the Saito 220 be worth the more weight?

Harry Lagman -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (11/4/2007 11:33:38 PM)

How much engine weight does your model need to balance?

Ken6PPC -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (11/4/2007 11:47:34 PM)

Like Harry said, if you NEED the extra weight, it might be best to have it in the engine. However, if you don't, well, nearly 11-1/2 ounces you don't have to pull around the sky is like a free lunch!

I don't have any personal experience with either of those engines, but as a side note, I am glad to see OS keeping the weight down!

I do hate the look of that 2S-type muffler though.... Why is OS going with those ugly mufflers?

Edited for typo - AGAIN..... [:'(]

GarySS -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (11/5/2007 1:20:04 AM)

Well, with all of the discounts and new lower price that OS has on their 200s I went ahead and bot one for an UltraRC Giles. SOme owners have reported more than 18 pounds of thrust with 30% nitro so I am hoping for about 18pounds with 20%. Won't know until probably next spring tho................[8|]

We had one at the field last weekend. Running YS 20/20 fuel and an APC 18x8W prop . I don't remember the tach numbers, but it was swinging the APC 18x8w about 300 rpm higher than the OS 1.60 was on the same prop. I think it was about 8700 dropped from a peak of 8900 RPM.

Only one tank through so he'll probably see close to 9K static in a bit.

That's some great thrust from a 35 ounce package, and way smoother compared to the Saito, and much better throttle response than the 1.60.

Amen to that. I'm not a real big fan of the new Saito "garbage can" mufflers, either.

GarySS -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 2:46:15 AM)

Warren, Thats great news! I calculate 18.9 pounds of thrust using the 8,700 18x8 figure. That is from RC Report magazine's calculation of an engine that swings a 18x8 Zinger at 8,600 so an APC should be even better! Thanks for the information!!!

Rate1 -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 3:00:57 AM)

I got the FS200 but haven't runned it yet as the frame is not finished built. As said, dependant upon what plane to use it in, do you need the weigh up front or not. I am sure both engines are real stump pullers and great running if correctly tuned.

ajcoholic -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 3:33:03 AM)

I do have personal experience (having reviewed and flown both engines) with both. The Saito is slightly stronger than the O.S. but the O.S. is smoother and IMO better behaved - mind you both engines run great. The O.S. 200 is still smoother... and of course weighs a lot less.

If I had to choose, I would go with the OS based on overall running characteristics. If I needed a little extra weight or every bit of power, I would choose the Saito. I dont think you will be dissapointed with either.

AJC

PS who the hell cares what the mufflers look like. The important thing is that both companies are making good, solid, baffled mufflers that actually workd well at reducing noise levels.

Valve floater -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 5:35:31 AM)

In my opinion i want to look at the new Satio f-36 gas. I know it is on the same housing as the 220 and i think it is a slight step down in power. But think of the glow fuel a 220 would suck down! When you move up to a glow engine that size, to me, it begins to be not feasible in fuel costs. That F-36 looks sweet. I would like to put it in that hanger 9 - 150 size Mustang!

I care. Have a nice day.

PS - Who the hell cares what FlyRC magazine thinks. The important thing is that RCU offers an excellent alternative to industry puppet magazines [:D].

w8ye -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 3:14:57 PM)

Lets get back to discussing the virtues of one engine over another and leave off the spit spat!

I'll start deleting posts and lock the thread up otherwise.

MOTORMAN37 -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 6:36:29 PM)

Comparing two different model engines is fair game as far as I am concerned. People should be able to express there opinions, both pro's and con's with out it being labled non model related. If it wasn't model related I would not be logged onto RCU. As far as i am concerned RCU is not to much different than the industry puppet magazines. Post a thread that exposes a company in a negative way with there shaky advertising or marketing, and watch how fast it gets shut down and described as non model related. The manufactures pay for the advertising, and it seams more and more that it is becomming a manufactures forum site. This is just my opinion, but I have experienced it a few times.

I will take the Saito any day of the week, just because I like the parent company (distributer)much better. They advertise there products for the RC MODLER more honestly as far as I am concerned[:D]

reincarnate -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/12/2007 10:27:05 PM)

I wonder if the OS is as thirsty as the Saito. I've got the 220, and man can that thing drain a gallon of fuel, but what an engine!!

The owner says it's pulling about the same fuel as the replaced OS 1.60. No more than an ounce more per 10 minute flight on YS 20/20.

He was running the OS 1.60 on 15%.

Ran today on the 15% with the 200 and only lost about 50-75 RPM so he'll be using that fuel from now on.

blw -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/13/2007 1:41:56 AM)

Motorman37- W8YE was referring to something different. You missed the point that he wanted the thread to get back to the comparisons. In fact, he asked that we get back to that very thing.

I can guarantee you that there is never, ever any hint, suggestion, comment, or any other form of communication about a single company, product of manufacturer made to the moderators. Your comments are plain wrong and that's the end of it. We do moderate when needed when spamming, advertising more than the rules allow, or product bashing occurs. If you go and read the rules to advertisers, you will see that they don't get too much consideration on RCU. They are very limited on their interactions in the forums.

You can visit any of the engine forums and find criticism of most any model product out there, and it goes on freely if not an attempt to just bash.

togatoga -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/13/2007 11:54:31 AM)

I have both engines and I'd go for the OS200 as my favourite.Its light, vibrates less, is quieter,the muffler is more versatile,is less costlier and drinks less fuel.
The saito has greater power by virtue of the extra capacity but is bulky and heavy.I would use the saito if I had an application where i need to swing a large prop and could do with a bit of nose weight.
Both engines are well made though- thats why i bought them i guess!!

I'm considering the OS 200, how is the muffler more versatile? I agree with Ken6PPC, thats one ugly muffler.

togatoga -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 6:03:40 PM)

The OS muffler has an exhaust outlet that is rotatable and about 45 degrees from the centre like their 2 stroke counterparts unlike the saito where the exhaust outlet is centred.This allows the engine when side mounted , to have the muffler turned in and exhaust facing down and enclosed in the cowl.You can't do that with a saito.And the silencer is pretty effective too.

I don't agree. With an angled header pipe, and the angled inlet on the Saito muffler, I can position the outlet on my Saito muffler in nearly any position I can imagine.

blw -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 9:08:47 PM)

You can get the flex pipe for Saitos too.

Ken6PPC -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 9:15:08 PM)

I don't know for certain, but I imagine that OS flex pipes would work on the 200 as well.

blw -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 9:34:57 PM)

I've seen one on an OS 1.20

Ken6PPC -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 9:46:15 PM)

Take a look at the dimensions of the muffler for the OS 200:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRPT9&P=Z

1.8" wide and 5.7" long.

If I were buying an OS 200, I'd just go ahead and order a flex pipe at the same time. But, that would pretty much eliminate any price difference between the Saito 220 and the OS 200. The OS still has a weight advantage though......

Edited to add:

Crap! I couldn't find a flex pipe listed for the OS 200.

Ken6PPC -> RE: Saito 220 or OS FS200 (12/16/2007 9:48:20 PM)

Yes, I have one on an OS 120. I wonder if the threads are the same? Anyone know?
