Sent a PM, Slim. I think we'll be able to walk you through the plans interpretation if you can post some pics. Jim

With the requests for copies of the plans for this model, I was wondering if anyone has made full size copies of plans before? I'd guess these are about 48"x48" and it's one sheet front and back. I don't know how widespread Kinko's/Fedex copy centers are but maybe they can make good copies of this size for a reasonable price.

If anyone has advice, please let me know!

I got a bottle of Titebond White Glue and I'm back at home studying plans again. I've been having a hard time getting an image of how the fuselage sides are built up. The plans show them as hidden line (dashed) and I just don't get it yet. I'm not going to put glue to wood until I do. I'll try to get a picture of the area posted shortly.

More soon...

RE Glue's to use. I would suggest the "Tightbond II, using the procedure listed in a previous post. Get some 30 Minute Epoxy (2 Part) for the motor mounts and wing center section joint and dih. brace. CA Thin and Medium are a good choice for those things that fit well and you don't need to sand for the finish (covering).

Always vent the area where you are using the CA and Epoxy. A fan exhausting through a partially open window works for me. The new Mercury CA is great stuff. It has a neet cap system, so it never plugs. Mercury will GT the glue for 2 years according to their advertising. I have some Thin, Med. and Thick and they are the best I've used so far.

Tightbond III is another very good glue to use, it's water proof and seems to be a bit stronger than Tightbond II.

All this talk about "Old Kits" got me to looking at a kit I picked up from a quy that was getting out of RC a year or two ago, it's an "Astro Hog", 72" wingspan. I guess I'll have to build it.

Cheers all! Hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!!!

I've been having a great holiday and even had some time to play around with the new digital camera I got for Christmas. I finally got a few shots of my VK Cherokee Babe Kit and the highly coveted plans. I'm still looking into making full size copies of the plan. I thought it was one sheet front and back but it turns out it's only one page front side only. There are a couple of other pages but those are 8 1/2" X 11" and 11" x 17" so I can just make copies at the office. If anyone has any suggestions for places and prices on making copies of full size plans, please let me know.

Here are the first couple of shots!

So I spent part of the day looking over the plan and again trying to get a good picture in my head of how the fuselage side is built up. If you check the Flying Knights Forum thread above that shows the fuselage sides for the VK Cherokee, you can see that it has a flat side, a few formers for strength, and a triangular piece at the top. I can generally make out the triangular piece on the plan as a hidden (dashed) line but not much else jumps out at me. I haven't pulled everything out of the box yet and set pieces to each "section" aside since I'm at my girlfriends house. She's great but not super "build-friendly". She did buy me a new overhead lamp with magnifying glass for Christmas that stays at her place so there is still hope but I digress.

I've added the following images in hopes of getting some opinions and advice on building up the two fuselage sides. If this isn't enough detail and some other shots are necessary, let me know.

Thanks for any help in advance!!!!

And a Happy New Year to you too!

If you dont have a building board yet, a pine shelf board longer and wider than the wing/fuselage, will work well. Iron the plans flat using a small towel under the iron. Get a roll of wax paper. Get another piece of wood to make cuts on.

Usually, the fuselage begins with a box type method, using the firewall/or the first former behind the firewall, and all formers that extend to the trailing edge of the wing.

Locate these formers, along with any top and bottom sheeting, and see how they line up to begin.

Of course, you can always read the instructions, and hope that they were written by a builder!

X-Acto fine tooth saw really helps, especially when making cross bracing. All braces should fit snug.

Sanding block, X-Acto #11 knife, Pins, masking tape (for joining sheets), Steel Straight edge, 90 Degree Triangle for alignment, white glue, 30 and 5 minute epoxy, tickets to a show for the GF!

Hello Slim,

Tired to PM you with some pictures, but the picture JPEG files (even at 1.3 MB resolution) were too large, so will post a few pics this way. At 6MB max per upload, tha's a lot of posts, so if you send an email (via pm) I can send a separate e-mail with a gallery of shots.

In the pics below, I marked hinge points (X), and the position of wing ribs is marked in black.

White "globs" in the fuse interior are corn starch, we're still soaking out the castor oil.

It sounds like fuse pics would be helpful, let me know if there is anything specific I can focus on.

Brgds

safeTwire: Thanks for the advice. The girlfriend loves the tickets to a show idea. Fortunately I like the classic story of Sweeney Todd so I'm going to introduce her to the original stage show before she sees the movie with Johnny Depp. I get a full week of building at my discretion for that one. Great idea! Back to the build though, I have just about everything i need for the build except a clear picture of the first step in the build. There are very limited instructions. A single page with very little to say. The section on the fuselage build is only a few short paragraphs. As I said earlier in the thread, I just don't feel comfortable putting glue to wood until I feel I have it clear in my head. I'm going to spend the next few hours I get free studying an isometric view of the parts on the back of the instruction sheet. Hoping it helps me clear up things up.

flightprep: COOL! Thanks for the pics. Look for my PM. If you have any good shots of the inside of the fuse from the opening for the wing to the tail, please post them to the thread.

For those looking for updates on plans, I'm going to iron the plan tonight and get pricing. If its not too high, I'll go ahead and make two.

Cheers!

Unfortunately, you just can't read that text. I thought with a 12 megapixel digital camera you would be able to make it out. Sorry folks. Any photographers out there? I'll try to get a shot of the isometric view on the back later tonight.

Take your time S_P! I wouldn't put glue to anything before I were sure also! Believe it or not...all this pondering and head scratching is part of the FUN of building!

Can you scan the instructions?

I think I can. I didn't think of that. I've been studying the isometric view today and few things are starting to stand out from the plan. I couldn't build this from just the plan. I'll try to get a scan of both sides of the instruction sheet and I still need to get to the copy shop.

In the mean time, here is a pic of the isometric view for your web surfing pleasure:

Hi slim, I built a Cherokee Babe many years ago. It was the second RC plane I built and probably the 6th or 7th plane overall. Along with the tools that safeTwire suggested I recommend you purchase a small wood plane. The top of the fuselage will have to be rounded quite a bit and a small plane will speed the process. Try a Stanley 12-101. They are inexpensive and will cut down a lot of sanding. Shape the top of the fuse prior to attaching the vertical fin, use the windsheild as a template to get the proper shape.

The two things I remember most about the plane was that it was a good flyer and ground handling was a cinch. That, and it won't fly it through trees.
