Well, after a month off, I am back to work on this. Primer all removed, new coat of epoxy primer, wet sanded with 400, and this past w/e I shot the white. Came out pretty good, then I bumped the vertical stab tip (Grrrr). ALso had to adjust the wing saddle a bit, maybe you can see it in the photo. I will re-shoot those two areas when I re-do the wing (see next post). Since I will be clear-coating it, the overspray can be sanded out easily.

Yea, the wing. When I used the centering tool to mark the hinge slots, I dented the TE and didn't notice it. Auto glaze filled the depression, and I will re-shoot the wing hopefully this coming w/e. Photo is a bit off focus.
Now I am trying to think of a simple brake setup. In the past I've used fuel tubing on the gear leg as a friction device, that's the way I'm leaning now. Any better ideas?

OK, I sneaked a bit of time on Mothers Day w/e (read - Saturday) and re-shot the white touchup that was needed. Looking good to me, but not a perfect job like 8178. Man, I take my hat off to him.
So tonight I assembled the wing to the body, and did a last alignment check of the wing to the stab, photo below. Luckily, it all looks good.

Well, since it was assembled and all, why not get a good 3/4 view with the canopy (yes, the yellow one) and the fuel hatch in place. Damn, I can't wait to shoot color this w/e.

So I can't wait, I gotta paint!
Here's a couple of shots of the tail. I used Frisket paper folded double to cut out the design for both sides, then made sure there was enough area masked off to prevent overspray. The photos kinda tell it all.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Moving on to the wing, I spent an hour masking it off, sealing the edges, etc etc. Went to shoot the paint, and found out that the Indigo Blue is sort of, well, translucent. Didn't notice it on the rudder (all white background), but on the bottom of the wing, which has yellow and some white bleed, it is painfully obvious that I can't let the paint stay this way. The only solution is to spray white over the yellow, then spray blue. A multi-day process which will add a couple of weeks to the end of this project. Damn!

I just had a nice conversation with the Klass Kote people, very helpful.
The Indigo Blue tends to have the pigment settle to the bottom. Although I shook the can for what I thought was enough, evidently it is not. It forms a sludge that needs to be re-incorporated for the paint to behave properly.
At least I won't have to shoot white now.

The plane is looking fantastic!!! Keep the photos coming.
Some of Brodak's dope colors are that way, too. I also shook a can for ten minutes only to find that I still had to stir it with a stick. The solids in his primer really separate. I'm relatively new to spraying paint and I've learned 99.9% of what little I know from mistakes. By my 20th plane things should go pretty smooth.

Shake, Shake, Shake.....
Yea, and then stir, stir, stir,
Shake, Shake, Shake.....
etc. etc.
Finally got all the sludge re-incorporated into the paint. Now the stirring stick comes out solid rather than "casper" style. So I'm as good to go as it can be. Mixed it up, let the paint "incorporate" per instructions, and sprayed away!
The result is still a bit dependant on the base coat. I can accept this, but thank God most people won't look at the bottom, only the top.
