Again this is the Official A123 Racing Support Forum!

The others you mentioned at not capable of 20C cont. discharge with 40 plus C burst and are not capable of being charged at 5S plus. Fact is I charge A123 racing cells at 10C on a routine bases.

Where are the 300 plus cycle (flights) data for the other cells while being used in high C applications and being discharged to 80 to 100% DOD?

I didn't see too much success with A123 1100's being used at 22 amps continuous. I missed the 300 plus cycles data too. I'll take a deeper look.

Sorry to clog the A123 thread, next time I'll start a new post or post in a more appropriate thread.

I bought a VPX battery at Home Depot yesterday and was told HD would no longer stock them due to lack of floor space.
I went to Lowes and the clerk had no idea what they were.

Looks like A123 has a nice pack that fits a standard subC (6 cell) battery opening or tray.

Hmm, I'm considering dumping lipos and going to these 1100x2
Can't find any pricing yet.

Hello all,
in a German Forum i have heared that A123 has bought a japanese company wich makes Lipo cells. At the fair in Nuernberg they showed cells in Plastik flat style with 3300 Mah and 16 Ah and also 32 Ah.All A123 technology powered. So why not a word here?

Ups, update....
it was a Korean Manufactor - Enerland sorry.

The LiFePO4-Technik and the company A123 seem to develop itself further however - which last autumn not yet was so clear. A123 bought the well-known, Korean LiPo manufacturer Enerland over the winter. From co-operation the first LiFePO4-Zellen in bags was to be seen on the Nuernberger fair: also as 3.3V indicated, but on the capacity very similar weights referred as LiPo cells. Laid out 3300mAh, 16AH and 32Ah-Zellen. Target group for the large cells are clearly electric road vehicles, the small would be which for the model construction range.

Any one charging the 1,100 cells on a routine basis at up to 8.5 Amps?
May be Everydayflyer? Any thoughts about using a cooling fan to get
at an 8.5 Amp charging rate to help mitigate cell heating? In essence,
blow cool air directly onto the pack as it is being charged at 8 Amps
or so...

Well, let's see. Could the Senior Telemaster haul six of the 16ah cells? I currently have about 9.2ah stuffed in there.

Really though, when a car comes out with this same proven A123 technology I would buy it.

Everydayflyer, it's your job to figure out how we are going to zip charge our cars then. Could we have a custom transformer made for use with the grid and plug it directly into our cars? That would be easy when the utility companies switch their technology to DC for power transmission. Maybe we wouldn't even need a transformer then, just connect directly to the utlity pole using a length of wire!!!!!

I had figured that A123 will start making "soft" cells. I had seen a picture of a 3300 pack that looked like a LiPO brick. Squared edges so assuming it was a 2S3P pack of 1100's would not work leaving me to think it was truely a new cell on the market. I had also seen the new 2200mah packs, but it was easy to figure out they were 1100 cells in a 2S2P configuration.

As soon as the cells are available, I would like to start using them for a replacement pack in oval. The LiPO's suck in oval not because of the batteries because everything is now brushless and the motors have KV's lower than 1000 because of the torque. I would rather have a 6.6V pack in oval than a 7.4V pack when it comes to replacing 4.8V NiMH

ORIGINAL: A123 Racing

Hello All,

Sorry I was not able to Pipe in earlier, but I don’t spend a great deal of time on the Forums over the weekends. The VPX packs from Black and Decker do indeed have our newest 18650 cell. It is the same M1 chemistry that is so popular in our 26650 Cell.

To answer a few questions that have popped up so far:

1. Beware that the Cathode (positive) is now on the button end of the cell, like a normal battery. The case is negative and Live, so watch out for shorts.
2. Charge rates over 5C will most certainly have an impact on Cycle life.
3. Normal use cycle life is up to 1000 cycles similar to the 26650.
4. A123Racing will be offering standard packs with these cells soon.
5. The charging of these cells will be addressed, Most likely a new rev of the Sonic Charger, with a 5A/10A switch and 4S capabilities.

I guess that does it for now, let me know if you have any other questions.

Power . Safety . Life

Brian

I have a Sonic Charger. I would like to modify it to charge the B&D VPX batteries. You mentioned the new rev of the Sonic Charger may have a 5A/10A switch. What would be involved to add such a switch to the current Sonic Charger?

Wait, so...LiFePO4 chemistry in a softer, LiPo-like format? Did I read that correctly? Interesting due to the higher capacity, apparently more standard size/shape (compared to the 2300 cells at least). But what about the durability and other good aspects of A123? Maybe the cells are not physically soft, but are prismatic as opposed to cylindrical.

Brian making a statement like that is kinda like me saying I hardley ever go to Disney worl in the summer. To the best of my knowledge he has not posted in this Forum in months.

I started this Thread on 11-06 07 and he posted that on 11-12-07 and has not posted since unles I missed one which is unlikely.

Hate to say it but it seems like A123 Racing support which was marginal at best has gotten worse during the past six months or so.

Charles,

Lava rock inserted a quote from me that I made on November 12th. I have not been posting recently, primarily because our A123Users are very good at supporting each other ( you play a significant role in this). When a questions is specifically pointed towards me or I see that no one has be able to supply an accurate answer the I do not hesitate to chime in.

Hi Brian,

OK Let's try a different question.

I just checked and the A123 Racing Site
http://www.a123racing.com/html/hypersonic.html
has no listings for packs built with the 1100 mAh cells. Are there plans to offer these and if so when. The Cells have been on the market (B&D VPX packs) and at other vendors for about 6 or 8 months now.

You mentioned earlier that Sonic Charger may be revised to include a 5A mode for the 1100 cells and also increased to 4S capabilities, any update on this ?

OT a bit.

A123 Systems purchased(?) Enerland many months ago. Many of us know that they have produced some of the better LiPoly cells / packs for the past 6-8 years (roughly). Some of us allso know fsoft pack(LiPoly style) LiFePO4 type) cells are being produced by other manufactures. Does A123 Systems have plans to produce / marke such LiFePO4 packs in sizes compariable to those LiPolys currently in use by R/Cers?

Charles,

The 1100mAh packs to be released by A123Racing are in the production process. We expect to have them released end of spring / early summer. There is also work being done on a New charger capable of charging both the 1100 and the 2300mAh. We hope to have this released in a similar time frame.

As far as a soft LiPo style A123Racing cell is concerned. There was a Prismatic A123Racing 3300mAh cell on display at Nuremberg. That being said, there is no slated production schedule or release date.

When the new 1100mAh packs are released there will be an update to the website with new production items and specs, as well as news on future products.

Let me just say that a LiPo-style prismatic A123 cell would be quite appealing to me if it maintained some of the nice characteristics of the current cells (durability, cycle life, etc.).

I have had trouble balancing an 1100 A123 pack with the fma cellpro 4s. I could ballance the pack using a resistor to lower the high voltage cell and charging the pack again (with several iterations). So I sent the battery and charger to FMA. They returned both saying there is a bad cell in the pack.

I bought another pair of 1100 cells and am getting the same results: a 300 mv difference between cells. What is wrong?

How many charge-discharge cycles do you have on your packs? I and others I have read about in various forums have found that it takes 5-10 cycles before they "come-in" and settle down. I now have 4 each 2s packs that I series up for 4s packs and 2 each 3s packs. I just check them every so often and they very rarely need any attention. I have maybe 40 or so cycles on the 2s packs and 25 or so on the 3s packs and couldnt be happier with the performance!!!!

Happy Flying

My older pack has 25+ cycles and the ballancer gets the voltage to 3.25 and 3.59v.

Are those voltages right before end of charge or a few minutes after charging?

It is normal for the cells to settle a little but 3.25 is low. Around 3.45 is normal in my experience.

The voltages are after 20 minutes of balancing and while the cellpro is still connected
