Again this is the Official A123 Racing Support Forum!

The others you mentioned at not capable of 20C cont. discharge with 40 plus C burst and are not capable of being charged at 5S plus. Fact is I charge A123 racing cells at 10C on a routine bases.

Where are the 300 plus cycle (flights) data for the other cells while being used in high C applications and being discharged to 80 to 100% DOD?

I didn't see too much success with A123 1100's being used at 22 amps continuous. I missed the 300 plus cycles data too. I'll take a deeper look.

Sorry to clog the A123 thread, next time I'll start a new post or post in a more appropriate thread.

I bought a VPX battery at Home Depot yesterday and was told HD would no longer stock them due to lack of floor space.
I went to Lowes and the clerk had no idea what they were.

Looks like A123 has a nice pack that fits a standard subC (6 cell) battery opening or tray.

Hmm, I'm considering dumping lipos and going to these 1100x2
Can't find any pricing yet.

Hello all,
in a German Forum i have heared that A123 has bought a japanese company wich makes Lipo cells. At the fair in Nuernberg they showed cells in Plastik flat style with 3300 Mah and 16 Ah and also 32 Ah.All A123 technology powered. So why not a word here?

Ups, update....
it was a Korean Manufactor - Enerland sorry.

The LiFePO4-Technik and the company A123 seem to develop itself further however - which last autumn not yet was so clear. A123 bought the well-known, Korean LiPo manufacturer Enerland over the winter. From co-operation the first LiFePO4-Zellen in bags was to be seen on the Nuernberger fair: also as 3.3V indicated, but on the capacity very similar weights referred as LiPo cells. Laid out 3300mAh, 16AH and 32Ah-Zellen. Target group for the large cells are clearly electric road vehicles, the small would be which for the model construction range.

Any one charging the 1,100 cells on a routine basis at up to 8.5 Amps?
May be Everydayflyer? Any thoughts about using a cooling fan to get
at an 8.5 Amp charging rate to help mitigate cell heating? In essence,
blow cool air directly onto the pack as it is being charged at 8 Amps
or so...

Well, let's see. Could the Senior Telemaster haul six of the 16ah cells? I currently have about 9.2ah stuffed in there.

Really though, when a car comes out with this same proven A123 technology I would buy it.

Everydayflyer, it's your job to figure out how we are going to zip charge our cars then. Could we have a custom transformer made for use with the grid and plug it directly into our cars? That would be easy when the utility companies switch their technology to DC for power transmission. Maybe we wouldn't even need a transformer then, just connect directly to the utlity pole using a length of wire!!!!!

I had figured that A123 will start making "soft" cells. I had seen a picture of a 3300 pack that looked like a LiPO brick. Squared edges so assuming it was a 2S3P pack of 1100's would not work leaving me to think it was truely a new cell on the market. I had also seen the new 2200mah packs, but it was easy to figure out they were 1100 cells in a 2S2P configuration.

As soon as the cells are available, I would like to start using them for a replacement pack in oval. The LiPO's suck in oval not because of the batteries because everything is now brushless and the motors have KV's lower than 1000 because of the torque. I would rather have a 6.6V pack in oval than a 7.4V pack when it comes to replacing 4.8V NiMH

ORIGINAL: A123 Racing

Hello All,

Sorry I was not able to Pipe in earlier, but I don’t spend a great deal of time on the Forums over the weekends. The VPX packs from Black and Decker do indeed have our newest 18650 cell. It is the same M1 chemistry that is so popular in our 26650 Cell.

To answer a few questions that have popped up so far:

1. Beware that the Cathode (positive) is now on the button end of the cell, like a normal battery. The case is negative and Live, so watch out for shorts.
2. Charge rates over 5C will most certainly have an impact on Cycle life.
3. Normal use cycle life is up to 1000 cycles similar to the 26650.
4. A123Racing will be offering standard packs with these cells soon.
5. The charging of these cells will be addressed, Most likely a new rev of the Sonic Charger, with a 5A/10A switch and 4S capabilities.

I guess that does it for now, let me know if you have any other questions.

Power . Safety . Life

Brian

I have a Sonic Charger. I would like to modify it to charge the B&D VPX batteries. You mentioned the new rev of the Sonic Charger may have a 5A/10A switch. What would be involved to add such a switch to the current Sonic Charger?

Wait, so...LiFePO4 chemistry in a softer, LiPo-like format? Did I read that correctly? Interesting due to the higher capacity, apparently more standard size/shape (compared to the 2300 cells at least). But what about the durability and other good aspects of A123? Maybe the cells are not physically soft, but are prismatic as opposed to cylindrical.
