In this tread I post pics and info on my strv103 scratch buildig project. I have been working on it for about 6 months now but it will probably not be finished soon. I will try to a answer all of your questions on this, and I´l try to updade as often as I can.

Currently I am working on the upper half of the tank, building details out of styrene sheets. Both my lathe and mill broke down a couple of weeks ago so I have to wait untill they are fixed to build any of the suspension and mechanical parts.

The scale is 1:16 and almost everything will have to be built from scratch except the tracks, electronics and gearboxes.

The hardest part to make will probably be the suspension due to the raising/lowering of the main gun. But i hope my homemade suspension will work.

/Anders

The S tank, very cool, it will be tricky making a full operational suspension but it would look great.

Dear Affe,

The S-tank is one of my favorite tanks, are you using HL drive wheels, tracks and sprockets?
Which one? Pershing or M41 Bulldog?

Best regards,

Patrick C.

Curios about the S-tank in the above pics.
Is the fence on the front for detonating RPG rounds?
What are the long tubes mounted on both sides of the upper hull?
All those jerry cans on the sides. Wouldn't that make for a "flame broiled" tank if it got hit?

I think the 'jerry cans' are active armor ? It would be fun to have a nice variety of nato/warsaw pact 1/16 armor to do modern IR battles.

You may be correct, but everything I've read suggests that they are fuel containers. Shoudn't be too bad with high flashpoint fuels (I think S-tank uses combination of diesel and gas turbine, so fuel is probably kerosene/diesel type)).

The tubes on the side are for a floatation screen as the s tank is amphibious.

The tracks I am going to use on the s-tank are the leopard 2 tracks that tamiya tank has. The real Leopard 2 tracks and strv103 tracks are similar in construktion I think they where both made by the same german company "Diehl Remscheid" (I think i have read it somwhere). And I heard that the left over rubber pads from the strv103C was used on swedish strv121 and 122 tanks ( I am not 100% sure of these facts as i cant find the info again).

I am going to build the sprockets myself, but there is still some problems about that to be solved.

/Anders

I have done some more work on my tank. It is realy difficult with all the angels. As you can see on one of the pictures there is a hole in one of the front "boxes" it is where the lens off a small wireless CCD-camera is going to be.

Thank you Jeff!

It is a long timeconsuming project, but I think it will be quite nice when finished.

You're very welcome! Many people cannot appreciate what goes on during a scratch build, let alone just building a kit.

I applaud you!

Thank you all for your comments!

I had to work this weekend so I have not had so much time to build, But I might post a little update tomorrow.

Great pics Jake looks like the illustrations in the old tamiya instruction books.

I have almost finished the details around the crew hatch and I have started thinking about how I am going to mount the two gearboxes. The gearboxes are realy silent and seem to be high quality, but I will probaly have to change the motors because the motors that came with the gearboxes needed 15 volts and i plan to use a Tamiya DMD.

Anders,

The details look fantastic!

For some ideas about gearboxes, check this site out. Willy has tried a lot of different configurations in his various tanks.

I forgot to order some material last week and i really wanted to start buildig the main gun so i went to the hobby store and bougt the probably most expensive aluminum tube ever. But when it was installed my project started to look like a tank.

After a long paus in the project I have started buildig on my S-tank again. I have added some small details, like a net just left of the drivers hatch. The gun has been cut to the correct lenght. But the major step forward is that i have manufactured some of the metal parts for the lover hull. The motors and gearboxes has been fitted. I recently tested the gearboxes and motors in my Gepard tank and they worked fine the only bad thing about them is that they run on 15 volts so i cant use a tamiya DMD.

Thank you!

The progress i very slow at the moment, decided to use Tiger II gearboxes instead of those in the pictures. I have redesigned the lover hull to be able to use less metal parts witch is harder to make.

trevlig kväll!
