Folks, we are getting ready to decide on what 80" Fusion style to produce over the winter and I'd love to get some feedback and ideas from the pilots out there. We've built three versions of the 80" Fusion this past year and have tried both the "hybrid" style fuse and the "profile" style fuse. My preference for the 80" size is the profile style as it allows easy engine installation as well as exhaust systems, no cowling or canopy to mess with, and easy view of the fuel tank and lines. Here's a picture of the profile version doing a HAKE pass. What do you guys think?

Does a plane that large still have the carbon fiber rod or rods in the fuse? Also does the larger profiles you offer also have any carbon fiber reinforcement of the fuse?

I am currently flying an arf Fusion with a ys-110-s [your combo package]. the plane flys great. I would not hesitate to use it for basic IMAC competition. Even some of our seasoned competitors are favoribly impressed. If you do choose to do a profile arf, make sure that the mounting system is stronger than on the current models. I have had to re-glue the motor mounts twice due to the vibration and the sheer power of the YS. This last time, I made a 'sandwich' of 1/8 aluminum flat stock to hold the lower half together. And I bolted the top half with 3 4-40 machine screws.
I have 50cc gassers, but love to fly my Fusion. Make it stronger, keep it lite, and be sure it flys as well as the current model and I'll buy one!

A flattie that is much stronger in the nose would be my preference. I built the Hybrid Edge, and had difficulty getting "stuff" in the fuselage. And like SteveRoss said, my Fusion90 with Ys-110 litteraly fell apart in the area of the engine mount after about 200 flights.

Fly safe, Glover

Put me down for a foam core slab. Nice and simple to build, service and maintain.
I will put a Evolution 35 with the factory pipe on mine. This is a sweet setup, and it's beam mounted.

Perhaps you could also engineer/test an optional motor mount design for rear mounted engines on slab fuses.
Something like that guy did with the MOAP a couple of years ago.
I think this compromise would satisfy both worlds.

Looking forward to OMP announcing availability, regardless of which way this discussion goes.

Hey Mike,

I have to be difficult and vote for the hybrid style. Plasticman's prototype build is looking so good, I don't want to lose a 3D fuse even if it's more work to build in the first place. Given the laser cutting production that you use, would it be possible to offer a slab fuse as standard and a hybrid fuse as a special order option? I am OK with waiting a few extra weeks for an alternate like that and it lets people get the choice they want.

Mark

No answer to my question?

Sounds like most folks want the slab. The Hybrid version Plasticman is building in the adjacent thread should be really cool to watch unfold.

I would also vote for the Profile, but it has to have a better design in the nose than the 90 version. The fusion that Z man gave to one of my students, due to not wanting to hassle with the china coat any longer, lost the entire nose. This plane was still considered new. After about his third day of flying it, he started it and wham the entire nose tore right off. He was on the ground, so the rest of the plane was not harmed. Thank god no one was standing near by. He has it fixed now and it is more solid and has less vibration than when it was new.

Vote for slab with a better designed nose, and the use of ultracoat.

I would also like to see a movable wing like on the fatty Giles that you sell. As long as you are going for the Imac/freestyle crowd, I think this would be a help. The few 90 fusions that I have seen were tail heavy with the lighter saito 100. My 80 inch Edge 540 was a little tail heavy with the saito 180. It would be nice to be able to move the wing if you had a lighter engine and wanted to do pattern work without adding any nose weight.
