Yes, I think that's right because it has a 39 or 40 volt limit when not in power supply mode.

I also have a 989 charger but was staying away from A123 cells because I thought I couldn't charge then. It almost sounds like the lipo charge mode on the 989 is just a front for the power supply mode. I use a Hyperion LBA10 Balancer-A123 Version that is capable of balancing both 3.7v and A123 lipos. The charger charges through the balancer and the balancer makes sure the cells don't overcharge and are balanced. I wonder if this would work OK with the A123's?

Thanks, It is in ps mode I assume. The worst part of course is the cv stage that takes a long time and encourages one to increase the terminating voltage in the interest of time. I think it is ok to use 4.2 for A-123 as long as the resting voltage winds up close.

I am new to R/C and to this forum so if this question sounds basic, it is because my knowledge is basic.......I bought a Futaba 3pk Super radio and it came with a 1700 mah lipo battery......I have a Intellipeak ICE charger and want to know how to charge the lipo battery After watching the video of lipo on myspace, it looks like a very scarey proposition.....Can you help????

I built a 5s1p A123 pack for my Electristar from a Dewalt 36v tool battery. After reading the posts by guver I thought before buying another charger for A123's (own two 989's) I would try charging with the 989 in power supply mode along with my Hyperion LBA10 balancer. On the first try I set it to 18v and 5.8a (max amps it would allow). The battery charged for about 20min at 5.8amps and then tapered off to 0amps in about an hour. The battery came off the charger at 18v but after 30min dropped down 17.6v. All the cells were perfectly balanced. I discharged the pack and recharged at 18.5v and 5.8amps. After an hour the pack came off the charger at 18.5v and settled down to 18.2v after 30 min. After 12 hours it's still holding at 18.2V. During charging I hooked up my Eagle Tree logger to monitor the amperage and voltage. It appears the Super Brain can charge A-123 cells. Do so at your own risk

I got tired of the external wiring job. lol. After I got done I realised I should've lined up the + and - with the labels on the buttons too.

I measured a bunch of banana plugs and thought there was a stanard center to center distance (maybe 5/8" doh.

The Super Brain 989 has been doing a first class job of charging the A123's in power supply mode. I have over 100 charges on several 5s A123's. The batteries haven't lost any capacity or performance so the 989 must be doing the job. Using the Hyperion LBA10-A to balance while charging. I also use power supply mode to charge my Flight Power batteries at a higher rate than the chargers 1.2c rate will allow in lipo mode. Many of the newer
