Hmm... I should read this forum more often.
I had no clue there were any VW people on here.
Im just getting into cars (I'm 15) and am in the process of fixing up my 86 Vanagon GL Syncro and acquiring a Beetle Baja Project Car.

BTW sorry for the crappy pics.
Thanks, James AKA BadBeetle (on TheSamba.com)

OUCH MAN, that is shagged

typically you would want to use drop spindles in conjunction with an adjustable beam to keep the steering and suspension geometry correct. i know of a few guys using stock spindles on narrowed adjustable beams but the cars arnt daily drivers. all they did was flip the tie rods to help correct the steering geometry. it depends on how low you want to go. if your looking to submerge it then definitely use drop spindles. if your looking for a modest daily driver drop (about a 2" drop on 145 front tires) you might be alright if you just flipped the tie rods over on the stock spindles.

OK, that is nearly exactly what i am wanting to do, i was wanting to do a narrowed adjustable beam and drop spindles but it would cost about 600 bux to do that, cause the drop spindles are $150, beam $250, narrowed torsion leaf $90, narrowe tie rods $90 total = almos $600 That setup i wouldnt need 145 front tires but i would need a loan, i dont have a job yet and i can barely pull in 10 bux a week...so i am really liking just the narrowed adjustable beam. If i went with just drop spindles, how narrow of a tire would i need to run? thanx

Aaron

Well... the Beetle was given to me (Just need to find a place to put it.) and the Vanagon was DIRT CHEAP yet in MINT condition but didnt run so I talked to my mom and dad and agreed it would be my X-Mas present.

I just need to figure out the ignition system (No spark) on the Vanagon to get it going. It has 207k miles and was a 1 owner! Minimal rust and rarely driven in the snow. (Michigan sucks when it comes to rust.) The interior is 98% perfect and it has just about all the options.

Thanks, James

just a beam should work (plus you can always add drop spindles later if you want/need to) but typically any time you lower a vw you need a smaller front tire. most ghia's iv seen on a beam and spindles are rolling ether 145's or 135's on the front on a 4.5 rim. or 145's on a 5.5 rim. i think you can also run 195/60's on a 5.5 rim. the 195/60's are the same diameter as the 145's, the 195's are just wider. the thing to do is lower it to where you want it, figure out what rims your going to use and then buy the tire that fits.
and fyi you can narrow the torsion leaf's and the stock tie rods yourself. might want to give that a shot, might save yourself 200 bucks. if you want instruction let me know

ahhh your close enough, its called a spring plate and it attaches to the torsion bar in the rear end. your talking about turning it a notch or two to lower the rear of the car. its common practice cause its the only way to lower the rear

is that primer or paint? you going to do the hole car that color? and an fyi from a body guy, don't primer anything unless you have to. primer soaks up moisture like a sponge. and you know what moisture does to steel right? interior panels are no exception. i spent 2 years chasing that problem before i was able to paint my bug

That black crap was probably underbody spray. Here in Canada we spray the bottom of our vehicles, the insides of the doors and trunk, and the inside of body panels with it to prevent rust due to winter driving. You probably don't see that too much in California.

It is paint, i am not going to primer anything because of the exact reason you gave....if i do want a primer look i will get a flat color, most likely a red or a black for the outside of the car, but that wont be very soon.

that's the same extractor header and single quiet pack muffler me and damn near everyone else have. there cheep and work good on small motors. but they fit like crap! i had exhaust leaks caused by the heat risers on the header not lining up with the pre heat tubes on the intake manifold (wound up with a backfiring problem) solved it with some block off plates. and i lost my heater cause the header blocked the rout (and in inlet) to the heater boxes. so i had to just plug the outlet ports on the fan shroud and go with no heat.
and a little advise, before you install it, sand it down and put a few coats of BBQ paint on it. those lame ass's at EMPI used regular paint on the thing and the first time you drive the car it all burns off and within a few days the header and muffler rust.

EMPI = Every Mistake Passes Inspection

ya know, it just dawned on me that that fat boy muffler is going to drag like a **** if you go THAT low in the back. also might make it a pain in the ass to change the rear tires.

under NO circumstances is it ok or understandable for a straight male to drive a new beetle, no mater what model or engine it is equipped with. period! the new beetles are for spoiled high school cheerleaders, college hippie chicks, and aging milf's in midlife crisis. any guy caught driving one, instantly has his sexuality called into question.
and there's NOTHING that can be done to new beetles to fix that or turn them into a guys car.

UNDER ONE CIRCUMSTANCE IT IS OK...
Check it... not photoshopped this is a real NEW BEETLE and the stock engine is still in it and runs and drives the car (100% Street Legal)
