Status: offline 		As long as it has Ver. 2.1A or later firmware in it. Ver, displayed when charger first connected.

Actually you can use any LiIon ,LiPoly chrger to charge A123 packs.
A123 racing recomends they be charged to 3.6V only however they can be safely charged up to 4.2 volts per cell as long as they are not held at that high of a voltage for a long time.
I have charged a 4S A123 2300 pack to 18V , 4.5 V per cell and it has thirty plus flights since and it is still performing as new .
I Zip charge a 3S pack to approx. 11.8-12.4 on a regular basis and it has nearly two hundred flights on itand doing fine.

As Charles has said the newer revision of the 1010 will charge A123 Cells to the proper voltage. Our cells can be charged safely to 4.2V / cell but there is certainly loss in cycle life if they are Repeatedly brought to this elevated voltage. There is also risk of failure if you charge an pack that is out of balance in this way.

We certainly appreciate Charles’ experience and information that he shares with our users on this forum, but A123 cells should not ever be charged beyond 4.2V especially in the pack form, even if they can tolerate it. Charging this way is a guaranteed way to greatly reduce your cycle life or cause the cell to vent.

Status: offline 		The charge to 4.5 volts per cell was an accident. I charged a 4S pack at 5S settings.

5X3.6=18V 18/4=4.5

Manufactures have to error on the side of safety and I fully appreciate Brian's position however.....

A fellow RC Groups member did some very harsh testing of a single A123 2300 mAh cell.

After 600 cycles of normal and not so normal charges / discharges he next cycled it 400 times charging it to 4.3V and discharging it to 0(zero) volts.


A snip from one of his post:

No one is recommending such abuse and no one should expect the cells to stand such abuse but they have.

Many are charging the 2300 packs at 20A routinely. I routinely charge a 3S 2300 pack in 6 minutes. Start charge rate approx. 30A tapering to approx. 5A.
