Flyboy Dave -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 4:31:41 AM)

.....time.

Patience.....

HighPlains -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 5:35:25 AM)

baking soda works with thin.

Flyboy Dave -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 5:40:36 AM)

....thin Ca kicks as soon as it leaves it's container....

....no matter what the unfortunate medium it lands upon. [:@]

Dr1Driver -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 11:46:01 AM)

Anywhere you don't want the CA to be will kick it off.

Just stick your finger in it.......kicks instantly.[:)]

Bottom line, I do not think that there is a home made kicker. Baking soda will make CA go off, however you are then left with a pile of rock hard baking soda to sand off. Thin CA usually does not need any kicker. Kicker is for the thicker CA glues's. Good Luck, Dave

Water with a little ammonia in a spray bottle.

scratchonly -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 6:28:34 PM)

I read somewhere that it is nitromethane. I have never tried it.

vicman -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/13/2007 9:19:28 PM)

Any encapsulating liquid will kick it off, I have even used windex while at a race just to get back in the action. It's pretty messy though. Just go buy some.

Fredsterman -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/14/2007 6:15:23 AM)

Nitromethane is an ingredient debonder[:)]

Commercial CA kickers contain one or more organic compounds known as amines because the CA curing reaction is catalyzed by basic reagents. They usually also are based on a mixture of various solvents.

These substances are not so easy for your average modeler to obtain, since commercial chemical suppliers won't sell to the public.

The best suggestion (apart from time, patience etc.) is very dilute household ammonia in a spray bottle. Organic amines are close relatives to ammonia - and the key here is not what particular base you use but just to make the environment basic.

I have found that in a pinch (i.e. when my bottle of kicker was across the shop and the thick CA I was trying to use to fillet something is starting to flow out of the joint that I am holding with both hands - don't ask[:-]) just spitting on the joint will work - your saliva has a pH on the alkaline side of neutral.

Deadeye -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (11/19/2007 2:45:14 PM)

2 parts hydrogen, one part oxygen.

kamakazi -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/11/2008 2:59:37 AM)

Alka Seltzer

carlosponti -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/11/2008 7:26:24 PM)

hot breath moisture in your mouth spraying over it will work too.

rcnut1 -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/25/2008 2:15:11 AM)

Just don't let your lips get to close. You will look real funny running around with a plane hanging off the end of your mouth

kamakazi -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/25/2008 2:17:25 AM)

All i know is Alka Selter dissolved in just enought water to melt it will work.

Dai Phan -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/25/2008 3:11:09 PM)

Hi all,

I think urine will work well too since it has ammonia. You can use it for emergency repair at the field but you need to aim well. DP

foodstick -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (4/26/2008 9:29:33 PM)

Hey Dai,

Remind me to not let you help with field repairs ! at least not when I am holding the plane !!!! ha ha

carolinaflyer08 -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (5/3/2008 5:45:21 PM)

ok kicker is like six dollars a bottle uhhhhh just go buy some!!

2boys -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (5/4/2008 9:29:44 AM)

As it was explained to me by my LHS- kicker is only suppose to heat up the CA to cure it instantly. Notably there is smoke and heat associated with kickers. I hate using it cuz it smells so bad and when I can I heat it up with a hair drier. I wasn't born into the world of convenience so waiting 10 minutes doesn't bother me, beats waiting 24 hours like we used to.

David Bathe -> RE: Home Made CA Kicker (5/8/2008 6:35:19 PM)

SPIT!

I think the heat and smoke are associated with the glue curing whether kicker is used or not. Pour some thin out and watch it get hot and smoke as it kicks.
