After having my Savage X SS for almost a year now I've really gotten sick of dealing with the nitro end of this truck. I think the Savage is a great platform so I've decided to do a brushless conversion, not without heavy nudging from some friends.

The plan is to make this the X a blast to drive. I'm not looking for all out insanity, but some good old fun brushless style.

So far I have received the business end of this project, a Feigao 8XL and a 14T mod 1 pinion. I will also be fitting it with a UBEC and a Mamba Max ESC.

I will fabricate my own motor mount as well.

Everyone is welcome to chime in to help or make suggestions during the build.

The first thing I need to decide is whether I'm going to mount the motor in the engine bay and put a fan on it or mount it on top of the transmission with the gear side facing to the rear.

I'll be posting pics as I progress through the build and if anyone already has some pics of their projects I'd like to see how you did it.

looking forward to it, but there just one thing tho....

here we go lunchbox and tex making another 50+ page build thread in the mt area lol.

why go with a 8xl, if your building a brush less savage, then go with the bigmaxium system, that's the king in the mt bl setups lol, just like the rb engines kings in power and price.

I bought some aluminum stock from the local home center and started in on this brushless project.

After a quick run through of everything on the truck and installing a few new parts I removed the K4.6.

I then cut and drilled a simple motor mount to bolt onto the front engine mount holes on the truck.

The motor itself is not adjustable, but the mount is so I did not worry about that. The engine mount holes are slots so this allows me to slide the entire assembly to adjust the gear mesh. I wanted this to me as simple as possible so that everyone can do this in a few hours with the right tools.

You can see that the motor shaft is larger than normal, it's 5mm. This requires a special 5mm pinion and the pitch is mod 1.

I used two of the original hardened mounting bolts to attach the motor assembly with some loctite and metric nuts I had.

You can see it looks right at home, matching purple anodizing and all. I got two purple Integy heat sinks to match.

With the motor now mounted I use some more of the angle stock to make a shelf for the MM esc. It's bolted to the frame using two of the existing engine plate screws.

Here it is hooked up and ready for testing. I did test it with a 7.2V pack and it works well. I still have to set up the esc correctly and I'm waiting for my ubec to be delivered.

Now if I can just find my spray cleaner to clear out the tranny.

What can I say, we love to build!

8XL was the right price and plenty power for the application. I'm only running 14 cells and no plans for lipo on this.
