A friend in our local club, John, had been flying high power electrics for a while but I finally mamanged to win him over to getting an oiler.
The recharge time was getting to him.
We are both into warbirds and he decided on a VQ Macchi and powered with an RCV60SP. Personally I tried to talk him into a 90SP butt....
The plane flew very well, not balistic, but with some power in reserve.
On the 5th flight he had a collision with a trainer aircraft at about 200ft. This managed to rip off one stab, but unfortunately folded the control back and locked the plane in a dive.
It hit, and hit hard, burying the entire cowl. We actually had to dig the motor out.
Both pilots took the incident in the vein of our hobby, a good natured mishap.
John WAS a bit crestfallen at having lost the plane so soon.
Fortunately the motor was unharmed, and I tried to convince him the airframe was fixable.
I have had a bit of experience repairing a few (understatement) of my own bingles, and could see the potential in a repair.
So I thought others might be interested in the saga.
It took me 2 months to get John to bring the garbage bag of remains to the workshop, and that afternoon we made a good start.
Here are some pics of the crash scene.

The first afternoon was spent reassembling the main spar, leading edge and what we could find of the trailing edge.
Another afternoon I spent recreating some 8 ribs shattered beyond reconstruction.
One more afternoon of team effort and we had the leading edge skinned and wing tip shaped.
This was followed by a soaking in a light epoxy resin (surfboard type) which triples the effective strength of the balsa?? used in these ARF's.
Here is the wing ready for final sanding.
It will be covered in Koverall, doped and painted.

The real challenge is going to be the fuse. Not only is it pretty shattered but John wants to rebuild it as a Macchi 200 instead of the 202.
The fuse for the 200 is a radial cowl with a cigar shaped fuse.
As we have to rebuild it anyway, why not. Good chance to have something different at the field.
The plane hit so hard the poor pilot even had his head shattered when he hit the front of the canopy.

That is one heck of a hole that plane drilled. Glad to see you guys are rebuilding it.

The wing finally has its first coat of primer. Some sanding to do, filling and finishing and we are ready to paint it.
I usually fit the ailerons before painting with a vaseline mask over the hinges.
Anyone got any better methods or pro's and con's I haven't thought of.

Now we get to turn our attention to the fuse.
The plan we have is an enlarged .25 glo version downloaded from teh web, which it appears is not exactly to scale, so combined with the different drawings we have, of varying scale accuracy, we have been able to rough out the formers and have worked out there placement.
She is not going to be a competition model, so as long at looks right we will be happy.
John is off shopping for some 2mm ply to begin reconstruction of the fuse side.
We then fit the formers and stringers.

When all is said and done, how much additional weight are you adding in the rebuild (if any)? Just curious about that. I saw you were painting it. I guess to get the realizm, scale look, you almost have to do that. What did you cover the wing with prior to painting?

Looking good!!

We will be taking a weight penalty, 250gm to 500gm is my guestimate but it could be as much as a kilo when done. But what we gain in strength and durability is worth it. The question will be 'will the 60SP fly it adequately'?
The wing is covered in Koverall, polyester woven heat shrinkable fabric. Good tough stuff.

I did a similar rebuild on my own Spitfire 60 from Sportsman Aviation, and it came out at 5Kg. Fortunately it has a ST 90 pulling it and has flown nearly every weekend for 3 years. It s one of the fastest and most stable aircraft at our field 'because' of the additional weight even though it has cartwheeled down the runway on numerous occasions.

It has taken a while but we have advanced the the fuse build.
Here the formers are in place and we have mated the new stringers to the old.
The formers hanging out the sides give us the shape of the final fuse, which is rounded on the 200 rather than the flat sided 205.
So far all has progressed smoothly.

Next step was to get the curved fuse shape following using the former shapes as templates.
So we simply glued on foam blocks and carved to shape.
This is just rough sanded so far.
John has the fun task of final finish sanding and filling followed by more sanding.
Lower fuse shape is to follow.

The strength of the horizontal stab was a concern to me so we have laid a glass and resin reinforcement top and bottom on the leading and trailing edges as well as strengthening fillets.

The fuse bottom contour was added and is now roughed to shape.
First small amounts of filler have been added.

The wing received its paint today. We are taking a bit of builders license with the colours as there is now some urgency to get this project finished (John may have to move away for work).
We have decided on a light blue for the underside and the top is the base colour for a desert camo.
It was more a case of these were the colours of automotive paints we had on hand that were close rather than trying to get exact matches.
She's not going to be stand off competitor but a Sunday sports hack.

Final job for the day was to reinforce the interior sections, especially as John is considering a 91 2 stroke up front.
Don't want that motor taking off without the plane
Work is to continue tomorrow on adding the lower front section and final shaping of the fuse ready for glassing.

The wing has been all but finished. Camo added and servos, ailerons and retracts installed.
John is chasing up decals today. The ones you see here are just the printouts from our templates.
Fuse front lower is fitted and shaped and the rest covered in finishing tissue and resin.
The horiz and vert stabs are covered in Koverall.
I had the the cowls off the Black Widow so we tried a dry assembly to get an idea of the final look.

Shots of the finished wing.

Thanks for the encouragement.

The under nose section is now shaped and glassed.

Today we finished up the wing fairings on the fuse and put on the first layer of primer/filler.

John gets the next job of wet and dry sanding, sanding and more sanding before we go to filler and another coat of primer.

We also did the weight calculations today.
Fuse - 1.15 kg
Wing - 1.33 kg
Engine - .67 (if we use the 61 but heavier if we use the 91)
Electronics - .333

This doesn't yet include the cowl.
And paint has yet to be applied to the fuse.

All up we guestimate a 4kg to 4.5 kg plane when finished.

John is not perturbed as he says the original was a real floater anyway at just over 3 kgs.

mboland - I think that a .70 4S should fly it fine. I have that in the front of my Macchi and its still fast, take-offs are short and I have plenty of power. Maybe an .804S on the high end?

I thought it was high time that I joined in on this thread. Mike and I can now see the end of this rebuild/modification in sight. Today we applied the wing decals and sealed them. We only had time to give the underside a coat of satin clear. I procured some A4 sized Avery heavy duty self adhesive labels that are supposedly oil and UV resistant. They printed very well on my inkjet printer and hopefully will not fade being UV resistant. This has always been a problem on previous models, so fingers crossed.

I am nearly finished rubbing down the fuselage after priming and filling and tomorrow we will add another coat of primer/filler. Filler was an automotive putty. Hopefully after rubbing this down we will be ready for camo. Sorry there are no pics but we will take some tomorrow.

I have decided not to add panel lines as it will not be entered in any stand off scale events because it was an ARF and will be used primarily as a sports hack. I wonder?, it started life as an ARF but has been rebuilt and modified to an earlier series of plane. Does this qualify as a scratch build for the sake of scale competition? Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

That's a good point.
If you turn an ARF into a kit, then rebuild, would it qualify for Scale Stand Off?

I hear what your saying, and do agree, but,
we wouldn't be able to break the sound barrier
