I’d like to apologize to Bob and all of the others whom have been following this thread for not updating.
There are two reasons, first I have spent a few evenings helping a friend who had some wiring issues on his bike. Years of haphazard repairs, and modifications had finally rendered it non functional, after a few evenings work it is back on the air. The second reason I have spent some time in a discussion on the aerodynamics forum regarding considerations for a future project.

Hopefully tonight I will try to get back into this build and make some real progress in the next few days.

Nice job on the SE, eagle. Your airplane will set a new standard for future SE's!

I finally got out and maidened mine tonight. Two flights, one for trim and checkout, next for a mild shakedown. With the mods I added on mine, it's really a little performer. I won't go into it all, since this isn't my thread, but for the sake a comparison for weights, I:

-Sheeted turtle deck
-oversized by 3/8 all control surfaces, added counters on E and R
-OS 55AX with APC 12.25x4 Sport (spinning 13,700 ) Dubro 2" plastic spinner
-Different pants (from expired Cap 580)
-TNT SE aluminum gear. This was needed to spin that prop. Really looks great and gives the plane a whole new stance with...
-Sullivan tailwheel
-Kevlar flying wires on tail

Had to add 1.5 oz to the nose to get it balance, and all up RTF weight was 5 lb 14 oz. Picture in my gallery. I've already hijacked eagles thread too long!

Keep up the good work IE! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

reincarnate,
I love how you finish came out! Don't worry about the Hijack I haven't been posted for a bit anyhow. I cant wait to see how the weight of mine comes out with the fuselage being fully sheathed, I have taken some care to trim as much weight as I could but, still will not have an idea of the finished weight till I have the servos tank and radio in. The tail feathers came out close to the stock weight (3/4 of an inch to the elevators, 1.25 inch to the rudder) not much of a savings their unless you take into consideration the enlarged control surfaces. Tanks for posting the rtf weight of your build, it will give me an idea of what I can expect.

I am now on my third version of the cowl, the first two I did not come out looking even close to what I wanted, so I trashed them. While this plane is not built for speed I still wanted something that was fairly clean and would improve the airflow over the fuselage. By adding some control surface area to the tail and the added side area of the cooling duct should give it a bit better knife edge performance, at least that is the plan. All of the control surfaces with the exception of the flaps are being set up as pull pull hopefully that will help keep the weight down a bit I still have yet to fish the cables through the wing but that should not be a big deal. I have to go out this afternoon but hopefully tonight and tomorrow (my weekend) I will have a shot at getting the cowl done. Our flying field is still a bit of a swamp, so no real rush to get out and fly during mud season for me.

Here are a few views of the progress of the cowl (version 3)thus far...

Not all that much to show, but I have not felt all that well of late.

Nice wood work on that cowl, Paul. Do you do this for a living? Wish I had that 'touch'.

Bob

Bob,
Thanks but it is fairly crude at this point just some of the supports for the frame and where it will be split.
I used to do custom furniture and cabinets as a hobby, my Dad was a builder, so I got to work in all the trades growing up.
Working with balsa is easy you make a rough shape and sand away all of the offending material. Just try to use the direction of your grain to give it strength and even put some cross grain to form very light plywood.
You start your rough shaping with a plain or knife (if a lot of wood needs to be removed), then you progress from: 40 grit to higher grit sandpaper as you get closer to the final shape.
You will be surprised how fast your final shape starts to appear...

I'll post some more pictures to show how the cowl frame is "planked" and the rest of the baffles installed. I had thought of "form bending" the sheathing, but given the complex shape that will be needed I going to "rough it in" using geometric shapes that fit together like a f-117 looks, the sand it till it looks like it is finished shape more like the B-2.

I have always thought about building a 177 model and sanding it out so it looks more like an airplane should.

Progress has been slowed to a crawl over the past few weeks due to some health issues. I finally have gotten the major part of the cowl built up. I still need to install the head baffles which will be done after the new parting lines are cut into the cowl. Originally I had planed to have them much higher but decided to move them down due to issues with the muffler mounting. The cowl itself still needs some more shaping and sanding done but it has progressed to the point that I can get started on the cooling duct and fairings that will blend the cowl into the fuselage.

That's some nice work! It's almost a shame to cover your grain with paint. Building has been slow for me last month or two (Piper Arrow II), due to health issues as well. We are all going to have to wait to die before we can build 24-7 without interruptions like that.

Hi Paul,

I like the shape. That is going to look sharp. Are you going to glass it before painting?

Sorry about the health issues... I didn't know. Let me know if you need anything. We'll see you at the Field tomorrow... you can be a Foreman, OK?

Bob

I just finished setting up a new computer, I hope to start on the cooling duct later tonight or tomorrow.

Finally got the cooling duct finished! Well at least I have finished gluing it together, it still needs yet to be sanded and filled. The back of the cowl needs to be sanded flat where it joins the cooling duct but those pieces need to dry overnight. I also need to make the notch where it will enclose the landing gear. After all that is done I can finish the nozzle portion and one internal baffle. Then I will be need to complete the fairings for the cowl and wing root. After all of that I will be able to start on the fuselage finish.

I have installed the baffles and nozzle in the cooling duct, roughly an hour or so on sanding and doping the interior and it is finished. The next part of the project is to finish the landing gear mount with a bit of .5 Oz fiberglass to reinforce the fuselage. After that I can bolt the gear on and install the cooling duct and do the final shaping on the exterior portion of it after I have installed the cowling fairings.
