I have been searching all the posts and found a lot of information on mixes,manufacturers,types,amounts,results.
However I am not a chemist , I am a user that wants to cut the cost of fuel , I burn about a gallon or two a week and that costs me about €60 which is about US$60 per week (€30 per gallon) on buying ready-made fuel. Surely with common sense this can be reduced.
So what I would like is for you good folks to post replys that are definitive .
So Please Please respond with posts that specify exactly what products to use and where to get them per location and how much it costs per gallon.
Everyone state their location/supplier/cost per gallon to homebrew/nitro-oil content/etc.


That is not hard so anyone that has mixed successfully let us have it, and end the endless debating about practicality of homebrewing around the world.

The only way to save money by mixing your own fuel is to find a supplier within driving distance.
The hazardous materials shipping fee for the nitro and methanol
will make it a very expensive fuel, indeed.

I am going to be very near this place in a few weeks, so will probably be making a purchase.

Seeing you're in Ireland you should be able to get Castrol M castor oil. Here in Australia my last 5 litre can cost me about $80 (if I remember right) which should be about 50Euros. This is enough for 25 litres or 5.5 UK gallons @20% oil. Methanol is either Shell A racing fuel or BP racing and is about Aus$1/litre or roughly 3Euros/gallon. On these figures it works out about 11Euros/gallon.

If you want to use nitro then that's up to you. I've never found any need for it. Same with synthetic oils, I've never used them so have no idea of their prices. You may find Shell A is slightly more expensive than BP methanol because (at least here in Oz) it's only sold in their own 20 litre drums but it has 3% acetone already added which helps the idle and transition when nitro isn't used.

I get my methanol and Castrol M from the local Shell/BP/Ampol agent.

Well I can get Methanol pretty cheap locally , unfortunately I use 4s YS and will prob need synthetic oil , currently I am paying €27.50 for my fuel , way 2 expensive

Well I guess Homebrewing is not a realistic option based on that response , guess we will all have to keep making the big guys even more wealthier!!!!

Check around and find your local karting shop.
Im not talking about the ones that run around the yard.
Im talking about racing karts. These guys generally will have both castor and synthetic based oils made to blend with methanol as well as sources for nitro and propylene. Some may not fess up to having sources for the later 2 items but heh most do.

Im not going to go into a chemistry lesson but.
I did take notice I didnt see any mentions of propylene.
When you add nitro to methanol you are wasting your time if you dont add a percentage of propylene. The only thing Im not sure of is if im spelling Propylene properly.

And yes acetone will sort of work like propylene Sort of being key word its not near as good as prop.

be warned unless you are going to mix up 10 gallons or more at a time you are really going to be wasting your time as you wont see much cost savings if any at all untill you get past the 10 gallon mark.

You are right, you are not saving too much money making you own glow fuel unless you make a big amount. The second part is the price of nitro and the expenses in you incur whe you buy it in small amounts. Also believe or not the methanol quality is very important, I means the purity and % of water inside(humidity)and methanol sucks water like sponge.You cant store it too long improperly.I try time ago and the time and effort you spent doesnt pay a buck The only way you save something is if you use FAI type fuel with no nitro but Methanol should be OK on quality. About the carts guys , this is the real close option. I know 4c like synt oils, but try a mix with blend oil like the Klotz 80%synt 20Castor(degumed) I use this oil on my SAITO 150 with no problem. The other option you can consider is to make a gas conversion on your engine. If you spend the money you say every week, your investment will payback as fast as you think. I have the conversion also for my saito and use just premium fuel and blend oil. You have a better idle and the fuel consumption is by 35% less and plus the fuel is much cheaper. I dont know about this in your country but you can contac Jerry Nelson at Nelson Hobbies at http://www.nelsonhobby.com/default2.htm he has lot of combination and will help you. Of course all depend of size of your engine and space available on your airplane. The change could seems crazy but is easy and works.
