Brushless tail, DirectDrive or not, any Success stories?

Some have demonstrated the Blade CPPro to work in this setup.

Technically, I'm "brushless-tail" now.
If you qualify a belt-drive? Haven't had any issues what so ever with the system so far, other than the screws in the tail section of the frame loosening up (2 holes stripped), which caused the tail-boom to twist mid-flight, when I throttled up (a drop of CA fixed that)!
Still had some-tail control, it twisted 30 degrees down, added to the foward flight thrust, gyro didn't like it.
Have you thought of going to the Belt-drive system at all?

Rick

Thanks,

Just weighing my options here. I've seen other heli's with brushless tail motors and wanted to know who has done it with the Axe and what equipment they used. I'm thinking some ESC's and motors have features that work better than others like soft start or soft brake. Gyro set up could be key here too. The successful Blade CP Pro user used digital servo output on his gyro setting. I've been following this thread since inception and there are about 3 guys who have tried it, but most have failed. Helico (name ?) tried it on here, but he doesn't post anymore and I don't recall if it was successful.

Belt tail: I would rather not cut the frame. One hard mishap could crack the frame, then you're really out of luck. Although, it is an option I might pursue once I quit crashing and cay fly inverted.

You're really not removing too much material out of the frame, just allowing "clearance" for the drive gear & idlers. There's still plenty of strength left in that rear frame section. And if your worried about "crash-testing," don't ! I've crashed several times fairly hard, with the BD system on. Broke blade-grips & blades, landing gear struts, bend flybar into a pretzel, no frame damage or twists.
The tail ends up lighter with the BD, in comparasion to tail motor set-up, and with the independant tail blades, blade breakage has not happened during hard landings, cause the blades fold with contact to the ground. Unlike the HM stock tail blades that break with a "leaf-strike."
Just my 2 cents

Rick

Hey Pilotlight I'm still around, I just haven't been frequenting the site as much.

Anyway I do have have a DD BL tail set-up and it works great. It took me a while to get it dialed in though.

I'm using a GY240, Phoenix 10, and AMMO 4110 12 x 30mm motor. It's been a while though so I dont know my ESC settings off hand. If you go this route and require them PM me and I'll send them to you.

Also there are other options for components. I believe the Logi-tech 2100 gyro works really well if you have the extra channel for remote gain. It has alot of adjustment capability.

I also know that the Medusa Reasearch 12 x 30mm BL motor has more power than the AMMO BL if you really wanted to go for maximum power at the tail. I found out about it after I bought my motor and I am curious at how it would work.

One thing though, the Phoenix 10 and PC link are mandatory for this set-up. It's the heart of the system. I tried a cheaper ESC at first and though it worked it didn't work well. Again you need the adjustability that the Phoenix has.

Good Luck!

BTW here's some pics of my BL tail.

Hey great! I knew you went BL on the tail, but wasn't sure it finally worked. Just finished pricing this stuff out and its a little steep for now. Also, not sure about getting pinions to fit, or finding drill bits and a drill press to enlarge the pinions available. I'm still in the research phase here, so any additional input would be great.

I hear ya.

Not to worry the OE pinion fits fine. Both motors have the same dia. shaft. 1.5mm I think.

Well all I can say is the set-up I have works great. So in that way for me at least it's proven.

Having said that if I had to do it over I'd substitute the Logic-Tech 2100 because it's smaller, lighter, and has more adjustability than the 240. At the time though my choices were limited because I was still using the OE Tx. Now with my 7C I have room for a dedicated remote gain channel. I'd also want to go with the Medusa motor for more power.

Right now the prop I'm running is the GWS3020 on the GWS Dragonfly tailshaft adapter. The 3020 is the only prop I can run with the Ammo motor. I tried the 3030 but it's higher pitch puts an increased load on the motor pushing up the amps and really heating it up. I like the 3030 prop better because of its quieter scimitar profile. Apparently I'm shooting for "Whisper Mode" . Anyway the Medusa motor should be able to use the 3030 and it's increased wattage would provide even more thrust. Again though going this route means whoever does it would be the pioneer. I have no doubt it would work, but at the same time I couldn't guarantee it would work.

Also just to clarify the set-up I have works great, but for me there's always room for more power.

Here's some pics of my old Geared BL tail set-up...

Wow this looks like it can really do the trick for me. Can you send me some specs on the new setup of the gyro and what i need to get one like this. I have put a new motor on the back but this looks like a stronger one. How is it for keeping a good tail?
