Work has slowed a bit for the holidays but is still moving along. Photo 1: I've been adding the rigging to the tail structure of the fuselage as well as lightening the tail and skid assembly and landing gear mounts. Photo 2: Things get busy in a hurry with all that bead wire. I also added 40 fake turnbuckles for character. There are only 4 independent lengths of wire that will be tightened simultaneously to ensure a straight tail. Then each contact point will be fixed permanently with epoxy. Photo 3: The longerons are spruce but the braces are light balsa so I drilled a notch in each end. I then epoxied a small segment of 1/16" tubing into the notch. When the braces are epoxied in its like the tubes are epoxied directly to the longerons so the balsa doesn't take any bearing stress from the wire.

I was able to take 3 millimeters out of the total width of the tail by sanding the tail posts down aggressively. I then adjusted the widths of everything else. Photo 1: I removed some material from the 5ply tail skid that was going along for the ride. Photo 2: I also hollowed out the plywood to 3ply in the area where the skid meets the balsa sides.

Based on weights of parts before and after, I estimate I've removed about 2 ounces from the tail already. Before you start to laugh remember the distance from the cg to the tail is nearly 5 times the distance from the firewall. Assuming the plane is tail heavy when completed, it would require 10 ounces of weight at the firewall to balance that 2 ounces in the tail. Thats 12 ounces total weight saving, or 3/4 of a pound on a plane that weighs 7.5 pounds!

Photo 3: Here is the relationship between the CG, nose and tail.

The bands I made out of tape, the auto detail kind, seemed to be the right color and easy to use. I crammed everything I could get in front of the full cockpit, and it balanced without weight (if memory serves, I will pull it down tonight and check) the OBG and battery adds some forward weight, as does the twin engine. The aileron bellcrank set-up also adds weight. I think the rudder and elevator servos are right behind the seat but everything else is up front. If I did add weight it wasn't much. I've seen weight boxes built on the firewall in these planes.

well Mike, the torture is soon over for me as Joe sent me an email last night with a tracking number for my N 11. should be here middle of next week.
Joe did send my Laser 80 earlier this week though, and 16 detailed pictures of how it mounts to the N 11.
the Laser was well worth the wait too, it is the most gorgeous piece of work i have ever held.
as soon as i get this bird going i'll start dropping pics in here as well.

Great news Mike! The wait is almost over. I hope you have as much fun building yours as I am. This project has been the most fun of any kit I've ever assembled. It's like making a nice piece of furniture. I know you've considered doing another Nieuport 28 first but I hope I can encourage you to start the N11 instead. Except for those cap-strips, it frames up really fast and there is always something finished at the end of a building session to help keep you motivated.

If you have some digital pics of a Laser 80 installation how about sharing them here.
Mike.

Nice prototype pictures Mike. I'm not sure why pic's occasionally post in large format on this site. It's happened to me too. However, I welcome the increased detail in this case. I'm working on the landing gear and interplane struts right now and these pictures have changed my direction on several details - Just in time, Thanks!

i figured it out, i downloaded these, but never changed the pixel dimensions.
i have a ton more, so i'll copy the original folder and then downsize.................it's annoying when you have to scroll side to side.

Time for an update on the build. There are only two more major areas left to construct on the model; the top hatch and turtle deck. Photo 1: I began fitting the many pieces that make up the top hatch this morning. It's important to get this right because the cabanes and upper wing are aligned by this assembly. The design is quite clever but requires some trimming and jiggling to get everything to fit nicely. The brass brackets sticking out of the sides are what holds the lower wings on. Photo's 2,3&4: Since I have the cabanes on I couldn't resist dry assembling the entire plane and making propeller noises. This is always a high point in the build for me. (Please ignore the terrible clutter of my hobby room.)

It's really coming together now and I'm starting to see the bottom of the kit box. I also need to locate and install the landing gear but that is pretty much a bolt-on affair. I'll be making a trek to the Williams factory for wheels and stuff this week.

Mike.
