Checksix,

That's a LOT of slicing and scanning! You must have been beat after that one. Great results though!

Myles,

The plane you're seeing there is a model of the X-36, a little-known aircraft dubbed "The Tailess Agility Aircraft". (NASA)

It uses YAW thrust vectoring, in lieu of vertical fins. (automatically kept in line by the onboard computer.) It would make a challenging project, but would require a "vane in the wind"-controlled system to sense yaw rate.

I happen to know of a modeler who is "secretly" working on one of these. Maybe he'll see this and tell us about his progress.

Yes, I am familiar with the X-36 and it is a very cool plane! I have seen video footage of it flying as well.

Questions of the day: if I had a good three view of a drawing in .dwf format could someone convert it into .dxf? I tried to do it before and the results were ok but the drawing had more squared of lines instead of the curves in it.
I have a great .dwf of a YF-23 that was made by a fellow but I have never been able to get ahold of him. The YF-23 is my absolute favorite aircraft of all time and I have been wanting to somehow get this drawing converted plus show the cross sections of the fuse. Is it possible to make cross sections or a 3-D drawing from a 3-view?
You'll have to be patient with me because I am really not to familiar with CAD but looking at everyone's pictured here it would seem like you guys would be the one to ask
Thanks for any info!
Myles

Jetset,
What cad program did the .dwf come from? Did you mean to type .dwg?
Either way, if you want you could e-mail the file to me I will try to make a .dxf for you. You know dxf's are only a way of translating a drawing from one cad package to another?
"Is it possible to make cross sections or a 3-D drawing from a 3-view? "
It is totally possible to make cross sections from a 3-view drawing and you dont even need a cad package. Pencil, paper, a scale, patience and time is really all you need.
A 3D model and drawing can also be made but it takes time. Cheers.
James

The .dwf format is used so you can view AutoCAD drawings on the Internet using a viewer like Autodesk Whip plugin viewer.
Actually, here is the link for the drawing:

http://www.allenrockwell.com/aviation/atfpage.htm

Click on the "Drawings of my YF-23 ATF model"

You may have to wait a few minutes to let the plugin load.
It really is an awesome drawing! I've have been drooling over this for the past 3 years!
Any help on making my dream come true is greatly appreciated!
---Even my avatar is a YF-23!

Thanks guys!

If anyone would like the file just send me a message to this
e-mail addy:

3kids@reach.net

This is my home e-mail.
Or if you were able to open the drawing in the link I posted, you can right click the picture and choose "Save as..." from the pop-up menu. Choose >DWF. I think it is set to this by default and you will still need the Autodes Whip plugin to view it.
Unfortunately you cannot choose the Save as > AutoCAD DWG files from the pop-up menu.
Thanks for the help guys!
Myles

OK all you YF-23 nuts check this out

http://216.40.226.212/~admin2/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19155&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

It's a thread on eZone about my latest YF-23 model that I'm working on. This model is 1/15th scale is an electric ducted fan model (EDF) that will be powered by 2 Kontronic motors turning WeMoTec MiniFan 480s. The molds are done, the tails are built and the first flying model should leave the stable in less than a month.

There are a bunch of project photos for the 1/15th scale model on www.silentflightonline.com in the ImageBase area of the site. I even created a category called "YF-23 EDF Project" in the ImageBase so you can go straight to it.

BTW, I also built a 1/10th scale YF-23 many years ago for twin ducted fan (.65-.90 size) .. that model has not flown yet but I plan to make it happen this summer for sure.

Sorry, I rarely check the RC Universe forums ... if you have any questions/comments on the YF-23 you can catch me on the SilentFlightOnline forums (UserID Allen Rockwell) or the eZone forums (UserID GlasairAllen).

Allen, I have tried to get ahold of you in the past several times and it is a blessing to see that you really do exist! If you only knew how many times I have been at your website and looked at your drawing! Think I probably printed it about 100 times! I hope you don't mind that I put the link to your site with the .DWF!
I will catch you at SilentFLight Online cause I have 1,000,000 questions for you!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful plane with us!
Myles

you guys need a very large rapid prototyper to make plugs from. CheckSix's post made me think of that, since that's basically what he's doing, just by hand. Wouldn't that be great? All you gotta do is win the lottery!
