James: Looking great there bud. Your really going to town on this model. Yea for my hard points I used a dowel rod. Easy installation and they are great. You dont haft to worry about them coming loose or wearing out. About your engine choice. I think the GT-26 Might be a little to much for this plane. Why don.t you give Bob Mackie a call and see if he has a Zenoah G-20 IE in his Taylor craft. I think he does or I think he has one in one of his planes. I'm not sure. Anyway check and see if he will give you the measurements or or get together and look for yourself at his plane and maybe see if it will fit. I think it would be great if it did. Of course I don't know the weight difference between the two engines. RCV Engines has a great looking 90 CD and a 91 SP engine for a good price and the SP is round and the CD is a low Profile that I know will fit in your cowel with no problem. They also have a 120 SP size but it is a little pricie. Check out there site RVCeng.com. I heard them run on there site and they sound great.Deep and rummble and they sound like a gas engine. I know you want gas in this plane but check out the options anyway. Ok james i'll be waiting for your next entry on your fantastic build.

Just stopping in to check on progress?

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/19/2007 4:10:41 AM)

Folks, I got the other wing cut and the aileron and wing ready to sand down for robart hinge points. Also got the rudder sheeted and should have more pics in the next few days. I ran out of gorilla glue . I still have not decided on servos . The ailerons are not that big and I was thinking of metal gear standard type. All servos run at 6 volts. the rudder should be 100 oz and each elevator could be metal gear standard type. any suggestions or ideas? Gonna do a pull pull on rudder. all hardware is going to be 4-40 type.

Gray Beard -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/19/2007 5:18:31 PM)

Go on over to Servo City and take A look there. They have A section for sale items you should look at. When HT changed servo models I got A pile of there 6985s at half price or less.
Read the specs on them too, not all servos are 6v, these days they mostly are but there are still some 4.8 only servos still being sold and used.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/20/2007 3:27:01 AM)

Greybeard, I checked their site out and they had some good prices especially on the standered hitech servos. I still have not made my mind up on servos. heck the ailerons on my 4* are longer than the extra 300 but not as wide. Hummmmm.......
Well I got the other wing completed except for the root end and servo pocket. ready for robart hinge pionts. Also got the rudder fully sheeted and some of the 1/4 in balsa strips glued on. I tried a tad bit different method of gluing the sheeting on the rudder this time.
when I applied the glue, I didn't put too much on this time. I think I put too much on the wings but I still ended up with 2 nice wings lucky me. But I did take some advice that I learned from that web site a few post back and added a bunch more weight to really put the pressure on the cores. close to a 100 lbs. got a real nice fit on this go around. Will do the horizontal stab and elevators in the next few nites. I have the skins ready to go.

smullis -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/20/2007 8:56:32 AM)

Hello James : Just seen your thread and sounds like the plane is coming along great. I also checked the site that graybeard said and It didn't impress me that much. Go to Troy built models.com and look at there prices and they have alot of choices to look at. I think if you want a digital servo a HS-5945 Would be a great choice or the HS-5985 is a good one also. There is no price difference in the two. I think one has a stronger case and the 85 has more torque than speed. I am sure you can get them for about $45.00 Apiece if you order two or more at the same time. Check them out.
See ya soon,
Steve

DadsToysBG -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/20/2007 3:44:03 PM)

Also look at the JR sport 126. They are metal gear and put out 142oz at 6v for less then $40. Dennis

FLYINMIKE-RCU -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/21/2007 4:46:27 AM)

Irglnman......Lookin Good With The Extra. I Haven't Heard From You . Looks Like You've Got It Figured Out And Moving Along On The Plane. Keep Up The Good Work. I Read In An Earlier Post Where You Are Thinking About Th 50% Pitts Next. Let Me Know If I Can Help Any.

Mike

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/21/2007 12:24:55 PM)

Just rolling the pitts around in my head. Gonna have to come up with some big bucks for that one[:D]. Yea I got just about all the bugs figured out on this build. I am sure there will be a few more .[;)] Dadstoys I have been thinking about Jr's servos I all ready have a digital mighty mini that will work great for 1/2 of the elevator . I am goint to put 2 servos on each elevator half. I think I will go digital all around on this plane just to see what all the fuss is . I guess the biggest thing is paint. what to do on that is now on my mind heavy. I have a scheame planned but I can't get the base colors in my head . Also should I go with monocoat or ultracoat. I have experience on ultracoat but not monocoat.
Which is going to give me the most rugged and best looking finnish. Also which one is going to accept paint bettter. There is going to be some airbrushing on it. Can't tell you my ideas until its done!!![:D]

mmattockx -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/21/2007 4:42:27 PM)

Since you are going with gas power on this one, cover the wings with Koverall (or 0.75oz fiberglass if you like) and use Minnwax Polycryllic to seal it, then latex for the colors on the fuse and wings. It's light, tough and completely fuel proof with gasoline. I would never go with film on a plane this size, the Koverall and paint looks much better and is far tougher. If you have to use film, I would avoid Monokote at this time.

HalfScale -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/24/2007 10:15:01 AM)

Irglnman,,, Halfscale here,, I guess it is time to put my two cents in,, I have been sloping this fiberglass and makeing these kits for almost fifteen years now,, And it gives me great pleasure to see someone take one of my kits and do such a great job !! ( This is the real payoff for me, it's not the money ) These are short kits and not for everyone to build, but they do give the builder a chance to change or build them the way they want too..... Keep up the great work !!!! Just call if you need anything.... Oh, PS. I do have a couple more of these kits made up in the shop that are looking for a builder... He,He,,,,, Thanks, Greg Garrison www.glhobbies.com

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/25/2007 5:39:48 PM)

Thanks Greg. I have come a long way since my last post I have some pics for ya.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/25/2007 5:49:02 PM)

Pic 1 &2 shows me bandsawing the ailerons out on the bandsaw. Some folks use a hobby knife to cut it out. I like the bandsaw better.
Pic 3 showes the rudder being sandwitched together . Notice the extra weight I used . Close to 100lbs.
Pic 4 shows a foul up. but represents what a good coating on gorilla glue should look like. very thin. I buttered the wrong side on this one.pay attention to detail.
Pic 5 & 6 showes the completed rudder.
Pic 7 shows the rear stab being glued up .Now I did this in one step. If I did it again I would do each half seperatly.
Pic 8&9 showes another shot of plane
Pic 10 showe the completed stab

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/25/2007 5:55:21 PM)

One thing that Halfscale mentioned you can build it the way you want too is right. After I finished the rear stab and glued it together I had a delta style stab. A screw up on my part, but after I studied it for awhile and it looks cool [8D] and decided to leave it alone. I don't think it will affect it any way. The change is not that noticeable.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/26/2007 4:03:21 AM)

Got to build some more this evening. I got the rear stab glued in place. Thanks Bob C. You helped alot on that prob![:D] Anyway , I started to do a little hinging. I decided to go with Robart 1/8" hinges. This is my first experience with this type hinge and I really like them. Not hard to use at all . I think they are better than ca hinges. I got all surfaces hinged which did not take long. Then I moved to how I was going to attach the wing to the fusealage. The plans call for a small block of wood placed out near the end of the aluminum tube with a screw drilled and taped into the tube. I did not like this way so i drilled a 5/8" hole in the wing and gorilla glue a dowel in . Then I drilled and tapped a 1/4 20 hole in the wooden dowel. I used thin ca to harden the threads and run the tap back in a few more times. I then drilled a matching 1/4' hole in the fusealage to accept the 1/4 -20 nylon bolt. I really like this method of attaching wings. Most ARF's wing is done this way. I plan on using magnets to keep the canopy on so it won't be a big prob to take it off.

FLYINMIKE-RCU -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/26/2007 4:10:14 AM)

HEY HALFSCALE : I'll See If I Can't Get Up There And Get One Of Those EXTRA EXTRAS Off Your Hands. Didn't Know You Made That One. I'll Call Sometime This Week. Irglnman : Maybe I Can Let You Know When I'm Going To Greg's And We Can Meet...If We Haven't Already !

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/26/2007 11:59:14 AM)

Great Mike !!I live 10 min away from Greg , so just give me a holler. This is a nice kit. I have really enjoyed putting it together. I need to see him sometime tomorrow to get some supplies.

Looking very NICE !

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/27/2007 3:34:48 AM)

lets look at some pics.
Pic 1 shows how I messed up and made a delta style stab ,but hey it looks cool so i left it look in Pic 10 and you will have a hard time noticing it.
Pic 2 shows me cutting the servo pocket in the wing. I used an exacto knife to do this. I measured up 4 " and squared off the aileron so my servo sets at an angle but parallel to the aileron. This is shown in the drawings. should end up with a bout 4" of 4-40 linkage as you can see in Pic 4.
Pic 5. Here is a good idea that worked very well. This planes wing is small enough for an arrow shaft to be chucked into my cordless drill and bored out for the servo wire. I first chucked the shaft into a metal lathe and sharpened the end . then it was ready to bore. It made a nice clean just right hole.
Pic 9 showes the rails I installed with 5 min epoxy for the servo to mount to.
Pic 11 shows how I am going to attach the wing to the fusealage. 1/4 -20 nylon bolt threaded into a dowel in the wing I gorilla glued 3 inches into the wing . That should be there till the cows come home. Will do the other wing tomorrow and start planning for the servos in the fusealage. I also have been thinking of the zenoah g 20 for this plane. !00 bucks cheeper than the evolution 26. I placed everything on the bathroom scales except the motor and come up with 5.5 lbs up to this point. this plane is goint to be close to 8-9 lbs . I am thinking closer to 8. should rock with the zenoah g20. I made up some test panels of fiberglass this evening and am going to test different types of paint. I am thinking of using Pactra type paint for the fusealage as it stays flexable. will test tomorrow to see. Ir also should be gas proof and glo proof. They use this stuff on rc truck and car bodies with no ill effect so why not fiberglass.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/28/2007 3:50:54 AM)

Extreamrc, you need to get you gear charged up and come on out to the New years day fun fly. Weather permitting. lots of fun and who knows what Del H. will have cooked up!!!!

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/29/2007 8:39:51 PM)

I'll try to make it .....

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (12/30/2007 6:11:25 AM)

Ok, back to the build. I got both wings sanded puttied and ready for covering as well as the elevator and rudder. All moving surfaces got 1/2 in popular dowels for the hard point. I plan on using 4-40 hardware.
The fusealage is scuffed up with 0000 steel wool and is waiting primer.Since I am going with gas, any auto type paint and primer will do as long as they match.
I installed the plate for the rudder pull pull servo. So far this is going to be the only servo that I am going to install because I may have to move the servos around due to ballancing issues. I don't have my engine yet so I can't install the remaining servo plates. I am hoping to be able to balance the plane by relocating the batteries and place the servos under the canopy. i will be plumbing the elevators with nylon tubing and 4- 40 rods.
I will post pics of my progress later.

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/1/2008 4:24:15 AM)

You get me all excited to come flying again then you cancel ..
We use to never cancel we flew in rain ,sleet ,snow and had a blast .
You guys are just getting to soft. hehe[:)]

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/1/2008 5:44:16 AM)

Sorry Dale[:(] . I am a wimp!!!!!! What do you folks think of this color scheme?

http://www.westernaustralia.com/en/Pages/Tour.aspx?n=30_Minute_Aerobatic_Flight_in_Race_Plane&pid=9009936
Look on the right side of the web page. I really like the look of that plane. Maybe in a red and white scheme. maybe some folks can give me some more ideas. My first Idea went south. My wife wouldn't let me put a naked woman on it . But hey I tried.
