I like the scheme of the of the paint on the plane. Good lines and looks fast even sitting on the ground I bet.Any color would look sharp.Just go with your instincts and have a ball.

Lets take a look at some pics !

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/2/2008 1:21:47 AM)

Pic 1 is how the servo will mount in the wing. I cut 2- 1/4"x2" pine blocks. Recess them in the wing to give the servo something to mount to. I used 5 min epoxy.
Pic 2 is the rudder servo plate.I placed the plate as low as possible so to keep the pull pull wires stright. I will then build a plate for the 2 elevator servos directly behind the rudder plate ,only slightly higher so the push rods just clear the rudder servo. I think 2 standard servos will work fine on the elevator halves.
Pic 3 shows everything primmed. I used a 2 part auto primer.
Pic 4,5, & 6 shows a close up shot of the detail on this plane. As you can see when the primer is applied , you can see all the imperfections . But don't worry. Nearly all fiberglass type kits will have this. The folks @ G & L Hobbies do a super job of fiberglassing and there was not much puttying to do .
Pic 7,8, & 9 Shows all the glass puttied up and ready to sand off. I went to the auto parts store and bought a tube of spot putty which works great for filling in all the small pin holes.

Pic 1 Shows the fire wall bolted up and ready for the engine. do you rember the fire wall ring I installed in the fusealage? Well the outer firewall bolts to that. Now by doing it this way I have access to the inside of the fusealage if i ever need to make adjustments or repairs.
Pic 2 shows the final dusting of primer.
Pic 3 -6 shows how I made the removable canopy. alot of room for adding details if you want to. I wonder who is gonna pilot this bird? I installed 2 small wood dowels in front and am thinking of a magnent to keep it in place. Is this a good idea?

Gray Beard -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/2/2008 2:36:13 AM)

Magnets, good idea. You can get small rare earth magnets from radio shack or hardware stores. Just don't go magnet to magnet, use magnet to A metal screw. If not you will think you screwed down your hatch when you try to remove it.
Don't ask how I know that. [:D]

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/6/2008 6:27:31 AM)

Today, I finished up on the servo and tank platform instilation. I placed the 8oz tank right on the cg so I won't have a ballance issue as the tank empties. I should be able to move it back and forth till I get it fine tuned for best ballance. I also screwed the platform in so if iI need to remove it ,6 screws and its out. I thought about doing the servos that way but thought the extra ridgedness from the epoxy may make a better instilation. I also started doing some covering. I am doing a blue and white theme and started with the white. any suggestions on the bottom. What is the very best visiable scheme to do . If you look back a few post you will see the colors I am doing. I went with the Western Austrailia dot com theme. A real fast looking plane. but the bottom is got me on hold.

LOOKIN GOOD............

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/7/2008 2:04:24 AM)

Pic 1 is how I installed the servo trays and tank tray.
Pic 2 is the posterboard templates of the top side of my wing. from these I will cut out the covering.
Pic 3 the white goes on first.
Pic 4 Completed top side of wing minus trim.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/10/2008 3:26:59 AM)

Well I got to do some covering tonight. One word I HATE COVERING!!!!!!!!! Both wings are finnished and Am going to start the fusealage this weekend hopefully will have pics posted soon.

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/12/2008 2:58:54 AM)

I think you really love covering?
What covering are you using?

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/12/2008 6:37:54 AM)

I am using oracover/ ultracoat with a little monocoat trim . Minnflier said you could sucessfully mix the 2 together so I am going to try.

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/12/2008 2:11:52 PM)

Oracover/Ultracoat are the two best ,monocote sucks...
I use ultracoat it's a lot easer to work with .
Getting the right temp on the iron is the key.

Pic 1 shows how I did my stripe. I used the templates that I used for te primary colors on the wings and laid my strip out. Then I exactoed the strip out of monocoat. We will see how mono over ultra will do.
Pic 2 & 3 Shows the results .I am not happy with the right wing and may redo it.
Pic 4 shows the cutout for the rear control surfaces. I plan on using nylon tubes and epoxy them in place.
Pic 5 another pic of the plane sure is lookin nice.

smullis -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/13/2008 6:35:20 PM)

Sure is looking good there james. Wont be long and you will be ready to paint. The striping looks great also. Sure is coming along and won't be long till your ready to mount the eng.

S Mullis

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/13/2008 8:13:22 PM)

WOW Thats lookin great, I like the colors......
I stopped at G&L HOBBIES on the way home and picked up some contest grade balsa to start a new profile like my old one.
When i get it sheeted i'll let you cover it.......hehe

Gray Beard -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/14/2008 1:20:14 AM)

Mono over Ultra works very well. On bigger pieces I use A low heat on my iron to keep any gassing from happening then do all around the edges with my high heat trim iron. The trim never comes off that way.
I'm installing my controls in my Extra right now and getting it set up for the CG then taking it apart again. I am going to glass it with 1/2 oz glass using the poly method so I have weeks of filling and sanding before I can start the glass work then painting.
I would gladly do your covering for you if you would do my sanding and filling, I just hate sanding!!![:)]

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/14/2008 3:16:21 AM)

Well I did't like the stripes. They looked too bad.Is there a better way to cut stripes and lay them on a curve?
Dale don't buy all the balsa I got another project in mind!!!
Steve, I got an engine in mind . thinking of a Magnum 120. Still not ruling the zen g20 out yet.

Dead eyes -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/17/2008 9:03:33 PM)

Nice plane ! Your build thread looks very detailed. I look forward to flying season this year and meeting everyone.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/18/2008 1:51:47 AM)

Thanks Steve. I don't recall anyone doing a build thread on this type of kit. At least not since I have been looking at this forum. So far it has been real exciting to build . This being my first kit of this type there is some changes I would make on my next one. Believe me, if this thing flies as good as I think its going to I will do another one. One change I would do is to make the ailerons bigger.Longer and wider. More 3D'ish. Drop the wing down to a lower position.( not sure about that but it sounds good). And maybe add flaps.(that sounds really cool, but may not be feisable.) Bigger elevators. That is some things I would do different on the next one.[:D]

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/18/2008 1:34:31 PM)

Well i've been talking with ol burgess and we are going to design a couple of planes for the up coming season......
I think you'll want one ....
You know burgess when he starts to build.....
