PIC 1is how I finnished off the elevator wire tubes . mixed up some 30 min epoxy with micro balloons real thick and formed it to my liking.
Pic2 shows the result.
On my next one i think I will make a small epoxy mold to do this that way I can make it look real nice. I like the way it came out .could have been netter though.

How long before the first flight??????

Budro -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/22/2008 8:00:13 PM)

Hey Large Lineman, looks like you have built a million of these in the past. I think building fiberglass kits are one faster and two lighter than regular built up construction with balsa only plus you have a little more freedom when painting. I saw you have been talking to flyinmike. He knows his smoke when it comes to building either way. Greg also has a nice 40 size Miss Los Angles which I built about eight years ago. A really nice flyer and good looking to boot. Well keep up the good work and keep us posted on the build.

What paint are you using?? Looks good. I'm going to give the Klass Kote A try. A friend has been using it and gives it very high marks. I looked it up on the net and for the price it should paint the plane for me.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/23/2008 1:00:40 AM)

Thanks for the words Buddy.
Greybeard I used the ultracoat brand paint in the spray cans. Suppose to match up with the covering but it lacks a bit there. Overall I am satisfied with the results. I learned one thing though , don't use newspaper the mask off anything . I sprayed the white first and let it dry 2 days before I masked it off to do the blue. Well this type paint "skins over" to touching strength in a few hours. so I didn't leave the newspaper on no longer than that .Well I peeled it off and got a nice line except where the paper touched the white I now have print on the white part. but its no big deal I thing I can fix it. I never heard of the paint you talked about but on my next plane I will use it. sounds like it is very glo resistant. THe paint I used does take along time to cure . about a week or so .

Gray Beard -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/23/2008 2:08:36 AM)

That's why I asked. I can build and cover with the best of them but when I have to paint it looks like A kid in grade school did it. I use the top flight and Ultra paints often and discovered if I didn't use there primer then it tended to peel with the masking tape. www.klasskote.com and it's A pretty good site and A lot of info on there paint plus the prices. As A 50/50 mix you don't have to buy too much though. Be ware, I had two colors in mind but my wife looked at the site and now it's going to be different then what is in my minds eye. I'm color blind so I don't really care as long as I can see it in the air.
My hope is this paint will make me look better then what I have been putting out over the years. I really do stink at painting.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/23/2008 2:24:55 AM)

I used a 2 part primer that I got from the auto paint store. The stuff is great not cheep but goes on and sands nice. It is a epoxy type primer that works with nearly all paint. seams like I paint better than covering. I guess I need to move where you are and we build planes together :-) .I have nt figured out how I am going to do the checkers on the cowel heck I may leave them off and put them on the rudder only.

BCTENN -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/25/2008 10:56:51 AM)

See G&L Hobbies he knows about a paint mask to do the checkers on the cowl. BobC.

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/26/2008 3:39:00 AM)

Will do Bob.
I have done a little bit of changes. I smoked the canopy with Pactra spray tint in a small rattle can. results are nice. I took off the striping on the wings and have decided to got to the auto parts store for some pinstriping. And I have the Zenoah g20 on order should be here by saturday. I hope I have not messed up with it. If I get it I will have some pics to post tomorrow.

Pic 1 Almost there !!!!
Pic 2 Mounting the Zenoah G20
Pic 3 G20 stripped of carb and muffler in cowl . As you can see the prop adapter lacks 1/2 inch making it to the proper end of the cowl. I think I will trim 5/8 inch from the cowl so it will slide up the fusealage further. I could make stand offs but I thing cutting the cowl will be a better idea.

smullis -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/27/2008 7:57:22 AM)

James: Are you gonna use your stock muffler or are you going to use a aftermarket? If you go with a inverted wrap around you will need standoffs so don't cut that cowl up yet unless you use a straight style side exhaust.Think your gonna have enough power.[:D] you should be able to do 3D all day long with that plane and engine combo.

Gray Beard -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/27/2008 3:42:16 PM)

I would go along with the stand offs. It will give you room for change as things go along.
Great looking flying machine!!

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (1/27/2008 6:14:31 PM)

Thanks guys I just happen to have a nice mill in my shop and I will make me some stand offs. I got to keep the plane 9 lbs of less for great performance. I think I will be real close.

Xtremerc -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (2/2/2008 11:48:42 PM)

Well hope your filling better this weather suxs warm ,cold ,warm, cold.
I was going to go out today but had to cut a 35 ft tree that up rooted during the storm the other night.
Guess you guys are busy after the storms..
Oh yea i cut my first cores in a year and a half turned out good.........
Later Dale

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (2/3/2008 3:23:36 AM)

Great Dale! That hot wire cutter plan you gave me works great for cutting foam. I have been doing some practicing myself in my spare time. Dang cold messed up a good weekend of flying.[:(] Any how I have done some tinkering on the extra this afternoon. I mounted the throttle servo and the ignition box to the fire wall and I said to myself what would happen if I fired the Zenoah g20 up? So I put a 15-8 top flight prop on her and after experimenting a few min to get use to gas she fired up on the 3 flip!!!!!!!!![:D] . This little engine has alot of pull to her !!! It took my dad and myself to hold her back!!!! any way I hop to finnish her up this week and hope for a good day to try her out . I will post pics of how I did the firewall and the completed setup later.

Pic 1 Sullivan tail wheel . I really like this setup. It works fine and easy on the rudder
Pic 2 Beginning to mill out the standoffs for my engine. 3/4" aluminum
Pic 3 & 4 Shots of the finished stand offs. came out perfect with the cowl.
I am starting to plumb the servos and will post pics of that later as well of the way I mounted the motor, ignition,& throttle servo.

U DA MAN !!!!

lrglnman -> RE: G & L Hobbies Extra 300 build thread (2/9/2008 1:30:33 AM)

Making the stand offs was a challenge as i never used a metal lathe before. but I took my time and all is well. Had a good instructor giving me points.
