I received my second Diablo from scratch and dent and flew it yesterday. Basically more of the same. This radio glitches as well, very disappointing. Very tail heavy. I tried the dual pod and it actually flew OK. It is quite heavy and does not have a noticable increase in performance. Not worth it.

My wing came off twice in the air causing one very significant crash. Now my wings are glued on.

Still experimenting with landing gear.

Correct me if I am wrong but a 4 cell lipo will give my upgraded diablo a little more punch than the stock 3 cell. Any good recomendations on battery and charger. Looks like the stock is only good for 3 cell. I have the recomended ammo setup, and I am hopping it will handle the extra current.
Thanks

I don't know much at all, but from looking at the Hyperflow website, you get a good bit more punch. Really rough numbers, but looks like %90 more power, %45 more thrust, and %25 greater efflux speed. I wonder if that means %25 faster? It does say that this is burst use only! I wonder why, if you have the 25 amp ESC and the 4s set up rates at 22.3A, what will fry if you use continuous power? >>>>>>>>>>edit, I looked it up, the motor is my guess, it's rated for 11.1V, 12 amp constant and 25A burst>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I just ordered a $35 ESC and 4850KV inrunner BL for my Diablo and am really looking forward to seeing what that does with 3s lipo. I'll let you know.

Erik St. Was that $35 for both motor and esc?

Yes, $35 for both with shipping, very cheap, isn't it! Well, it's coming from China, on the slow boat. It will be weeks before I see it, but I just can't afford the $80 from LHS, if they even had the right stuff. Someone else said that when sending money to china, it's gone, and you just hope to get something. No returns or anything, just a gamble. So far it's worked a couple times for me, I hope this one is the same.

Thanks. What have you heard about this motor? Someone recommended it on this forum.

After thinking about the radio glitches, I wonder if anyone has tried moving the receiver to a different area of the plane? Maybe to an area that is more exposed perhaps. Maybe its just a reception issue. Can you put a receiver on the outside of a plane?

I looked at that one too, but "out of stock". I can't take the unknown wait time! I've been waiting on a DX6I Spektrum too long, so what I did order was IN STOCK and it's still going to take a while. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4202

Maybe it won't fit, maybe it won't work, maybe these guys heat up too quickly. Time will tell, but I'm just happy to be out only $16.50. Going through life as a cheapskate like myself usually works, but you do have to accept the occasional failures of the cheapest thing on the market.

Radio glitches: I've noticed that simply handling the ESC causes servo glitches! So I think sometimes it's actually on-plane issues rather than radio interference. SOmetimes it is external noise, but not always. I've got my RX wrapped in aluminum foil, the placebo effect works a little! I've just gotten used to the glitches, they seem very brief, and mine at least doesn't add goofy input, rather no input == glide.

At 4850kv that's gonna be a screamer. What ESC are you going to use? Are you going to use the 3s LiPo that came with the Diablo or upgrade to a higher mAh 3s or 4s? If it works good I may install it in mine as well.

I have been living with the glitches for now also. Maybe there's nothing that can really solve it.

I am shopping around for a good quality radio I can grow with. Been looking at the Spektrum DX7 and the Futaba 7C. Do have any knowledge on these radios? I hear more good things about the Futaba.

Ok...
First, Newjak this is Totalsnafu from Wattflyer. (Hi B!)
The brushless has made improvement on the Diablo. Vast improvement. I did a little modding, at Newjaks suggestion, and made a "shield" for the pod. I used 2 plastic spoons (thanks Wendy's) and epoxy to make a sort of skid plate for the pod.

The skid plate helps keep the pod intake off the ground. It works. On landing, I only had a little dirt kick up into the pod, compared to a whole bunch. One spoon was placed on the front of the pod facing toward the rear. The other spoon was cut in half and placed on top of and angling down toward the intake. I was generous with the epoxy (too generous in some spots and I need to sand it) so that it was secure and a bit harder. The spoon that's in front of the intake only slightly disrupts airflow, but takes the blunt of the landing. I'm going to experiment with mounting a spoon forward on the fuse to make a skid plate for the nose. When this thing lands, the pod digging in makes the nose impact from the sudden stop. My intentions are to make it slide along the spoon instead of having a blunt impact. I tried landing gear, and actually had rear and nose gear installed, but they add too much weight. The skid idea (thanks Newjak) keeps the belly off the ground and adds less weight. Might look a little funny, but if it flies, I don't care.

Details of my brushless upgrade are here in this thread. Go back a few pages.

I also will be installing a DX6 receiver and the advanced wings in the next week. I do not trust the stock radio or receiver. I've invested too much time at this point to have to worry about glitches from a crappy receiver.

Relatively new to the game, but then again, it does not take long to realize this plane has issues. 4 launches on a fresh li-po battery and it could not get the strength to gain altitude. It miraculously survived a terrible first day. I have since purchased the dual-fan for supposedly more power but have come to realize that only one motor is working, the other is sporadic. Also, if it matters... it's not as good looking a plane as it appears. Once i get the power straightened out I'll paint it black to look better, then pray that I get it up and over the hill and I actually hope I never find it. Prediction...they won't be selling this product in 18 months.

capepilot: forget about the dual motor pod, its too heavy for this plane. Just run the single motor with a brushless upgrade. Not the ammo though, get something with more punch.

do you mean your diablo could not gain altitude with the stock set up? if so, somethings wrong with your motor, replace it right away. Mine has always been able to fly, my trouble has been radio glitches mostly.

One thing I did was to "break in" the brushed motor with my charger. I heard it helps with power and I think it just might.

oh ideal, you're my new hero, SPOONS!!?? awesome! we are all wasting our time on this plane, having lots of fun, and being ingenious. I have only used parts of kites, other planes, cardboard, and plastic packaging, but never a spoon! Good job. I can't wait to see how a BL 4850KV works, I will either tear the wings off or burn up something.

Northchim, I have all 3s lipo, from 1500 stock to 2200. I ordered a "simple" 30A from hobbycity (china), but I think I may never see it. no answer phone, e-mail returned to sender "box full", money sent to china is a gamble.

Lastly, capepilot, you bought an Edsil! relatively poor performance, but with some work it's lots of fun and a solid performer! Maybe it's because you overcame poor design, maybe because you are flying an OK model, but it teaches alot, and CAN work very well with technique and improvements. I still like mine (love-hate) after all our battles and I haven't even yet put in an upgraded moter!
