northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/4/2008 9:41:11 PM)

I actually think it flys just as well if not better too. I don't think the vector palste makes any difference either.

I am glad to hear that the extra thrust from a brushless motor doesn't affect the flight performance. That's great news. When I made that video there was sustained winds of 10-15 mph and the plane really struggled.

Let me know how your bird flys with the advanced wings. When do you expect you'll receive them? I am dreaming up another idea that has to do with the wings this time. I may purchase a set also to try out something crazy.

idealhobbies -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/4/2008 11:06:43 PM)

I should have them within the next couple of days. I ordered them last Friday. The plane really does struggle with the wind. The wings (trainer) are supposed to be for slow flight therefore do not work well in the wind. They flex a lot and the think that the wing tips actually cause a lot of the rocking that I get when it's windy. Any cross wind catches on them. If I can get this thing to fly good with the advanced wing, I may actually consider putting brushless in the duel pod. The pod would go on a serious diet first to try to lighten it up. It's just too heavy stock. We'll see. I have not made up my mind yet. I'm beginning to like to Diablo since I've gotten it to actually fly. Who knows, it may turn out to be quite a screamer with a little work. I'm also thinking about modding the canopy. It blocks the airflow with the pod on top. I may trim it down an create a slope downward toward the nose to make the air channel into the duct.

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/4/2008 11:13:53 PM)

Northchim your very clever. you should replace the guy that created this plane originally. I want to address the wing tip issue, some people say they dont like the wingtips removed however I have mine cut off and prefer it. it seems more agile, albeit less stable. But if your flying it in the first place then its no big deal just move the stick where you want it and it will go there.

northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/5/2008 4:02:48 AM)

idealhobbies: I agree that the dual is way too heavy, however how are you gonna take off any significant amount of weight?

Canopy: Just a guess, but I don't think the canopy blocks the airflow much if any. The canopy top is rounded and to me it looks like the air would travel right over the top of the canopy and strait into the fan. I'm not an expert on aerodynamics though.

Maybe you can help me with my advanced wing idea. My idea is to mod the plane into a delta wing platform. Jets with deltas are very stable flyers and I think I can take some weight off at the same time. What do you think?

animal cracker: Hey, if you like how it flys stick with it.

paul daniel -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/6/2008 12:39:44 AM)

Northchim: You and are on the same page. I was looking at the Salamander Jet that the Germans had in WW2 that had the engine on the top. Reason being it was going to fly from grass fields like we all do. So I thought I'd give it a try. It took all of 5 minutes to make the change. It actually flies a bit better, especially at launch since there's wind going over the tail surfaces right out of the gate unlike before where you had to build up speed. I do some slope soaring and might use this for that. Might even cut out the ailerons to make it a 4-channel with the big wing. I did try the duel pod and short wings and it flew like a brick. And to think, I was giving some of you guys a hard time for sticking with this. Silly me. I tried to upload a picture but it's been disabled.
Paul

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/6/2008 12:55:17 AM)

Hey Paul, I have family in Pewaukee just off the lake do you know any Ackers? Anyway. Today I flew the advanced wing with the brushless. Its getting better but will never be a rocket. When you turn it still want to nose down a bit but not bad and when its time to land you had better be ready, not much of a glide path for this puppy. I also have no weight in the nose just the battery all the way forward. Lastly my engine is permanently glued to the bottom unfortunately or I would do the same as northchim.

paul daniel -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/6/2008 1:08:37 AM)

No but I go down there and fly off the water during the summer with my PBY. I agree, no glide at all with the twin pod and short wing. Mine fell out of the sky when I turned downwind. Looked good crashing though. Glued it back together then sold the upgrades on Ebay. Don't like flying bricks.

idealhobbies -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/6/2008 2:20:02 AM)

North,

First, replacing the brushed with brushless motors will reduce some weight. I have not figured out the diet yet, I'd have to take a serious look at it. Delta wing would be cool. Try making one out of foam board. I was thinking around the same lines and was actually looking at taking 3/4 to 1 inch foam board and sanding and trimming it into a wing. I've seen several wing builds and was thinking about making a wing myself. www.spadtothebone.com is a nice place to learn about making custom aircraft.

northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/6/2008 4:25:33 AM)

Flew today with the wing tips off. It flew great. There staying off.
Bought a Spektrum DX7 today from ebay. As soon as it comes in, I'm chucking the Diablo receiver for a Spektrum. No more glitches.

animal acker: which BL/esc do you have?

idealhobbies: which BL/esc did you get? Where's a good place to get foam board?

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 2:28:04 AM)

Northchim I got the recommended ammo 20-40-3500 that is advertised along with the plane because I didnt know any better, but I read on the diablo junk forum that a james199 got something that goes 100 mph! I dont know that much about this brushless stuff and how to know what the kv means or mAh exactly its important that I learn it though. Also I got kicked out of the park by my house by the ranger, apparently there is a county ordinance against flying there. Is this Russia!

northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 2:40:21 AM)

animal: I saw the post by james199 also. He's gonna have to make a video for me to believe his Diablo can fly that fast.

brushless motor breakdown: 20-40-3500

the 20 means diameter of the motor in milimeters
the 40 means length of the motor in milimeters
the 3500 means kilovolts or kv, or basically rpm

Hyperflow makes bigger motors that are optional in the Diablo. the biggest is an Ammo 24-45-3790 running a 4s LiPo it makes 48,000 rpm and efflux is 165mph. This motor sounds very like it would really rock.

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 3:11:06 AM)

If the kv or rpm is 3790 how can the rpm be around 48,000 thats a large difference also if you go to a 4 cell lipo dont you need a bec to install or is there a esc that has this included? I was told that if you go to a 4 cell that the esc would not be able to handle it and cut out.

northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 5:01:08 AM)

Sorry I did not explain the kv very well. Using the 3790kv motor as an example: take 3790 and multiply by the number of volts in your battery pack 11.1v for a 3s Lipo, you get roughly the rpm.
3790 x 11.1 = 42,069 rpm

Your motor for example is a 3500kv. With a 3s LiPo = 3500 x 11.1 = 38,850 rpm

You have to have an ESC rated high enough for the amps the battery will put out. You could not run a 4s Lipo with the ESC you have probably. You would need to upgrade to a 35 amp ESC most likely.

northchim -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 5:03:58 AM)

Check out this hyperflow manual. Page 2 has all the optional motors recommended by hyperflow and the stats for them.

White Raven -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/7/2008 1:23:20 PM)

Hey guys :) Good to see some interesting mods have been done. Okay, so who's working on some light weight weaponry for her? I got my two, and was about to order 2 more when I seen $15 off $125! Two birds could have been shipped for $130! Not bad, BUT, they were out of the $68 ones. Mine has both tips busted, and some hard to fix damage to the tail. My brothers has only the wing tips damaged. His first plane! I hope to get out in the next couple weeks to fly. Busy here. I hope that perhaps hobbico reworks the diablo. It has great possiblilities. First, I think they should come with a brushless to start with.

All that said, if you guys could and/or would be willing, I would like to ask that if you are going to trash anything on you diablos, if you would consider selling them or sending them. I'm not really asking for handouts, so much as I am asking to help recycle. I'm not poor, but things are a bit hard where I'm at. If you decide to trash a radio/reciever, or motor/esc, please consider mailing them... not just to me, but maybe some other modelers who could use back ups or cheap crash solutions. Most of us are willing to pay for the shipping, in most cases. Please just give it a thought. I have no problem giving alittle cash for things that most would just junk. One mans junk, is another mans treasure. Hope you all have a good day! :)

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/8/2008 10:11:37 PM)

I read that you guys are buying damaged diablos from the maker, how could I go about this. I mean to say what link do I go to? Please respond.

paul daniel -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/9/2008 1:37:15 AM)

Hey guys: Flew the Diablo again today with the pod on the top and have a question about that thrust vector thing on the back. With the pod on the top, it vectors thrust up. When it was on the bottom, down. Did anybody just take it off and see what happens? I took the long wing and took the dihedral out of the tips today and am going to cut ailerons into the wings. I'll let you know how it flies. I actually got it to do loops today which it would not with the pod on the bottom.
Paul

willywill -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/9/2008 2:11:44 AM)

I just got a diablo as my first ever rc plane. It is fun but for anyone else who is thinking about it. There are a few out of the box adjustments that need to be made. First, mount the pods on top of the plane. Really helps with landing the thing. Second, move reciever and speed control as far forward as possible. Also remove some foam so the battery can slide father forward. I like it and have a blast fling the thing.

Erik St. -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/9/2008 3:01:50 AM)

Yes wiliy will, in your first post ever on this forum you reiterated what I have been preaching.....don't add weight to the Diablo, move it forward. I'm glad you like the plane so far, should be even better with a brushless upgrade, which I am in the middle of doing right now.

Paul Daniel: I assume with the pod on the bottom the thrust thing helped lift and on the top it would do the opposite..bad. I took mine off a while ago, and have never looked back. I want the wings to generate lift through speed, not some pseudo-harrier-thrust-vector thing by the deflector plate. When you say it did loops, do you mean from level flight? Mine does not do that; but if I drop altitude for few seconds it wil do 3 ro 4 loop in a row.

paul daniel -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/9/2008 2:02:04 PM)

Yup Erik from level flight! I would have to dive to make up speed and the pull the loop. Don't know if that thurst deflector had anything to do with it but I'll take it off this morning and see what happens. Also I have made modifications to the trainer wings. I have take out the dihedral at the tips and am going to install ailerons. I think the Diablo might have the potential as a nice glider. There is NO WAY somebody is getting this to go 100-150 unles they put in stronger servos.
Paul

Erik St. -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/9/2008 11:58:19 PM)

northchim, thanks for posting your first flight video. That's sort of what mine did. We have seen may other videos but they are about successful flights. The ones that go poorly are much more entertaining.

So what was you analsis of the up - down flight? Mine did it because it was still tail heavy.

My brushless 4850kv gets hooked up tonight....I had no idea how small a 20-40 motor was, and it wasn't that easy for me to install the thing.

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/10/2008 2:55:40 AM)

Update... I took off the thrust deflector and did noticably better. However, I was showing off for my girlfriend, doing some low level streeking and tried an inversion while swooping and collided with a tree! oops. I must say it was rather dramatic and some what heartbreaking yet a right of passage in some sense. Now I must decide do I want a new plane or stick with the diablo? The reciever and esc along with the brushless are ok but the flying brick is no more. Any suggestions besides watch out for that tree?

animal acker -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/10/2008 4:32:32 AM)

I like the L-39 but the diablo as slow as it is had a rudder and made for more maneuverability when acting like a fool. What else is out there with this capability?

idealhobbies -> RE: flyzone diablo (3/10/2008 12:51:33 PM)

Minus your crash... I can't say much, I put my T28 into a tree last Thursday, how was your flying? Were you doing good? How many flights had you gotten in? Another factor.... do you have a flight sim to practice on? I'm asking these questions to help base an idea on your flight proficency level so that we can recommend another plane. If you were doing well, and had a few flights in (successful) I would say that you may be able to handle a Parkzone T28 Trojan. It's an excellent bird.
