I have a JR 9303. I fly a couple of weekends a month. I fly at a small club. They are pretty good about not turning on radios.
It is in a relatively rural area.
Is it worth it to spend the money? Should I just buy a few more pcm receivers that "are junk" now? Hell, I have been flying fm with no problems.
OK, I have an ultimate bipe I like. I have a profile plane I wouldn't give a damn if it hits the dirt. I have 3 helis I like.
Let the suggestions fly. (get it?)

Sounds like you have it figured out. It is analogous to buying a new car. The old one works but I like the new one. I changed over not because it was better(which it probably is) but because of one club member on my channel twice and another new member who put his card on the wrong channel. I figured the $1000 changeover cost worth it in the long run.

I moved, but I fly GS and have a 100 member club with lots of new people joining every year. I'd say in your case unless you go to a lot of fly-ins, no not yet but the time will come when you will make the move. Dennis

Same answe-------- different slant.

Do you want to stand still or move on? That is another way to look at (distill) your question.

If it ain't broke...don't fix it.

My situation was like yours with one exception....there is 1 ex-club member with a dial-a-crash radio. He has it out for me, so I took the precaution.

btw-I have a 9303 w/spektrum module and I like it, no problems so far....but I would have been perfectly happy to have stayed with 72Mhz...

When I switched to my new DX7 i was more interested in the "Model Match" feature than anything else. I had never been shot down but I have lost 2 planes in the past by having the wrong plane dialed in on my transmitter. I'm flying more expensive planes than ever before and the new radio will pay for itself.

I hope you still do a full check of your control surfaces before each flight???
If you become complacent and depend too much on Model Match you're still leaving yourself open for an unpleasant surprise.
Nice feature, but no substitute for a proper pre-flight check.
Just my 2 cents, others mileage may vary.
Pete

I fly at a field that is considered "dirty" with regard to radio interference, but I haven't seen a radio glitch in over two years. I'm still flying 72Mhz FM on most of my planes, although I did just finally start flying my first PCM receiver.

I have a feeling that a lot of mediocre pilots who think they lost planes to "radio issues" are going to be disappointed when they upgrade to spread spectrum radio systems and find out that it wasn't their radios, it was just them.

I have decided to upgrade my 9303 with the spektrum module simply because I don't trust some of the guys at my field to follow the rules. We have had several incidents that have cost several big dollar planes. My most expensive plane is a 50cc Aeroworks Extra 260 so it isn't tremendously expensive but I would hate to lose it, particuarly to someone elses mistake.

I have to agree with "micp"... at my field there's a "outlaw" field for small electric planes 2 miles down the road. The "outlaws" won't even tell us the freq they have!

I know, but before you scream "call the cops" you must know i live now in a ex-communist rep. and there's NO mandatory pilot cards NOR club regulations NOR mandatory insurance!!!!

So for me going Spectrum (next week) is heaven sent!

food for thought,

cheers Vasek

This type of situation is hard to avoid and why I eventually will make the switch, first in my larger glow planes, then slowly work my way down the lineup.
We recently had a documented shoot down at our field by kids trying to fly a parkflyer at a schoolyard too close to our field. Only reason we knew it was a true freq. conflict was that our our club El Presidente just happens to be a crossing guard at that school and crossed the kids carrying the remains of their plane that afternoon. They claimed their plane went nuts and crashed, he ask to look at their transmitter and noted the channel. Days later when he heard about the crash at our field, well no surprise that the trainer that went down was on the same channel as the kids at the school yard.
Best of luck,
Pete

I know the exact time I decided to make the switch--I was flying my new 50cc Yak at my field. Was about ten minutes into the flight and I saw about 100 yards away some guys flying a small park flyer. I quickly landed and drove over to them to as what channel they were on. The looked at me and said "whats that mean"!!! This was their first time out and they had no clue what they were doing. THAT is why I switched.

As soon as the DX7 was available -I sold/ gave away/threw away EVERYTHING on crystal controlled (specific frequency) setups -I never bought the dial a crash stuff-
Silly ?
not to me -I had already seen the "I wanna fly" guys with their freebie radios at the field. the frequencies were all over the place and that included old sets -pre gold sticker etc..
-I guess if one lives in a very sparsely populated area (North Pole)-those radios are fine -
I was flying my latest foamie on 2.4 in a local park and guess what -- there was a father and son act running their NON 2.4 stuff -on the pavement . grinning like cats and not a clue about their frequencies . I simply nodded hello and carried on --
The 2.4 radios and rx I have all work as advertised for me (Spektrum )-
at this point in time I would not touch the older stuff with a hot meat fork----
