Hi Guys,

I have a brand new Park 480. When I got the motor out of it's factory box it felt very sweet and turned very smoothly (quieter than any other motor I own).

Since setting up the ESC, a Castle Creations Thunderbird 36, and having run the motor for no more than 2 minutes at a maximum draw of 24A, it has gone quite stiff. When the prop is flicked it stops almost immediately. Compared to my other motors, Hyperion, Hacker and Torque, it just does not feel right any more.

Is this common with these motors? Is it something I should be worried about?

I thought I would ask these questions before I either stripped the motor down to investigate or sent it back to my supplier.

Ah! - boy that's strange.

I have just disconnected the motor from the ESC, and it feels back to normal. Reconnect it and it goes stiff.

Also tried the motor on a Hyperion Titan 50A ESC, no problems at all.

It must be some form of back EMF - that's all I can think it is. Anyone else experienced this on the Thunderbird ESC's

Totally normal...the ESC is still holding a charge when you unplug the battery pack. It takes approximately a half hour for the motor to begin turning freely again.

Hello Joe,

Your comment would make sense to me if it were not for the fact that it is over two days since the Thunderbird ESC and motor were connected to a battery pack!

Out of curiosity I powered up the Titan 50A. Upon disconnect from the Li-po's the motor still behaved exactly as normal, so that particular ESC could not be holding any sort of charge. If the Castle Creations does, why does it, and surely it can't still be holding a charge after this length of time?

What size prop? 12x6? Too much.Will turn but overheats the motor. If not the esc has it's brake on. maybe?

What is the brake status on all the controllers you've tried.

Also...some controllers also have "dynamic" brake...to short the windings with resistance of a small value.

Lubrication?

Condition of the windings visible through the case?

Bearings?

All ok?

Then the controller type has a dynamic brake

There are capacitors involved here, and they can hold a charge for a looooooong time.

Oh, and spinning the motor could be charging the capacitors back up, as motors act like generators when you spin them by hand.

Whatever the reason for the "resistance" when the ESC is connected.... since everything is fine without the ESC connected, then you are good to go!

In my experience, this behaviour is normal for Castle ESCs.
