What's up guy's, I have been wanting to get one of them $20 diff lockers from towerhobbies and I wanted to keep the work that I did on my Savvy as profesional as possible. But I thought about coughing up money on a simple part that takes place of the spider gears and said to myself... you know what, screw it! I'm gonna save $20 and warm up my hot glue gun. Heres my plan; I'm going to take apart the diff internals and clean the grease, oil, etc. off of them and place them back in the diff cup. Then I will plug in my $5 hot glue gun from Family Dollar and simply fill the diff up to the brim and let 'er dry. I've heard of people using JB weld or epoxy to do the job, but tonight I'm feeling too cheap to even do that. So I will try the hot glue techniqe and see how it goes. If it ends up being a disaster, oh well, I have a spare diff set in the tackle box. My goal of this project is to give my rear-end full possi without spending a dime. So I'll let y'all know later how it turns out. Any of you try something like this before? The way I see it, a penny saved is a penny earned (especially when R/C parts will empty the wallet faster than you can say, "Bob's your uncle"

Sounds like a plan. Cheap and easy.

I just hope that I have some glue sticks laying around or I might end up haveing to shove peices of metal and tape in there (cheaper yet)

I'd jam the gears with something solid first then glue it up. I don't think the glue by itself will dry hard enough to keep the gears from turning.

Good news guy's, I did it and everything works very well. Just make sure that all the internals are nice and clean. If your doing what I did with the glue gun then place all the spider gears inside the case (basically everything but the top/pinion gear). Then basically pump the diff case full of glue (work quickly though as the glue will cool and harden fast). Now be sure not to fill it up past the small spider gears until you are ready to put on the top, when you are ready then fill it up to the brim. When you put the ring gear assembly back on, make sure the screw holes line up (this will save you the hassle when the glue cools). So I already got it back on the truck and it's hard as a rock. I think it should hold out well. In fact I did the "rigging" over at my cousins and was able to convince him to glue his too. So now we both have it done to our Savvy's. I'd get pics, but it is already back on the truck. I recommend this way of diff locking to anyone who might be tight on money as I am. So happy bashing!

What are the advantages of locking up the diffs?

Better traction in mud, loose dirt, sand, snow, etc. It allows both wheels on a "axle" to spin at the same speed and that increases traction dramatically.

JB Weld is a better choice than glue.

I'd think it *might* transfer a little bit more power to the wheels as the diff being unlocked should allow them to slip a bit, it'd also work better for climbing stuff, and would let you drift/power slide more too....

I wouldn't want to use glue or JB weld in mine though, I'd want something I didn't have to throw the whole diff away if I decided to go back to having an unlocked one....(that's worth the $20 for the diff-locker to me)

When mine was locked up, I ran Maximizer's "lunchbox locker" that just replaces the spider and side gears in the differential. It worked great and like you mentioned, wasn't permanent-it could easily be converted back to a "open diff" if you saved the old parts.
