No problem, I don't know about the payton Manning thing though.

I know all about Payton Manning. He's the best QB ever.

Craig,

this is very nice covering. Can you explain how you make the oil drop pattern? Do you just cut it out with cissors or a special knife ?
I have just finished my hybrids woodwork and must start to think about the covering

I covered everyting in my base color Yellow and then I layed out the design on one wing pannel with 1/16 fine line tape. I then layed a piece of the plastic backing off of some of the monokote i had already used and marked over that with a felt marker. Then i layed out 2 pieces of covering the size i wanted and put them front to back then i layed the clear plastic over that and taped everything down. Then i took my exacto knife and cut it out. This will make 2 pieces exactly the same but mirrored to each other. I think the key is once you start to cut not to stop and start a lot or you will end up with jagged edges, also i used an old balsa building board to cut on which helps to hold your knife.

I did learn to just lay the plastic over the item to be covered and to roughly draw out what you want, then use the plastic over your covering as a guide.

Craig,

How much covering did you use for the base coat? I just ordered one 25' roll of white and a 25' roll of metallic red for the trim and hope that is enough - or way overkill. I am done with the fuse and tail and about to start on the wings.

Is that 25' total for the entire airplane?

I think i used a 25' roll and 1 or 2 6' rolls for the base color. I used about 10' or 12' foot for the trim.

Here is a picture of the tail surfaces done I'm now installing my servos.

And by the way the best way that i found to apply the trim is to use the windex method. After it has been on for a couple hours and everything has dried i go back over the edges with trimkote solvent then i go over the edges with an iron.

i'm also getting ready to cover my edge......i have 2 questions before i can start covering and was wondering if someone can help me with them.

is it necessary to dual bevel the aileron? just with one edge bevel there seems to be a lot of throw.

could i use a DA engine template to drill the engine mounting holes? i have the engine in another plane which is difficult to remove.

thanks.............a few pics of the plane before i start covering

It depends on you, with the aileron bevel, I would say yes just because thats what the plans call for.

As far as the engine drill template i say go ahead and drill for it. Did you build in right thrust or are you going to add shims. You may want to move the engine to the left to compensate for right thrust. i move mine over 3/16 to 1/4 to the left for right thrust.

By the way your airframe is looking good.

thanks.......... it seems the covering will have to wait till i dual bevel the ailerons.

i haven't put any right thrust in the firewall so, i'll shift the engine a bit.
to vertically position the template do you think i could measure the thrust line from the plan? or is there another way?

For my engine installation, I simply used the plans. I measured up from the bottom of the fuse to the bottom mounting holes, drew a horiz. line on the firewall using those measurements. Did the same to locate left to right mounting. I moved the vertical line 5mm to the left for thrust. The plans show the DA 50 which makes it easy. It definately would have been easier to do before installing the firewall.

Well. Here we are. The fuse is almost done. Got to get some black to finish the canopy. I can't seem to bring myself to spend 15.00 for such a small piece of black. LOL

Got to cover the stab and glue it in. Then I can move on to the fun stuff.

Do it in the same color blue that you have on the wings.

That's what I did and I am so glad that I did. I drilled the holes before the firewall ever thought about being glued in. Doing that after finishing the fuse seemed like it would be a major PITA.

Me too ! definitely easier...always pays to think a few steps ahead...

besides, i think you would need extra long drill bits if you waited till just before covering.

hey Crash...mines done in black so i got pieces left over..... ...want some...

for anyone who is getting ready to cover, if you cut the pieces for the fuselage carefully you can have 2 extra pieces just long/wide enough to do one side of each aileron.....those long extra pieces are hard to come by once you get into it a ways.

mines done in black and translucent red (translucent red is micro-lite covering) white striped wings underneath.

pictures to follow when it's complete...
