Craig, the best thing to do is check with your local clubs or hobby shop for professional builders. It is much better to support your local builders and plus you save the hassles of shipping a built plane.....which is always risky. If you live in an active flying area chances are there are several modelers available for building services.

Well. I was a bit worried about weight throughout the build. I remember some of the older hybrids reporting in at over 18lbs. Mine came in at 16lbs 7oz. Not bad at all considering the cannister setup. I am extremely happy. I weighed it with a rapala digital fish scale.

I am building the second wing panel right now. But, I have ran into a snag. I don't have enough hardwood for the bottom (top on the building board) wing spar. No where around here sells stuff over 36" and I really don't want to spend ten bucks on shipping for a 70 cent stick of wood 48" long. So, can I splice two pieces together? This is really bugging me.

I would only splice if that was my only option. If you do splice the spar i would cut at 45 degree angle glue together and then run carbon fiber strips on both sides(Top & Bottom) at least 12 inches past the splice on both sides.

If you have a table saw you can cut your own from a good solid piece of pine, or you could use some hardwood.

I put 5 more flights on my Hybrid yesterday. The DL is really getting strong! This plane is really fun. I'm gonna have to figure out how to get some weight in the nose. The plane climbs pretty fast flying inverted.

cwhite,
I put about 7 more on mine yesterday and still loving the plane. You may consider a jtec wrap around muffler for the Dl it adds a little more weight and quietens it down and will not change the RPM. If you don't have a spinner on it try that i had to add a spinner and that helped it a lot.

Hi,

I had to splice as well and the solution described by Craig is really working well. I used epoxy to glue in the carbon, very strong.
Moreover I am not the only one who faced this problem. So this is a proven solution

I just broke down and ordered some hardwood stock for the spar from BalsaUSA. .70 cents for the wood and ten bucks for shipping. At least I will feel better when pulling some g's.
