I LOVE the smell of Nitro! After a day at the field I can smell it on my clothes and fingers when I get home. I walk around sniffing my fingers all evening (doesn't quite smell as good as that other pink stuff! )

Hi All,
Ain't it something how a smell can bring us back to another place and time.

Yes it can. And there was something interesting I discovered earlier this year. I did an "experiment" to see if old glow fuel would still work. I have several jugs/cans of fuel, some of it 20 years old I think it was. Anyway, when starting an engine on that old fuel, a smell came out that instantly triggered a long buried memory. And that is because the fuel blended today does not smell exactly the same as fuel blended 20 years ago. So even though modern fresh fuel smells like we always thought, well in fact it doesn't. So when I got a whiff of the old fuel exhaust it triggered that long ago feeling. Really neat!

Dave Im curious; I know you ve been in this hobby a long time, and I read about your mechanic background, but: Have you actually had catastrophic failures because of Cool Power fuel and how many?? I mean, I run synthetics for several reasons, and dont run castor for several as well. But Ive never implied any castor oil based fuel as "cruel".

I really think its a very unfair comment for a commercially available and widely used fuel, coming from a RCU moderator. Ive been running cool power exclusively for a long time (and I fly much more than casual sunday fliers), and also I got a couple of friends that have been using it forever which neither I nor them had any fuel - based failures with our engines.

I will respectfully disagree. Moderators here often express personal preferences. While I don't always agree with their opinionsI think it much preferable to the views expressed in the print magazines which never, ever have any thing negative to say about any product.

I hope Dave and all others will continue to express their likes and dislikes in order to give us more information upon which to base our own opinions.

im with Jessie, i have learned almost everything here on RCU, and thanks to the individual beliefs of everyone on here i have suceeded in becoming a decent pilot and modeler, i have had to go out on a limb sometimes but i believe that your not as good at something if you have not tried a few thing that have failed.

there is nothing as good as a little castor in your engine, had three fail due to rust but not since adding a little castor to my diet

About Castor and Synthetic Lubricants:
I had a fuel company back in the 1970's. I experimented with all sorts of synthetics and castor-synthetic blends. The two most popular synthetics back then were Klotz and MA-731 made by Union Carbide. While the plain old bushing engines mostly used for control line REQUIRED castor, the modern ringed ball-bearing engines do well on synthetic. Modern non-ringed ABC type engines should definitely have castor in the fuel. Call me old-fashioned or whatever...I still prefer a castor/synthetic blend with 5% castor.I love the smell of the exhaust, and I agree with Clarence Lee that nothing is better than castor for model airplane engines.

You are correct from that point of view. But Im talking about "bashing" a well known product.

And also, where the rpms exceed 15-16k, then I think castor is a good thing (as I have used alot in the past with small rc car racer engines turning 30-35k rpm), but anything lower than 15-16k rpm - its not essential IMO.

When refering to fairness of an RCU moderator note that Dave does post the following discalimer:

"Just keeping the record straight.
This opinion is mine, not RCU's. "

We often have moderators who are not moderators in Engines visit here and contribute their opinions. I visit other forums where I'm not a moderator. I'm a member in those forums like everyone else, but have no moderator duties there.

Good point about those magazines that loves everything that is advertised in them. That is why I only buy one model magazine and don't look at any of the others.

Personally, nothing beats the smell of burnt JP-4. I like the smell of glow and gasoline, but turbine exhaust smells the best!
