Kow -> I love the smell of glow fuel in the morning....... (11/28/2007 1:20:39 AM)

Just got done breaking in a new engine in the garage. Now, every time I walk out there, it smells like exhaust. I love it!

Does anyone else like that smell, or am I crazy?

mix a little cherry scent with the fuel

the smell of burnt exhaust is part of the reason that makes glow engines addicting, the other part is tuning a engine(such as a saito) makes you feel like you have really done something to add to the plane and flight, not just slapped something together to fly.every time i fly, the sound of a great running engine just adds to the enjoyment[;)]

Kow,
Me too.....I love that smell. I've loved it since I started flying control line back when I was in the 5th grade in North Carolina. I recently returned to this wonderful hobby/sport after 25 years. I made a test stand and bought an OS .46AX. First time I ran that engine, it was like a wave of nostalgia hit me...like getting a whiff of a perfume that just brings back feelings and memories. So I stood there in the slipstream and smelling the castor oil.
(I was running FAI fuel for break-in).

This morning we had clear blue skies, 64 degrees, and wind at 8 mph. I loaded my Kaos into the van and drove 3 miles to my flying field. It's a small town airport and I use the 1,500 ft paved taxiway as my runway. I'm the only one around here that flies RC, so I have it all to myself except for an occasional full-size plane and a few buzzards. After flying and loading things back into the van, I sat there for several minutes just thinking what a great thing this hobby is, and how lucky I am to be able to enjoy it again. I love it. I do love it so!
Regards to All,
JC

Hi.
I understand your preference. You are right.
I always feel it seeming a model airplane from the smell of fuel. There is no smell in the electric model, so I can't come to like electric planes.
I used to use the fuel with castor oil in old times. Its smell was more charming. Do you know that smell?

I also like the smell of nitro, it's much better than smoked ESC's and fried batteries.

I'd been out of the hobby for several years, and when I got back into it in the late 90's it was with electrics...

One day, I decided to check out the 'ole flying field to visit some of my old flyin' buddies from years back...
I caught a whiff of the castor exhaust of my friends 4 stroke O.S. .91 in his Corsair, and that was that [:D]

Nitro and castor..... Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

I moved to So. Cal. in 1963 as a junior in High School. I was lucky enough to
buy a '62 BSA motorcycle (sweet). I hooked up with a couple bike riders in
San Pedro where I lived....we used to go to Ascot Park on Friday nights for
the flat track motorcycle races. I didn't know it at the time, but the sweet smell
of the racing fuel was from the castor oil....even in the four strokes bikes. A few
years later after I got out of the service I started racing bikes, and used the castor.

It was the same smell....I renewed my love affair with the smell of the racing fuel.
At the same time, I got into c/l airplanes, mostly with K&B Stallion motors....same thing
....the sweet smell of castor filled my lungs once more.

Perhaps that is why to this day I run castor in my fuels....castor, castor, castor. Quite frankly
I couldn't care less about the synthetic users....they can burn that stink all they want. I will
be using plenty of castor for the remaining time I have on this Planet, with this wonderful
lifetime long hobby. [;)]

Methanol, nitromethane, and castor, baby....that's what I'm talkin' about. [:D]

Hey Dave, i used to go visit my brother who lived in Burbank back in 63 and he used to take me to ascot and smell the smoke..........WOW...i was 10 yrs old and remember the smell well[:)]

....yeah, baby....you know what I'm talkin' about. [:D]

I gotta come up and fly with you guys soon....probably after the 1st of the year. [sm=thumbup.gif]

I had a couple of BSAs, late 50s early 60s. They looked and sounded like the Motorcycle Gods intended!

In the mid-late 70's I was in high school, and during the colder months, my oil spattered down filled jacket would fill my locker with the aroma of spent glow fuel...whenever I'd open that locker door...[:D]

Now, it's the interior of my station wagon that smells like that.
Especially on a warm day, if the windows have been kept closed...I open the car door and I have flashbacks.[:D]

Anytime I smell it in the garage it puts a smile on my face. Reminds me of being at the field. Always good times when you smell plane engine exhaust.

When I rode dirt bikes in the '70s we used a type of oil called Belray in our 2-stroke MX bikes. It had a distinct smell and I loved it. One whiff instantly brought a rush of adrenalin; it was like a magic spell.

I could never picture myself going all electric. I'm also addicted to the smell of glow fuel and castor. And the noise, too.

I can just see all the lekky flyers cringing...........

"ewww, the smell of a slimer!" [:)]

I use an old house to store my planes, build, and store cases of fuel and I can tell you when I walk into that house I relax and feel soo much better. The smell of alcahol and nitro is great indeed. It is funny because I have just taken in this old house as a workshop and airplane storage structure and repainted the whole inside. It started out with no smell of RC at all just new paint. Now the smell is much better as it has the sweetest smell like perfume and just keeps getting stronger and stronger. I look forward to going there everyday after work it is a place where I can relax and not have to worry about the ole lady nagging. Sometimes the smell of epoxy and CA even smells nice when building new planes.

That reminds me of the first time I flew again with "wet" power...[:D]
I'd been used to going out flying my with just my Tx. and airplane, maybe an extra battery pack or charger...
First time back with a glow powered airplane, I forgot paper towels...and I forgot that you don't rub your eyes if your hands aren't wiped off real good...[;)] (oh yeah! oops! everything's a little blurry after that...)

Hi All,
Ain't it something how a smell can bring us back to another place and time.
When I was 11 (1955) my family moved to Union, NJ, a 10 minute bike ride from the control line field of the Union model airplane club, no steeenking synthetic back then.
A few years later, after another move I discovered the joys of being a "hangar rat" at a grass strip in Morris County, NJ (Hanover Airport) the A&P shop (not the supermarket) was overwhelming in it's mixture of gasoline fumes, oil, cleaning solvent and fresh dope from one of the re covering jobs usually going on, that and the "calendars" that showed me places I'd never seen before[X(], quite a heady mix for a 14 YO. [:)], now cue up one of the top hits from the summer of 58' and I gone[;)]
Cheers,
Pete

no better smell in the world than glow fuel. long time ago I acually got in trouble in school for that smell they thought i had chemicals or something in my locker [X(] how goofy was that poor people they don't know what they are missing. It didnt help that i would fly a c/l in the morning before school and would leave the paper towels in my jacket pocket because i love the smell.
It just does something for me now if i could just find a sweet little thang that smelled of nitro insted of perfume.....that would be to good wouldnt it oh and nagg you about not getting to go to the feld[sm=bananahead.gif] think i would go co coo over that one!!
