Just got done breaking in a new engine in the garage. Now, every time I walk out there, it smells like exhaust. I love it!

Does anyone else like that smell, or am I crazy?

the smell of burnt exhaust is part of the reason that makes glow engines addicting, the other part is tuning a engine(such as a saito) makes you feel like you have really done something to add to the plane and flight, not just slapped something together to fly.every time i fly, the sound of a great running engine just adds to the enjoyment

Kow,
Me too.....I love that smell. I've loved it since I started flying control line back when I was in the 5th grade in North Carolina. I recently returned to this wonderful hobby/sport after 25 years. I made a test stand and bought an OS .46AX. First time I ran that engine, it was like a wave of nostalgia hit me...like getting a whiff of a perfume that just brings back feelings and memories. So I stood there in the slipstream and smelling the castor oil.
(I was running FAI fuel for break-in).

This morning we had clear blue skies, 64 degrees, and wind at 8 mph. I loaded my Kaos into the van and drove 3 miles to my flying field. It's a small town airport and I use the 1,500 ft paved taxiway as my runway. I'm the only one around here that flies RC, so I have it all to myself except for an occasional full-size plane and a few buzzards. After flying and loading things back into the van, I sat there for several minutes just thinking what a great thing this hobby is, and how lucky I am to be able to enjoy it again. I love it. I do love it so!
Regards to All,
JC

Hi.
I understand your preference. You are right.
I always feel it seeming a model airplane from the smell of fuel. There is no smell in the electric model, so I can't come to like electric planes.
I used to use the fuel with castor oil in old times. Its smell was more charming. Do you know that smell?

I also like the smell of nitro, it's much better than smoked ESC's and fried batteries.

I'd been out of the hobby for several years, and when I got back into it in the late 90's it was with electrics...

One day, I decided to check out the 'ole flying field to visit some of my old flyin' buddies from years back...
I caught a whiff of the castor exhaust of my friends 4 stroke O.S. .91 in his Corsair, and that was that

I moved to So. Cal. in 1963 as a junior in High School. I was lucky enough to
buy a '62 BSA motorcycle (sweet). I hooked up with a couple bike riders in
San Pedro where I lived....we used to go to Ascot Park on Friday nights for
the flat track motorcycle races. I didn't know it at the time, but the sweet smell
of the racing fuel was from the castor oil....even in the four strokes bikes. A few
years later after I got out of the service I started racing bikes, and used the castor.

It was the same smell....I renewed my love affair with the smell of the racing fuel.
At the same time, I got into c/l airplanes, mostly with K&B Stallion motors....same thing
....the sweet smell of castor filled my lungs once more.

Perhaps that is why to this day I run castor in my fuels....castor, castor, castor. Quite frankly
I couldn't care less about the synthetic users....they can burn that stink all they want. I will
be using plenty of castor for the remaining time I have on this Planet, with this wonderful
lifetime long hobby.

Methanol, nitromethane, and castor, baby....that's what I'm talkin' about.

FBD.

I had a couple of BSAs, late 50s early 60s. They looked and sounded like the Motorcycle Gods intended!

In the mid-late 70's I was in high school, and during the colder months, my oil spattered down filled jacket would fill my locker with the aroma of spent glow fuel...whenever I'd open that locker door...

Now, it's the interior of my station wagon that smells like that.
Especially on a warm day, if the windows have been kept closed...I open the car door and I have flashbacks.

Anytime I smell it in the garage it puts a smile on my face. Reminds me of being at the field. Always good times when you smell plane engine exhaust.
