I recently purchased two stock front tires and rims for a Ducati 999r for a project I am working on. I slipped the tires on the rims (no glue) and compared to the original tire on the bike they are much softer. Is this because I do not have them glued or are they to have foam inserts in them?

Thanks for your time.

The stock tyres are too hard with little grip.Anyone that races ditches them straight away because they have so little grip. The stock tyres will probably be stiffer if you glue them to the rims.

The PMT tyres have taken over from the GRP tyres in the UK,but you need to buy inserts for them. The GRP come with inserts, but they are not as grippy as the PMT tyres.

bikeracer,

So the stock bike does not come with inserts, correct?

is it okay to just put a better tire on the rear and leave the front stock?

Nothing wrong with it,but aftermarket tyres will have more grip than the stock TT tyres.

The PMT soft tyres have more grip than the GRP ones, but the PMT require you to buy an insert because they don't supply one.
Nuova Faor do an insert that works, but it make them more expensive in total.
If you mainly run the bike where it's warm the GRP will probably be okay, but here in the UK hardly anyone uses the GRP tyres. The soft PMT 200 rear tyre either slick or treaded will still enable a bike to pull wheelies on a wet track in the rain.

If the front tyre has little grip it easily washes out in corners,so the choice is yours really.
