Anybody know where I can find good glow plugs to fit my Testors/McCoy 049? I have one I recently purchased and I just love it but don't know where to get spares. Tried Cox heads but no dice. Cool little engine.

Ebay may be the best bet, I have seen them on there being offered.

I would suggest getting into the Cox Surestarts, as you can get the new engine ready to go for around $7 plus shipping.

Keep the testors as a vintage wonder, and fly the Cox, you will be happy with the choice.

I bought some conversion heads a while back on Ebay. I seen some conversion heads for these engines some place through a hobby shop on line but I don't remember where it was. I do know that you can't buy the heads any more unless you find them on ebay or some place like that.

I dunno, $18.00 delivered ? And doesn't even include a plug. .......I know a good machinist. Heck I might even try it myself.

a good machinist would charge more than 18 bux just to make one, now if he could pump out maybe say 50 of em then that 18 dollar thing may be beat, 18 bux is cheap if you only need one. OF course, if he is a good friend he may just spend the couple hrs of his own time and make ya one on the side. Most shops charge around 50-75 dollars an hr so getting the local shop to make ya one would be kinda pricey, cause I can see at least an hr of labor in that thing including the setup. Makes better sense to just buy the 18 dollar one. (Mass produced on a screw machine)

Mikey is my bud and he would probably consider it a fun 15 minute project. This guy is amazing, even has his own brand new CNC mill in his garage. I am so jealous, I'd hate him if he wasn't the nicest guy in the world.

For the sake of helping out you guys and to keep a sweet smaller sport engine running I'll drill and tap them for you. Send me a blown head or two and a buck to cover return postage and I'll do them for you.

I'm another Wenmac/McCoy/Testors fan. For an engine that is all but switch like in how it starts thanks to the clutched spring starter you just cannot beat it. I'm planning on putting mine into a Dakota if I ever get around to building it.

If you want to try it yourself you'll need to find a 1/4-32 tap. These are NOT standard. But I've got a set of the three types from years back.

As soon as mine gives up I will take you up on it. Don't know when that'll happen though. I don't get to run it much, right now it's freezing rain outside.

I can try but I think you're going to find that the size of the glow element hole in the standard short reach plug will result in too much lost compression. The Cox 020 heads use a very small volume where the element sits.

I'd also have to see if there's even enough meat on the head to take the plug threading. Let me check and I'll get back to you.

I suppose a turbo plug would never do... I bet there isin't enough meat. Nor for a Nelson plug. I could be wrong.

For an .020 you'll be lucky if there's enough room for a 1/4 -32. None of those others will fit.
