i was about to ask the same question.....and my initial reaction wasnt 'WOW' it was '****!!!'

i was running my durga at the carpark, nothing unusual, when suddenly i heard kind of a high pitch squeal from the back diff when i throttle it. car doesnt push forward a lot...it moves, but a little.

my initial thoughts were either the spur gear teeth were stripped (hence the high pitch squeal), or the belt somehow came loose at the rear diff (hence the loss in power).

came home, dismantled the drivetrain, expecting an easy job. haha fat hope. found the rear diff in that state. the front is a one way, and its not affected. both pics are of the rear diff.

my diff plates are UNSCORED. good as new. so that rules out me tightening the diff too tight....and rules out normal wear and tear. last time i checked, turning one of the rear wheels will result in the other going the other way (hence it wasnt too loose either). ball diffs were greased very generously, and from the pictures, there's still leftover grease.

ball diffs were intact, none shattered.

im running a MM5700, Hyperion 16C 5350 Lipos.

im not sure exactly what happened, but i suspect me drifting and sliding a lot in the car park had something to do with it.

whadaya all think? lol.

even my trashed dark impact still has the diffs intact.

Hi nauticar, wow sorry to see what it happened, did you checked whether the diff plates are loose? ...the metal plates(#BG8) that we are to ca glue onto the black plastic diff plate holder (#A7) ?

heh dont be sorry - i hope nothing of this happens to any of you guys who own a ball diff car!

didnt think of checking the diff plates whether they were loose - checking them now - ok out of the two plates, one is already detached from the diff holder, while the other is intact.

it could be because of that, but im trying to visualise here - if the diff plate loosened up, i would have immediately lost differential power at one side. however the symptoms i experienced was that both sides had power loss.

also, i re-checked the diff pulley, and both sides were 'melted'.

my theory :The ball bearings wore down to the point that the diff plates were rubbing against the diff pulley. any other ideas, anyone?

im expecting Tamiya ceramic balls and a new diff pulley anytime now.... ill go measure the balls with my eye once i get my hands on them (sheesh that sounded weird)

Yep. Loose diff. My xxx-nt melted like 5 of them justy like yours. Losi redesigned it on the nt2. It just loosened itself. I put it back together last time with metal diff gear and red locktite. I've been scared to run it though. It's been like 2 years now sitting on the shelf.lol
If you have the feel then tighten it with red locktite. Diffs aren't that expensive but the fustration of having them come loose and melt sucks.

Is it ok to threadlock the the difffential screw in (black hex head screw) just to prevent it from coming loose?

I cant recall offhand whether the 2mm nut has the nylon lock portion .... but in any case as you know the purpose of me threadlocking the screw is to prevent it from coming loose... and originally i DID tighten the diffs very tightly, but it still loosens itself.

The only downside is that it might be a bit more difficult for me to unscrew it if i see the need to dismantle the differentials lol!

Hi nauticar, Yes. the 2mm nut has nylon part in which the BG4 screw connects. me too also experiencing the same thing, tightening the diffs very tightly, then it still loosens itself.

Staying with brushed motors, using dirt tuned now..
