Default Cars for three boys

So my 8year old asked me for a remote control car that can go off road. So I thought, why not get one for his little brother(7yr) they would make great Christmas gifts. Then I thought why not just pick up a third one, I want in on this action too! So I headed off to the local toy store... nothing there seemed worth it. So here I am.

As far as use goes... wooded lot off a dirt road. so mostly in the woods. we might race around the driveway but realistically we will mostly just cruise around the lot. So Off-Road is a must.

I was thinking something fairly inexpensive like the Evader for the little ones. Will this car work well enough off road? Is it too fast for off road? Should I look for something with more ground clearance like a monster truck?

I was also thinking we should get three of the same thing... just incase I need to use mine for spare parts.

Ok... thanks for listening to my rambling.

Rick

Do you think that a smallish hands would be able to hold the controller for this car ok?

Those are very good cars. Also check out the E-Firestorm by HPI Racing.

If you can, get your rc's from a hobby shop.

THese are all good begineer cars. I would go to your LHS with this list and talk to the owner and see what parts they stock. IF you cant get parts quick it sucks.

Totally agree, also, ask if your LHS will "price match" parts off the net, saves you the hassle of constantly being bugged as to when the "car comes", don't foregt a MINIMUM of 2 batteries, so when one is charging, the other one is being used, best is 3, one is charging, one is "chillin" and one is being used

Thanks for the input. Unfortunatly we are kinda lucky to have a local grocery store. Asking for a local hobby shop would really be pushing it.

I will take a look at these cars when I get home.

Can I run three charges off of one power supply or do I need a power supply for each charger?

It depends on how many amps your power supply can handle
Do you have a link to what powersupply you have in mind?

For the type of terrain you are describing, I'd opt for the Traxxas Stampede over the others being suggested as it provides additional ground clearance (definite asset when in a wooded lot with small rocks, roots, twigs, etc)

id say stampede as well, good all around truck for kids and adult that like to bash. you asked about their small hands having problems with the controler, well my 5year old girl has some trouble going from fwd to reverse, buy id imagine that your boys would do just fine. if they can use a xbox360 controler, then they can handle any rc transmitter.

an idea for you, if you do get three of the same, buy a body for each. proline makes a hummer body. sometimes you can find already painted lightly used bodies on ebay. its fun to personalize the truck.
i added a diamond plate sticker and toy gas can to the bed of my stampede hummer body.

I have a charger and power supply (PC) from my park flyers. We only rarely use them since we moved.

I have some deans kicking around that I could use for the batteries.

Thanks for all the suggestions I am going to take a closer look at the stampede.

I too have to agree...stampede..It was my first hobby grade rc back when I was 5 or 6...Very durable and surprisingly fast for an rtr..Definitely in the top 5 for best electric rtr rc vehicle ever.

there are also some pretty cool minis (1/18 scale instead of 1/10) such as:

Associated RC18MT, Team Losi MLST2, and Duratrax Vendetta ST.

These are all four wheel drive, but won't have the ground clearence of the stampede. Minis are also cheaper to hop up. The Duratrax Vendetta's also come with a one year parts breakage warranty which is awsome

on a wooded lot i would look for something with 4 wheel drive and decent ground clearance... Take a look at the wheely king.... you can add weights to the front tires to keep it from wheelying too much if you want... but i know as a kid i would have loved to have something that can wheely at will It does cost a little more, but looks way cooler, and you can stretch the wheelbase to use 1/10 bodies for pretty cheap....

if you haven't bought anything yet, check out a mattracks at radio shack. they can run around 15 mph, but have mattracks tracks for extreme climbing. they will offer more time per battery, than track speed trucks. headlights offer night fun too

Good point, but i think that 3 4WD cars will be more maintence and more chance of breakage than 3 2WD cars...

I looked at the wheelie king. The idea of having something that can convert into a crawler has already crossed my mine. We do have a 1:1 Jeep that we use all the time for off-roading. We might just need to only get two rigs... but spend a little more.

Thanks for all the great info and suggestions on cars. I was just about to order up two stampedes from Tower when it dawned on me that the ground is completely covered with snow. This week dropped about a foot on us yeah... ( I work in a ski shop). But this wont leave much room for the boys to run them outside until the snow melts come spring. So .... two questions have come up before I order them.

1) are these trucks too big/fast to use inside the house?

2) If run in the snow will there be trouble with the electronics?

Based on the answers... I may need to look into something that can be run indoors... maybe inside a garage.

Thanks for all the help!

Many people waterproof the electronics so that they can drive in. Snow. The stampede is definately too fast for inside. 30MPH is about 44 feet per second.
