Alot of the trouble rc shops are having now has to do with how cheaply the products are available online. Some tracks run independently from a shop but alot are connected, meaning a shop doesnt make it then the track doesnt either.

I had never thought of the rtr thing getting people out of racing because of how poorly they would place, but its a valid point, when I first started I was so bad i dont think running a truck without batteries would have hurt my posisition.

since when does rtr mean ready to race?
where did you get that?

rtr means ready to run
meaning you can take it out of the box and drive it with very little preparation
i don't think there is a single vehicle made that can come out of the box and be ready to race

The main reason people are buying ready to run is not because kits are not available. The number of affordable kits available isn't very good. Tamiya probably makes the most affordable kits especially since many of the entry level ones include a motor and esc. But when a newb adds up the cost of most kits then adds radio gear ESC and such the cost is often preventative for them. Look at the TC4. The RTR is about 225-250. The regular Team kit was about 180 or so(cant' remember its discontinued now). Add the 180+radio gear $50 or more + esc 30 or more + motor $25 or more. Just getting cheaper stuff your almost $100 more than the RTR. Yes I know the team kit had some different parts but the extra money is what the newb sees. Many newbs don't get the advantage of better radio gear or simply don't need some of those advantages. Also, in my area the hobby shops don't support kits very much or racing for that matter. The closest hobby shot to me has exactly 3 kits in stock. 1 tamiya hornet, 1 HPI MT2 SS and an RS4 18SS. In my immediate area there is only one place to race and thats on road outdoors in the summer. I have to travel a couple of hours to race anything else.
Honestly I dont really see any true RACE ready RTR's out there. Atleast not compared to the quality of race kits. They say race ready just cause it sounds good to people. Its a marketing thing with absolutely nothing to do with how good the car is compared to its kit counterparts. Look at Traxxas. I think all of there boxes say RTR ready-to-race. But how many people seriously race traxxas(especially cars). Most serious racers would choose AE, losi, etc.

Since TRaxxas wanted a more colorful term, that's when.

rtrs get more people into the hobby. i think most people with rtrs still work on them themselves. those people who were in the shop that day are the type who spoiled their kids, dont know anything about rc and whos kids would never put forth the effort to fix them by themselves.
rtrs are nice in that you dont have to learn everything about rc before you start having fun. with kits you need to know about all the components, what to buy to complete the kit and so on.

think of this

porsche is a sports car maker

the profit they make by selling an SUV (cayenne) allows extra profit that they can use to make better sportscars

if RC companies make more money, then they can make better products for us to buy

Ty, you really have to consider the fact that everyone who is into this hobby doesn't necessarily care about the racing or competition aspect of it. Some people, like myself, just enjoy wrenching around with the cars and bashing em around solo. Personally, If someone is even remotely near me with their car, i leave and go somewhere else.

also
I own four cars. Two RTRs/Two Kits. I would have never bought the kits if i wasn't introduced to the rtr packages beforehand. I learned how to work on these cars by hopping up my RTRs

i've been in this hobby for 11 ouyt of my 16 years, and every single one of my cars, trucks, tuggies buggies, helicopters, planes, everything have all be RTR or RTF (ready to fly), i like being able to take it out of the box and drive it, and once i drive it i upgrade what i think needs it, i can take my revos apart blind with one hand, and my 8ight T and LST2 aren't far behind, just my opinion but i like RTR's.

some people dont have time to builda kit, instal everything, and then set it up properly, plus they're paying say $400 for something that has everything, while a kit is that price without anything. I also like kits, but its hard to get everything you want out of it for the same price of a RTR

I think everyone needs to differentiate between 2 issues.

Bashing and racing.

Bashing / newbies - RTR's are brilliant and guys can get a feel for the hobby and take it from there. They are also forced to ask "why did my butt get kicked so badly?" if they do race and then learn about gearing etc. by asking other guys.

Racers - I reckon that the marketing teams need to be reigned in a bit. Seems to be happening in all industries. It seems like what deems as false advertising has been slackened off and marketing hoo-haa reigns supreme.

Guys should read forums like this and suss it out first. I love kits 'cause I love building things. Others hate the idea.

my 2 cents.

Long live the R/C car in kit form. A great example is the 1/8 scale monster truck arena...HPI I think is the only company that offers a kit form of a 1/8 monster truck. The point I want to make is you can build a one of a kind car better than the thousandth car from an assembly line tech. To me (my opinion) it is about the quality of the build rather than the number of kits produced.

Well said, any rtr I buy gets torn down and reassembled anyway so I'd rather get it in kit form right from the start like they were years back when I got into the hobby. Just a matter of preference I guess.....

considering that people these days are more lazy and ignorant than ever, I am not surprised at the amount of RTRs that are available. I try not to think about how RTR has taken over the hobby, it just gets me p'd off. The main problem i have is that it doesn't really help out hobby stores. All it does is cause them to only stock RTR stuff. Why would i ever go to a store that only sells stuff for RTRs.
