Wow, that's a lot of work! I was hoping that a conversion to brushless would be a lot less painful... and not so expensive.

This kind of thing sure does make this hobby a LOT more fun, though.

Best of luck, can't wait to hear how things turned out for you.

Cheers.

Here is a video where I go over some of the details on the 2S BL conversion for the 5#10.
Here are the specs:
AEO drop in kit for 7.4V systems running 180 sized brushed motors
2 - C10 outrunners - 2900KV
2 - AEO 5A ESC's
2 - AEO BL convertors
1 - Walkera RX2403 4in1 unit
1 - Esky Lama battery cage with unbreakable skids
1 - Xtreme Lama style custom painted canopy

With a 900Mah battery the ready to fly weight is 219 grams. Flight times are 12 to 15 minutes.
Hope you enjoy. Sorry for the poor video quality, I don't have a camcorder and digital camera can only do so good strapped to a hat.

Ryan,

Thanks for the tour of your house... just kidding. Nice job maneuvering the tight spaces and thanks for showing a full range of control. You have convinced me that I do want to go through with the brushless upgrade, I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for my next paycheck to purchase batteries, etc.

I took my heli outdoors to give it a try on a calm day. Unfortunately the skids got caught in some grass and pulled the heli down under power, so I now have a slightly stripped main gear. At least it's still flyable until the replacement gear arrives.

Yeah, it's a pretty tough heli. I once drop mine straight down from about 30 feet when I clipped a tree branch. It suffered a broken blade and a bent to hell frame that I bent back and I am still using it.

Fly on!

got a question, what should i do if all trims are centered and it hovers fine except that the nose turns left. at a medium pace, then if i click the trim over 1 notch it starts going to the right at the same rate as it was going left, so i can seem to get this thing centered should i mess with the gyro sensitiy? if so whcih way do i turn it?

Power on with rudder trim centered. If the nose turns right, then turn the sens pot CCW, if nose turns left then turn CW. Use very small increments. It can take a few tries to find the sweet spot on the gyro pot, because the 4in1 units were not designed to be used with BL motors, which have more torque and require the gyro mixer to be set perfect for a no trim flight.

If mixer sensitivity doesn't fix it then maybe you have a slight binding issue somewhere. Like a gear meshing too tight, shaft bearing starting to go bad, etc.

Hope that helps.

Ryan

alright next question, has anyone been able to find a set of gears that are better than the stock ones? would something like this fit or work? www.helidirect.com/xtreme-gear-for-inner-shaft-for-esky-coaxial-p-13211.hdx

No other gears will work. Walkera had to make this gear with larger diameter and more teeth just to get the heli to tun on the 3.7V system with 130 motors. The teeth isn't the big issue as it could be matched with a smaller toothed pinion, but the diameter of the gear will be unique to the 5#10.

I just replaced my walkera 5#10 with a 2 x RAIDEN 3.7V 1200mAh 18C Li-Polymer Battery.

I am now back up flying, must of had two bad 3.7V 1000mAh Li-Polymer Battery. Great to be flying again and great price $6.10/ each at
RC711 and fast service too!

ok me again, got a problem, i removed the motor wires, and forgot which way they came stock.
i looked at the manual and it says low motor on the top connector and upper motor on the bottom connect on the 4in1 now when i do that it cant fly for crap.
now when i put the upper motor on the lower motor connection and lower motor on the upper connection it works is that right?

Yes, the "lower motor" is the motor that turns the lower set of blades, and the "upper motor" is the motor that turns the upper blades. Its especially confusing because the physical locations of the motors would make it seem like it should go the other way around.

I gotta say, I finally finished the BL upgrade with the AEORC kit (purchased from Terence at CJ), and I am thoroughly impressed. The increased weight and power make the 5#10 fly very different, but it feels like a rocketship now! I took it outside for some test flying, and I love the new sound it makes (it whistles instead of humming now). I haven't calculated flight time yet or checked my AUW, but hopefully tomorrow the charger I bought off Crushalot is waiting for me at work and I can fully recharge the batteries and do some real flying...

Looks like Wow has released a nice BL kit for the 5#10 that upgrades to 2S, but has a voltage step down so that you can run the 2S setup on the stock 4n1. Looks nice:

Does anyone have a homepage for Turbo Ace. I did a bit of hunting and came up with this, http://turboace2000.1freecart.com/
but it looks like part of WOW hobbies. I would like to find a "Stand alone" site for Turbo Ace, if I could find it.

Is Turbo Ace a Walkera product?

I think it is cool that Turbo Ace put in a BEC to allow the use of the 2401/2410/2411 4.2V 1S 4in1. Personally, I think Crush had the better approach, which was to use a Walkera 2403 2S 4in1, but this adds about $40 extra. For those of you trying to keep conversion expense under control, the BEC is a welcome addition.

Hi Guys

I'm new to the board and to RC Heli's.  I just received my 5#10 this morning from Helipal and after the third flight and a new battery the throttle and yaw would not work.  They were fine at the end of the last flight which ended due to a low battery and not a crash.  After charging up I put a fresh battery in and the right stick was fine but the left stick was dead.  Any ideas.  I have a feeling its the ESC and the 4-1 board needs to be replaced but I am new to this game so I am just guessing.  Sent Helipal an email asking for assistance but have not received a response yet.  I have been reading that there have been some issues with these boards.  Anyone have any thoughts on my problem.

Regards
John

I just got my 5#10 today as well. I got mine from wowhobbies.com I already ordered 1 off ebay but from china. When i read in these forms that they test every heli before shipping i knew that's the way to go. I'll use the china one for parts.

My Problem
My first flight was awesome! Took off, it drifted toward the big screen and i killed it. It was not more than 12inches off the ground so not even a hard landing. Perfect!

I did that about 3 times to discharge the battery a bit. I don't have a discharger, but i was less than 1/4 throttle so i figured that's well below the 10c discharge rate. After about 3min of prop turning i put it on the charger for 30min.

My next two flights were the same as the first. Everything is wonderfully stable and i'm very excited the heli is so easy to fly.

My 3rd take off wasn't so great, it crashed into me (power off by the time it reached me) and the bottom set of blades hit my hand. Not even hard enough to sting.

Now when i power up the first 1/8 of throttle everything seems fine, when i hit the point it used to take off, the top blades stop rotating. If i give it rudder >>> Right the blades start up and spin extremely fast. If its on rudder center the top blades stop moving. If its left of center they still wont move. Rudder Trim is set to center.

Just for clarification all my "crashes" were me sitting it down because i was loosing control. It hasn't crashed into anything yet. And its always landed on its skids.

Just an update from my previous post.  I received a replacement board from Helipal in the mail two days ago and that solved the rudder problem.  I now have a fully functional 5#10.  After installing it I did all the preflight checks and everything checked out OK.  I spooled her up slowly and she just hummed along.  When I got to that magic RPM number she lifted off with all the grace and beauty you would expect from such a precision machine.  Hovering was perfect.  Manuevering her was so easy and responsive,  it was really effortless.  Needless to say I am thoroughly impressed as she not only looks good but she performs great as well.  In my stable of 4 heli's, I think this heli is going to end up being my favourite.  Walkera did an excellent job in designing this helicopter and I congratulate them on a first rate piece of engineering.

Just wanted post some pics of how I converted my 5#10 to a 2S setup with out having to get the RX2403 receiver.
With my new 2S setup, I'm using the Extreme 180 motors for the V3/V4 Lama.

Here's what I did:

1. Like many people here (5#10 forum), I also got to the stage where my helicopter would only fly 2 feet off the ground
on a full charge (3.7, 1000mah, 1s). That's when I tried using my 7.4, 1000mah on the 5#10.
I noticed that with 7.4v, I managed to get her flying again. However, there were major problems.
The motors overheated and it also caused my battery to swell. A few flights on, I knew I was gonna fry the rx.
And I did.

2. So went hunting at this forum for a solution. Was I going to go brushless?

3. I ended up fixing the receiver. I saw someone in youtube who changed out the mosfets on a DF4 rx.
So I took out the burnt FDS6670 mosfets and tapped the Gate-Source-Drain lines
from the board. I wanted to make an external circuit board that would house just the mosfets.
I have fabricated a pcb which uses 6 IRF 520 mosfets. 3 in parallel for each motor.
Grainy pics are attached.

She now flies way heaps better than stock.

Let me know if anyone wants more details.

Cheers
