You'll want to change your crystals to another channel on one of the helis. Otherwise, the radios will control both helis together.
Right now, you're both on channel 50. You should probably go to channel 35. It gets you far enough away from 50, but keeps you on the high side of the band where your radio equipment is tuned (optimized).
If you're interested in the math for converting the frequency to the channel number, here it is using your frequency:

72.790 is changed to 79 (drop the 72. and the end 0)
79 - 21 = 58
58/2 = 29
29 + 21 = 50
Channel 50

Channel 35 is frequency 72.490
35 - 21 = 14
14 x 2 = 28
28 + 21 = 49
Frequency 72.490

Thanks for the prompt reply! I noticed that ka-planes has HM-5#10-Z-30 Crystal Oscilator online, but would that be the default channel? Can you just specify what frequency crystal you want when ordering? I am awaiting a gear set from ka-planes now, perhaps another parts purchase is in order!

**Update - ka-planes states they have 72.870 in stock. Would that be far enough away from the 72.790 that I have now?

In theory, none of the channels should interfere with the others, but it just doesn't seem to work that way all the time in reality. 72.870 is channel 54. Tell the dealer your situation and let him advise you and take responsibility for his advice.

Just a thought to extend flight time. Has anyone tried using two 5#10 batteries (1000mAh 3.7v) in parallel, using a JST "Y" connector? The 5#10 can handle the minimal added weight, but I'm worried that the 10-12 minute flight time may be too much and overheat the motors. Would there be any "battery balancing" isues. I wouldn't think so, as they are not in "series" like a 2S lipo. I'm interested if anyone has tried this ??

Hi Ted,
The heli can handle the weight, but there are some things to consider.
It will still weigh more, so you're flight times probably won't double. This is just an assumption. You'd have to try it to be sure.
You'll have to find a way to mount the extra battery. Since you'll already have 2 batteries and can change them fast when one gets low, you'd probably want to make your new mounting solution fast to hook up. In other words, if it takes you 2 minutes to install the dual battery set, and only 15 seconds to change batteries, you haven't gained anything. Longer flight times might also create extra heat in the motors and slow down performance (another assumption).
There's only one way to tell for sure if you'd gain anything, and that's to try it. If you do, don't forget to report back here and tell us what happened.

The new crystals at 72.790 seem to work perfect in tandem with my nieghbors default channel setup. We fly right next to each other and laugh about the nightmare of an in-flight collision, and what it would take to recover (cost, parts, etc.).

So, although certainly in no professional manner, or even much more than a beginner/enthusiast standpoint, two 5#10's flying within feet (and more scarily, inches) can be done. It's a real treat to fly with another enthusist. So far, no cotrol tower needed. And with 4 batteries each, we can fly a set, have a cold one, and continue on.

Another noob question; I hear the talk and desire for the 2.4MHz version. Could someone shed light onto the the differences it makes? Is it more range, more tactile feel? I just don't know. While quite happy with my range of my yard and about 20 feet in elevation, I can't see how it could be better.

Thanks again for all of the information. I will continue to watch and try my best to participate in this thread.

2.4 has some advantages, but most don't apply to these helis. Range, maybe, but these are small and the range is farther than you can see anyway. Maybe faster response, but you need fast servos to compliment the speed I think. The only real advantage would be that the Tx is bound to the Rx, and (at least within reason) you never have to worry about controlling someone elses heli. In a croweded field, it's an advantage when you don't have to check everyone's channel numbers.

The big 2.4GHz advantage to me was the significantly smaller antenna size and promise of "glitch-free", since I fly all my helis in the "hobby room" which is 17 X 13 feet, and filled with a large screen TV, model trains and lots of other stuff. Also, since I have mulitple Walkera helis using the 2.4 system, and they "code match" on power-on, so, I don't not need to keep multiple Tx charged up. So far so good on the 2.4 GHz 5#10 and 4#3B......I was a bit concerned 'cause of all the other stuff in the house using 2.4 (cordless phones, wireless CCD transmitters, AV transmitters for the satellite TV; etc, so far no problems.....

While waiting for my 2.4 GHz 5#10, I did make my own whip antenna for the Walkera FM transmitter units; I used a phone to RCA metal plug from Radioshack, tapped a 4MM thread on the phone side, soldered the end for 40 inches of solid core #22 wire, then wrapped it around plastic tube, which neatly fit over the RCA end; Cut the tube, put a thread protecter [rubber cap] over the tip to hold the wire in place and put shrink wrap over it....looked and worked great; Now, 5#10 with 2.4GHz, 400 series super skids and several batteries....whoo hoo....life is good

P.S. I also see that Walkera is going to release a NEW version of the micro co-ax, the 5G6-1 with CNC metal head and 2.4 GHz in July, about the size of a 4#3B....now listed on their site www.walkera.com ...can't wait.....

P.S.S. Does Super-skids have an intermediate size set of skids that will fit the 5#10 ??? Not complaining here, as the 400's work great and fit perfectly to the frame (I also cut about one inch of skid from the rear). But, they do look a bit oversize, copared to OEM...

OK... Total Noob here. My 5#10 is on order, as well as the superskids 400, and some xtreme hard blades, and an extra battery.

I may be jumping the gun here but is there a "drop in" battery upgrade for these birds?

I may be new but I'm not shy with doing my own work on my bird (I've maintained many motorcycles and done all the work on them except for replacing wheels and tires, I don't have the balancing equipment in my garage and frankly my life is too important to ride a motorcycle with unbalanced wheels).

So don't be shy about telling me I have to mod something, but understand I might not understand what you are talking about so you'll have to explain to me what a 4into1 is (a gyro, a radio, something else?).

Anyways... is there a drop in battery upgrade? Can one just use a 7.4v from a Lama?

Nice meeting you guys & gals, I have to say it was this thread that helped me make a decision that the 5#10 should be my first heli!

Tell me about "upgrade blades" for 5#10. What is verdict ?? I have only broken one blade so far, and I can get 5-pak of ESKY "A" & "B" blades at ka-planes.com for 5 bucks per pack.....

The E-Sky blades will work, and are maybe even more breakable than the Walkera - they seem to hold up better on the 5#10 than on the Lamas, due to more separation distance between upper & lower blades make them less prone to demolition by blade strikes.

NEVERTHELESS, the Xtreme blades work well - I use them, but only on a couple of helis where I wanted to dye them to match the frame color.

Keep in mind that the price is for a complete set of upper AND lower blades, AND shipping is FREE. These are durable, and would be a bargain even at $10 per set.
