I'm having tons of fun with this bird but it's also a money pit, mostly due to the fact that I'm a wreckless flyer.

My balance bar is bent and she vibrates a lot now, I've got replacements on order. If you want to see this thing fly fast (really fast) then take the weights off the balance bar, it isn't uncontrollable but it is really responsive. I've put the weights back on because I'm not smooth enough with the controls to deal with how fast it moves when the weights are off, but if you are an experienced pilot you should give it a go, its a blast.

BTW the 180 motor heat sinks fit and do a good job of cooling the motors. You can get 2 heat sinks on the front motor but I think you can only fit one on the rear motor.

So far I've broken:
1 canopy
1 set of blades
1 rotor gear (chewed up when motor backed out, make sure your motors are screwed in nice and tight)
1 balance bar (bent, but not totally wasted)
1 stock skids (replaced with super skids)
1 rear prop blade (I'm just going to remove it, though I have a replacement on order).

I fly like a mad man and I lack patience, but I'm learning that I need it because most of my crashes have been avoidable.

After reading this and other threads I will consider dropping in a lama "4 in 1" and battery to reap the rewards of the lama's better gyro. Not that I have a problem with my stock 4-in-1 but I'm using this heli as a stepping stone to a single rotor FP and I want to get used to messing with the electronics too.

All in all this is a great heli to learn on and a decent platform to modify.

I do have an issue, which is likely due to one of my gears being a little warn, that is when I spin the heli in one direction it goes up... when I spin it in the opposite direction it goes down. If the replacing the gear doesn't resolve the issue I'll have to look at adjusting whatever settings the 4-in-1 allows me to adjust (it may only be gyro gain). Either way if anyone has some words of wisdom for what is happening and how to resolve it... help a brother out.

Could you please point to a source and part number for the 5#10 heat sinks. You said they were "180" size ???

I f/u on your recommendation for the Exceed LG from XHeli. They had free shipping yesterday....waa hooo !!!

The heat sinks are the xtreme 180 heat sinks for the lama's and blade cx's as seen here:

I just picked mine up at a local hobby shop as the ones local to me all carry e-flight stuff. They cost me about $3.50 each.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem I have. I had not too minor crash a few weeks ago. 8 ft drop and damaged the main gears. Already had them replaced. However, after the repair, my 5-10 will no longer fly higher than 1 ft off the ground.
I'm not sure if the problem is with the receiver (3in1, Im using the 2.6 GHZ) or the motors. However my supplier says it must be the motors as he has had no complaints regarding the receiver. Ive also made sure that the pinions and gears are neither tight nor loose.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Motors? Maybe

Does the heli rise straight up, or spin?

Normally, motor sets don't wear / burn out at the same rate so as to allow rise straight up at throttle up.

Bent Inner shaft?

Gears not tightened down onto shaft flats, allowing slippage & loss of power.

Ozzie air to thin to support aerodynamic lift?

Damaged battery in crash so it does not charge to capacity?

Get a spare battery & set of motors. Try the new battery first, then change out the motors next.

IMO, it just sounds like you're not getting enough power to to throttle up enough to fly...

I agree with that approach....

I doubt you had damage to both motors from the crash. If one was bad, then it would spin....out of control.

The problem seem to affect both motors equally... I would try a new battery first. If no improvement, look for other issues that affect performance of both motors.

Do the motors get real hot after a shot time of flight ? If the concentric rotor shafts are bent, even slightly - then the internal friction will limit RPMs. This could burn out your motors real quick, as they will draw more current and overheat. It does not take much friction to really limit performance.

Ok, I've replaced my gears and... well I still have this one issue:

when I spin the heli in one direction it goes up... when I spin it in the opposite direction it goes down. One of the rotors clearly begins to spin slower when I do this (unfortunately I forgot which one as my computer is near but the heli is not). This leads me to think that one of the motors is screwey. I just don't understand why this would only happen when using the yaw control. Actually it does loose altitude when I try to fly it forward sometimes too.

Any ideas?

I tried all 3 of my batteries and even at full charge, I'm still unable to fly the thing any higher than 1 ft off the ground. I reckon it really is the motor(s).
I have already placed an order for the motors and will update you guys on the progress.

Hello again.

I received my new motors yesterday and hurried home to fit them. Unfortunately, I found out the the problem all along was not
the motors but the 4-1. I must have busted the upper motor controller during the crash. It was working intermittently yesterday
after the install, then it just deteriorated until it was no longer giving power to the motor(Upper).

I reckon, the reason why the heli wont go any higher than 1 ft off the ground was because I was not getting enough lift due to
the very minimal power being supplied by the 4-1 to the motors.

Anyway, my 5-10 is grounded at the moment because my supplier does not have the receiver in stock.

Would any one know if the HM5G4Q3 2.4Ghz Receiver (PN HM-5G4Q3-Z-22 Receiver (RX-2411)) would work on the HM5-10?

The 5#10 uses the 2401 rx. I wouldn't try anything but an OEM replacement. I would recommend you buy another 5#10, and use it for parts. The cost to build a 5#10, strictly from individual parts is about $350 USD, so buying a scond unit is a far cheaper way to go. IMHO, you will probably use virtually all of it .......eventually. The only "spare parts" I would have on hand are the blades, extra batteries, maybe a vertical skid and a canopy or two. I have done 25 or so flights in the past few days, and the only parts I broke are the OEM landing gear, which I quickly replaced witth the SuperSkids 400. I am waiting for the Exceed Blazing Star skids to arrive, as recommended by another post.... Good Luck and Happy Flying. Ted

I just received my 5#10 a week ago,and I must say after owning several e-sky heli,there is no comparrison!
Although the 5#10 is fairly stable for the first 60 seconds of flight on a 90 minute charge,it rapidly deteriorates, needing constant trimming while in flight! which only lasts a mere 3 minutes tops!

Compared to the Lama v3 and v4 both of which I have flown alot,and that were almost half the cost,I must say the E-sky Lama 3 and v4 blows this bird away IMO.

What I would like to know is there a battery upgrade for the 5#10 so I can get more than 3 min flight time?

I have never had a full charge give me less that 6-7 minutes of flight time. Perhaps a bad battery or charger? Having 4 batteries, I cannot comment on charge time, as I always have two ready. I think that would be needed for any bird. You did not mention the charge time and corresponding flight time for your Lama v3 and v4's, so it is impossible to see the "difference" as you do. Please elaborate for us all how it "blows away" the 5#10. Performance? Flight time? as an enthusiast, I would like to know.

Shy of grinding a few gears and blades, mine flies stable and fit throughout. Yes, you have to trim due to power drop, but, what electric heli doesn't? I do not find it a problem as much as part of mastering it's flight characteristics. I take pride in the fact that even with the power dwindling, I can still make a spot on landing!
