Ok, I get it. I have searched the web for how to make sails. Still, I dont know what material to use for a RG65. Cloth, Mylar? If so where do I get it? I have been building planes for years and this whole sail thing seems to be a black art. Why the secrets.

thanx...

I don't know how to make sails, but I know there's a supplier for material online (a reputable company)...

www.midwestmodelyachting.com

On their main menu, scroll down to 'Sailmaking Supplies' and I think you'll find what you're looking for.

Good luck.

Andy

With the RG65 you will probably be able to get away with buying a sheet of plastic gift-wrap film (non-aluminised) or florists wrap which are both similar in characteristics to 35 micron Mylar. The only disadvantage is that cut edges tend to tear. You can prevent it by using a fine pointed soldering iron to cut it or reinforcing the edges with a strip of regular Scotch tape (it stays stuck well, even when wet). Lightweight "Icarus" fabric from kite suppliers is also good but a suit of sails made from it would probably cost more than the boat.
The mylar is usually available from specialist stationers and you'd need 35 micron thickness, which is 0.001377 inches.
Btw, you'll have a long journey to get into a regatta with other boats of the class

Btw, there've been some developments in the RG65 in the USA. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RG65SailboatsUS/
