Joe, yes I routed the lines out the side to make sure I cleared the pipes.

Okay guys. I know some of you wanted to see some comparison pics with the QQ Yak. I also thre in little brother, the 88" EF Yak 54. So I got off work early, and it was so nice outside. So I shoveled some snow out of the way [sm=tongue_smile.gif], and took some pics.

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/22/2007 1:46:20 PM)

Here are some pics of the 110" assembled for the first time! (the word is BIG!)

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/22/2007 2:06:37 PM)

Okay, moving along.........

I finished up the cowl baffle and cowl mounting. The Baffle plate is a little thin for my liking. (Sorry Chris). Like the 88" Yak I reinforced the baffle with some fiberglass cloth and thinned epoxy. on my 88" Yak the plastic baffle started cracking because of the air pushing on it.

First I determined which louvers I wanted to cut-out. Then I cut a piece of FG cloth and made sure that I covered the cut-out area. Masked off and shot some 3M spray adhesive, and tacked down the cloth. Then with some 15 min epoxy, thinned a little with some rubbing alcohol, and lightly brushed it on. I would of used light-weight FG cloth, but I used what I had on hand. After the whole mess cured, I cut out the intake holes, cut-sanded-epoxied the baffle plate in the cowl. I finished off the baffle with a little black model paint. once the Baffle was set, I cut holes in the cowl for fuel dot, vent line, and access needle adjustments. I am not running a choke servo or linkage. I just have a hole on the bottom of the cowl so that I can just 'finger' the choke.

Good idea on the baffle--I will be doing that as well. Nice pics also..looks like when all 3 are lined up the gear location is about the same for all three--good for me since I gotta fit it in a 6 1/2' pickup bed!

Very SCHWEET Rennie!! Ill tell you what.. I like it naked without graphics. My 88 is the same way except for 2 TBM graphics. THink Im gonna keep it that way.. Funny how the 88" looks bigger then the QQ 102" Lets us know how they compare.

Cya,
Frank

ps.Dont joke around about shoveling snow Rennie!![;)]HAHAHA!!!

Merry Chrismas to you also my brother.. Great plane you have.. I'm gonna start saving my duckets for one..
Still trying to finish my first gasser at the moment though.. You gasser guys are all genious's in my book..
Electric pattern planes are so much easier.. lol..

Happy holidays.. Looking forward to the video..

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 4:50:44 AM)

Hey all,

Glad to see the thread has been active while I have been taking care of family Xmas stuff.

I did have time to get everything ready for CG check and engine testing, but I had a couple of set-backs.

- upon final CG check, I was way nose heavy I have to mount rx batteries at the back end of the canopy area, behind the rudder servos. Because the battery leads are only so long, and I did not want to cut and splice the batt leads, so I had to redo the radio gear lay-out and shift everything back as well. Also I have a alternate ignition battery mount area behind the wingtube just in case I have to move the ignition battery there.

- Chris Hinson sent me a 5" straight SWB rudder servo arm, and the geometry for pull-pull constrols were not correct. The rudder servo arm needed to match the rudder control horns measured at 4-3/8" w/ offset, like the 4" SWB off-set servo arm. So I modified the 4" arm I had and made carbon fiber arm extensions. Worked like a champ, and now I get nice cable tension through-out the whole rudder deflection in both directions.

- One of the used Hitec HS5955TG elevator servos must have a bad circuit board, cause it would not hold programming from the Hitec Servo Programmer, so I went ahead and replaced both elevator servos just to be safe.

Everything is ready for engine test and final check. Maiden willb ethis Friday. Will have pics and video![sm=thumbup.gif]

camss69 -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 5:57:18 AM)

Did you get a weight on it?

It looks like you have everything in there but the kitchen sink!

Looking forward to the flight report!

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 1:14:21 PM)

Well the kitchen sink weighed another 10-12 pounds for the smaller kitchen. Since I am on the ground, I do not think it will be necessary, and I don't think it will Huck any better, but a urinal on the flight line?....................hmmmm[:D]

I will have an opportunity to weigh it this afternoon after engine testing and check CG one last time.

flying skunks -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 6:05:31 PM)

are you going to fly it Friday and bring it to fly on Sat. ? I would love to be there but I have to do a Maiden on Friday also..[:D]

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 7:20:20 PM)

Hey All,

Engine testing went great. Vess 28B prop, DA100 on ES Composite pipes, Running mid-grade gas, w/ Amsoil Synth. mixed at 80:1. Engine RPMs peak 6900 to 7000 rpm.

I will be doing a final check on fuel lines, check nuts and bolts, CG check and hopefully weigh it in this afternoon. Maiden tomorrow![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

That's great news Rennie[;)]Cant wait to see the video[:D]

Hooked-On-RC -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 7:44:17 PM)

Okay I checked the Exteme Flight RC website and I cannot find a listing for a 110" Yak at all. Is this a special limited release or something? Looks like a nice plane, I just ask one question, why did you not put a bellcrank on the rudder and take the stress off the rudder servo output shaft? Realizing the added cost an SWB dual servo tray with bellcrank would have been a nice addition in your case. Any weight reports yet?

AEROSHELDON -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/27/2007 10:32:28 PM)

This plane is just not out yet. The "news" section says they are on the way... I am waiting to see how y'all think this will do on an 85, since I have one. On with that build Chris!!

ultrasportpilot -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/28/2007 7:56:50 PM)

Ok guys here is Rennie's 110" Yak. The plane is not big but HUGE looks awesome in the air check out the pics that I took while the Flyin Hawaiian was doing his thing.

Ricardo

Flyin Hawaiian -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/28/2007 8:56:13 PM)

Thanks Ricardo!

Yes, today was maiden day. 1st of all Ricardo if you have any more pics please post. My camera battery died [&o](so much for being prepared)[8|], anyway John from JP Media took some Hi-def vids, and I hope that he can post this evening.

Anyway I know you guys want flight report..........

First I just want to say that the weight is not what I had wanted to see....29 lbs. off of a digital fish scale, which was always pretty accurate when I hang a 5 & 10 lb weights from it. Second I have never had a plane that weighed 29 lbs or tuned exhaust. Weather was about 78 degress with 10-15 mph from the north, down the runway.

The thing is Big as it is Awesome![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=biggrin.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=tongue_smile.gif]...and all of that stuff! Ground handling was very good. even on the ground, bigger is bettter. CG was is dead on. roll out was uneventful. Aileron trim was spot on, but the elevator trim was the only thing I had to adjust. The elevators are carrying a tad of up, about 5 clicks, typical in the 88" Yak. 1st Flight was uneventful, but the engine was a little rich and slow to spool up, but the power was there. After a couple of trim passes I tried some point rolls, on low rates (about IMAC rates). Elevators and Rudder was very sensitive for IMAC stuff. none the less, all control surfaces feed back positively and with authority. I will have to add more expo over the 40% I have dialed in to tame it down. Breaks and snaps was very good. High speed knife edge passes are very nuetral with a slight push to the wheels. I will mix in 3% for starters on the rudder to elevator mix. No mix to ailerons are needed. I have flown a couple of 40% planes before, and this Yak felt like a 40%. It can fly very slow and majestic.

3D rates are set 75-80% with throws to the bevels. Elevators 50 degrees, Rudder to max, Ail 45 deg. Waterfalls are sick, literally in its own space. Harriers, rollers, inverted harriers.............rock solid. Hovering is very lock-on. 2nd Flight I leaned out the top end a little and throttle response was much crisper. Rolling harriers can be slowed to a crawl. Feeling a little more confident with the engine, I went ahead and brought her in for a low level hover. Man she looked good. Hover locked and ready to Rock! Torque rolls were almost with no inputs, considering the wind pushed it down the runway a little. From a dead hover, yes she will rocket up to the heavens. With the combination of the DA100 / ES Composite pipes / Vess 28B, I really got more than I had expected. Power was exceptional, but peaky at the top of the power band spinning 6900-7000 rpms. All the power was in the top 25% of the throw. I will dial some throttle curve. By the way, all of the mixing I am doing is on my JR X9303 2.4g Transmitter, and programming is cake!

Now you ask me if a 29 lb 100cc 110" Yak 54 will 3D? Heck Yeah![:D] The Flyin Hawaiian is very Happy!

Video coming tonight or tomorrow.

Jake Ruddy -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/28/2007 9:02:32 PM)

Good to hear things went well!

For a DA 100 twin pipes and a plane that is 110" wingspan 29 pounds is not that bad at all. Most 35%ers are 26-28 pounds and are small compared to this plane. I think it came out just right :)

Can't wait till I have one in my basement :D

xtraflyr -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/28/2007 9:14:23 PM)

If the Flyin Hawaiian is very happy then were all happy!![;)] It sounded like a normal EF maiden flight. Can't wait to see the vid..

Thanks Rennie,

Frank

Hooked-On-RC -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/29/2007 12:49:22 AM)

Well I had a look at January's AMA Convention Exhibitor list in California and I do not see Extreme Flight on the list, that is too bad as I considering that 110" Yak but I guess they are not going to be there to get my order. I guess AW or QQ would rather have my business. Shame really what a perfect place to show off a new product on the West Coast!

Jake Ruddy -> RE: Extreme Flight 110" 100cc Yak 54 Build! (12/29/2007 1:13:03 AM)

Considering the costs of shipping planes that far back and forth (if they dont sell all that they bring) I don't blame them.

Keep in mind both the 88" Yak and Extra are selling out before they even arrive :) 110" aleady has a waiting list as well.
