Hi all!

I'm waiting for my 28% Edge V2 to arrive, and have no idea which engine I should put in it.
My plan is either a MVVS(EVO) 45 IRS/MG or the 3W-55i.
My favorite would definitely be the 3W-55i. But considering the weight of this engine (68oz / 1935g - incl. ignition), I am afraid that it could
be too heavy for the Edge. The MVVS/EVO only wheighs 54oz / 1540g, but has not the power of the 3W.

Please be so kind and tell me what you think about the weight of the 3W, and if it is suitable for the WH 28% Edge.

Thanks.

"Too heavy" is subjective. The plane will certainly fly fine with the 3w, but it woulod fly better with a lighter engine. But with less power other things are limited.

Whay you really want is 3w power at MVVS 45 weight.

That is exactly the problem. I doubt that the MVVS 45 has enough power for advanced 3Ding. Tough I am not yet caplable of doing
advanced 3D , the last thing I want is to have the weaker MVVS replaced as soon as I am.
I am planless...

What would you prefer - better flying or more power?
Is there a chance that some CF-replacements (spinner, wingtube) could even out the additional engine-weight a little?

Well the 3W appears to be about a pound or pound and a half heavier than the DA50 on my Wild Hare Extra. My Extra was built totally stock using the Wild Hare hardware kit and came in right at 15 lbs 10 onces. It had monster power with the DA50 at this weight. After the first 20-30 flights I deceided to put the Extra on a diet and droped about 18-20 onces. The diet included carbon fiber gear and no wheel pants. Carbon wing and Stab tube. Esprit light weight spinner and changing from dual LiIon batteries, switches and regs to a single battery and equipement. I also changed to Titanium axles and Kavan light weight wheels. All of that dropped the weight of the plane to 14 1/2 lbs and now it has more power than I can really use. (I know you can never have too much power)

I see no reason why you couldn't use the 3W and still keep the weight of the plane around 15 1/2 to 16 lbs. The 3w would certainly have the power to handle that much weight. On the other hand the plane is still going to fly really good without spending a bunch of money to buy the weight down. If it were me and that was my engine of choice I would build the plane with the stock pieces and just enjoy flying it till I wanted to move into hard core 3D and then I would lighten it.

The one area you might think about up front is ballance. A lot of the weight I took out of the Extra came in front of the CG. With the heavy 3w you will probably want to put the rudder servo in the tail and think about a way to get your receiver battery back that direction if need.

By the way, I just completed the Baby Edge with a heavy Evolution 26gt gas engine up front and am really pleased with the power and way the plane flys.

Hope that helps.

If you already have it, use it. So the plane ends up at, say, 17 pounds. So what really. It will still fly super well. Moving things around to hit a good c/g is not that difficult. Just look at it for awhile and it will all come together. Rudder servo in the tail for sure. A light spinner absolutely. A carbon tube. No cans if you don't have noise restrictions. Use the stock tailwheel. Avoid carbon props because they are kinda heavy. She's a great plane and will easily tolerate the extra weight and still have good performance.

Thanks for the helpful replies so far. I'm less concerned now about the plane becoming too heavy with the 3W.

I also found the downonthedeck-review on the Version 1 Edge (see it here) where a 3W-50 with cans was installed without any further weight-tweaking. That is interesting as the 3W-50 is actually still a bit heavier than my 3W-55 (well 3 ounces but anyway)
They also used a pull-pull-system on the rudder and did not mention problems with the CG.

Well anyway it seems to be a gut decision...

I have now extended my engine choice options with the DA-50R. I've finally located a dealer for Desert Aircraft here in Austria that offers it for a reasonable
price. Maybe this is the right choice, as it is pretty much between the MVVS and 3W - considering both power and weight.
Problem is that in case of a warranty issue the engine has a looong way to go from where i live, and 3W/MVVS are "neighbours".

If you are going with 3W get the 56 twin, same weight, Smooth as silk from idle up. It needs a two into one exhaust to keep all up weight down. There are vids of this plane and engine set up on another "DOD" type site. Not me. The plane hardly notices the extra weight.
If you want a single go for the DA. Cant beat the weight to power. And you will never run out of help from people willing to share their experiences running it.

You can check my profile to see my last posts and read what I have done to make the 3W 56 a top choice 50cc engine.

The MVVS 45 on a can will work!!! I have 2 WH 50cc birds flying on them, one on a can and one a pitts, the can bird has more power but only about 5 oz's heavier.
