But no matter how good we make them look for this once a year event, they still all end up like this. Matt

Matt,

Beautifu shot of that nice Fokker.

What kind of camera do you use?

I used to write articles on Jets and Giant Scale and loved to get those shots with a clear model against a slightly blurry background as they tend to give a 3-D look.

With the manual focus film SLR's you could pretty much control what you ended up with.

Guess I need a digital SLR with manual focus capability.

Thanks for the compliment Dan, it's my wife Tracey who is the photographer, a hobby of hers. She gets some great car racing shots as well, that pix was with A Pentax SLR but she did use auto focus to get it. Over the years she has snaped ome great combat shots, most of what I post are her work. She has just updated her camera again to the latest Pentax ( again! ). This seems to follow closely behind a new transmitter update of mine. Hmmmmm. Here is another one of her combat pixs. Matt

Matt,

I'd say Tracey is doing a great job.

I remember another magazine writer asking me for in-flight shots of jets because he couldn't figure out how to do it.

One common mistake people make with prop aircraft is using too fast a shutter speed. A fast shutter will stop a prop cold and it looks like all the engines have stopped.

1/500 or slower will usually still show the prop spinning.

Yeah, if Tracey needs a new camera or lens, buy it for her.

Dan

Matt, I should have answered last week, but I didn´t want to interrupt the interesting discussion about photography. I learned a lot. Yes my Halberstadt is electric an all my biplanes. (Kontronik Fun 480 with gearbox, 12x6 propellar and 3 Lipos, weigth 3 lbs) It is scrachbuilt from my own plans in last winter and it is still flying. (In old Europe, we catch only streamers, we don´t get points for a mid-air)

Thanks for the reply Henner, I have plans to do some WW1 electric soon, but not for combat. There have been quite a lot of plans in some of the scale mags over the last few years for the old speed 400 size. I have collected quite a few, now all I need is the motivation to get started on one. A few years back there was an electric powered fighter at our event but the owner of the field was not keen for it to be use in combat due to the dry grass and the possibility of a lipo battery starting a fire. Flew well though. Matt.

Hi FA,
of course I could share my plans. Halby is a rare bird. We had a discussion on the Halberstadt in the scale forum, think it was last year. But my Halberstadt is not as detailled as the real scale models. E.g no droop in the trailing edge of the lower wing and no working flying and landing wires. I´m asking my friend and designer to make a PDF (or something like this) file from my sketches. So I could send the plans by e-mail.
Yours Henner

Thats the first thing I thought when I read the title.......who in the world would spend the time it takes to build an antique biplane , just to have it torn up in combat.....a true RC'er would I guess...those are some really nice looking planes...I build to race and crash 1/2a planes but , they are quicker builds....Rog

You are not wrong about that Rog. I have just spent the better part of two weeks leave repairing one, and building two new Fokker D7's for the first week in April. The closer it gets, the more motovated I get. The spirit in which we fly is what makes it all worth while, when there is a midd-air, the cheers are deafning. Then there is the photo shoot of the downed aircraft, loads of fun. You never see people getting upset, just lots of smiles. Matt

You Aussie's might want to check us out in Canada at www.rccanada.ca in the Combat threads.

We have a very lively bunch of SPAD WW1 builders and the combat events are great. Models include the Albatros D.Va, Fokker D7 and Dr1, Sopwith Camel and Triplane, SE5a, Bristol and French SPAD fighters.

Attached is a pic of my unfinished Albatros.

I'd love to see some of your plans if you have any available.

Marc
