sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (1/5/2008 3:48:31 AM)

Attached are a few pictures of the Napier getting ready for the paint. The model has been primed and wet sanded, down to 1000 grit, and is ready for the color coat.

skull1971 -> RE: q 40 (1/5/2008 7:01:55 AM)

Looks GREAT keep us up to date,,, please!!! I'm thinking about one for myself too.

Kevin Matney -> RE: q 40 (1/5/2008 1:01:01 PM)

Go back and sandit 1 more time ,but with 600 no finer. If you don.t the paint will peel when you masked it off for a trim color

sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (1/24/2008 4:46:44 AM)

The Napier has the color coat in these pictures. The bottom of the airplane is predominantely red in the picture.

The clear coat goes on tomorrow.

Your plane looks great keep up the great work

JFisher304 -> RE: q 40 (1/25/2008 1:10:53 AM)

Very nice. I really like the classic feel that paint job has.

jeffk464 -> RE: q 40 (1/25/2008 6:51:22 AM)

Very nice indeed, be sure to keep us informed on the maiden.

sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (2/9/2008 4:01:14 AM)

The radio installation is now complete and weather permitting I will make the maiden flight this weekend.

The first picture shows the antenna installation of a Futaba 2.4GHz receiver. The next couple pictures show that there is plenty of room for full size servos. Expect a 2 ounce weight penalty verses a mini servo installation.

I have had good luck with the Futaba 6EX-2.4GHz system. They are available at very competitive prices and are ideal for racing. It is a computer radio and the transmitter supports 6 different models. All the dual rate functions are on a single switch so it make it easy to switch to high rate after the engine is shut off. JR servos plug right into the receiver and work fine.

sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (2/10/2008 12:39:38 AM)

The picture shows the guys from Kevin Lewing's Body Shop that helped me finish the model. Thanks Guys. I couldn't finish it without you.

I made the first flights today. Wow! This thing is smooth and fast. I set it up with minimal throw and controls were positive and precise, even with inexpensive servos. I made wide pylon turns to familiarize myself and before the end of the flight I was comfortable with the controls.

The Thunder Tiger motor ran great but would not shut off (this was later fixed) so I ran it out of gas. I then switched it to high rate and glided it in for a smooth landing. I was pleasantly surprised because it actually glides very good. All in all a very good first flight.

jeffk464 -> RE: q 40 (2/10/2008 12:43:21 AM)

Glad to hear it flies as good as it looks, I think I'm going to have to get one.

Kevin Matney -> RE: q 40 (2/11/2008 2:59:46 AM)

I was sure you would do Matney's Models proud.

PHall -> RE: q 40 (3/4/2008 10:58:02 PM)

I was so glad to find this thread since I have been looking for an affordable Q40 and had basically decided on MAtney Models. How fast should one of these go with a Jett sport 40?

sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (3/5/2008 2:28:29 AM)

This type of model flies around 130 mph with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40.

The guys that race with the true racing engines, Jett and Nelson, get around 170 to 190 mph.

I would expect that you will get somewhere over 130 and less than 190 mph.

You might consider the Thunder Tiger Pro 40 if you want to race. There is a sport class being considered (425) for this engine.

sahartman21 -> RE: q 40 (3/14/2008 2:51:47 AM)

I made several more flights on the Napier. The following are the suggested control throws:

Ailerons: Hi rate 5/16", Low 3/16"
Elevator: Hi rate 1/4", Low 5/32"
Rudder: 1/2"

Use Hi rate during take off and landing. For the rest of the flying use Low rate.

Initially I used a 6 ounce tank in my model. I later switched to a 4 ounce tank and still have plenty of time to fly the pylons and fly around another couple minutes.

For props the APC 9x7 and 9x8 work well.

Attached is a copy of the instructions. The original document was written in Word and did not convert very well to .txt.

I have a full set of pictures, typical orders, and other documents. Just send me an email at sahartman21athotmail.com. Change the at to @ in the address.

Good luck and turn left! [:D]
