Depending what you mean by affordable, purchase just the fuselage of the model you want then do the rest of the work yourself. Build the wings, tail parts and all of the other pieces.

Or, just go to one of the bigger races and sort through the garbage cans at the end of the day. With some work, you could piece a fuse and tail feathers together, but you would most likely need to make your own foam wing.

The closest inexpensive similar planes are the Kangke SuperKraft F3D (which has been discontinued, but occasionaly show up on the Auction Site), there is an ARF called the LR-1, not sure if they are still available or not, but that may be option also.

Matney models offers a couple of Q40 kits. YOu get a fuse and foam cores for about $125 i think.

I just completed a build thread in the Extreme speed forum. I think it is somewhat similar. This kit is $80.00. I really do not think you will find anything cheap that is currently being flown competitively. By this I mean under $400.00.

I am building a Matney models "Napier" Q-40 short kit. The kit is $125 and you should be able to finish it up for less than half price of one of the composite models currently being sold.

This one was my first Q-40 and it is going together fine. I am taking pictures of construction and should complete the model in a few weeks.

Sahartman, could you post some pictures of the napier, I would especially like to see a picture of the rear stab area. I've been thinking about getting one for a long time.

I started the Napier with the idea of going fast without spending a lot of money. In some of the forums a sport version of Q-40 with Thunder Tiger Pro 40s was discussed. Below is how to install one in a Matney Models "Napier".

I am near Amarillo, Texas and it looks like there are a lot of racers in Missouri and the surrounding area. The Amarillo area flies the Club 40 racers.

It appears that there might be enough airplanes around to fly Q-40 Sport Class with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40. I am about 7 hours from Wichita, Kansas. Around 8 hours from Joplin, MO or Kansas City.

Kevin Matney from Matney Models indicated that he has Jett motor mounts drilled and tapped for the Thunder Tiger (TT) motor. A lot of the current Q-40 models are equipped with a Jett motor mount. You might be able to change out your existing mount and install one for the TT.

I usually make a trip through Wichita and Kansas City a couple times a year to see my Dad.

Are there any active q40 sport racing, I haven't heard much about it since it was first set up.
My flying field doesnt even do the q500 tt40 class race. :(.

In 2007 there were no Q-40 or Q500 races here at all.

There is a good chance that Q-40 Sport could become a normal event in 2008. It will really take someone promoting it to become popular.

I flew Q500 back in 1983 and 1995. Those events became popular in the area after someone took the lead and promoted the event. I am hopeful that this will happen with Q-40 sport.

I see the biggest advantage to the sport class (either Q-40 or Q500) is cost. A glass kit can be built for about half the price of a composite kit. Assume around $300 for the the Q-40 model. A TT 40 is available for around $85. Compare $385 plus radio for a Q-40 Sport compared to a composite Q-40 with racing engine.

I believe 2008 will be the deciding year for this class. At least for me, I can afford $385 but it is unlikely that I would spend $1000 to $1500 to see if I liked it.[8|]

Your not that far from Wichita Falls,There was a Q40 race there in Oct. Check the NMPRA site for the next race there and bring your plane. You may get some more people interested in a Q40 sport class. With all the Nelson SS engines for sale online a new TT.40 isn't a whole lot cheaper at the moment. I think it could be a whole lot of fun even it you don't have anyone to race with. I'd say it's a safe bet it's the fastest plane at your field!!!
