An Ft-300 is way too big for just a Quarter Scale Cub. Typically a four stroke 1.20 or twin 1.30 would be your upper size limit. 1/4 scale aint that gig anymore. The Ft-300 would be more suited for a 1/3 scale cug. An FT-300 is 50cc, most 1.3 scale cub's use 62 to 80 cc 2-stroke gas. Gasoline is not as powerful as Nitro-Methane soooo....a 50 cc Nitro engine can suffice. Where in the hell did you get the idea of a 50cc in a 1/4 scale cub??? I fly mine with a Saito .91....????

Full Size Cub= 36 ft. wingspan
1/2 scale = 18 ft.
1/3 scale = 12 ft.
1/4 scale = 9 ft

so on and so fourth...

Yes and the piper j3
Full scale = 65hp
1/2 scale = 32.5 hp
1/3 scale = 21.666 hp
1/4 scale =16.25 hp

since os claims it puts out 4 HP to be "scale" your under powered no?

You cannot use those figures based on Horsepower. As size goes up, power goes up exponentialy. I don't have the formula for you, but 12-15hp motors fly IMAC (Extra's, Caps, etc...) routinely and they can do much more than thier fullscale counterparts. If you hung a DA 150 cc (16 hp) on a little 1/4 scale cub it would rip the wings off guaranteed. Trust me, a 1.20 four stroke flies a 1/4 scale Cub very well. Look at the specs for engine requirements for any 1/4 scale Cub...

The 1.60 usually refers to the OS or Magnum Flat Twin 1.60 4-stroke, which has less power than a Saito 1.50 four stroke. I don't know what else to tell you...an FT-300 is way too much...I have been flying these things for 30 years, but what do I know... Do a little research. The FT-300 would be a good choice for a 1/3 rd scale...see the specs on the motor on the last link I copied... Do a search on RCU in the Forums on "Cubs", find a thread that addresses 1/4 scale size, and see what everyone else is using. Just trying to help you here buddy...

Using your formula, a 1/4 scale Extra 300 (300 hp) would have a 75 horsepower motor. Most 1/4 Extras fly with a 1.20 to a 1.80 size engine. Most 1/3 scale Extras fly with a 100 cc motor which is 6.1 cu. in. (10-12hp) not 100 hp as in using your formula. Like I say the bigger they get they need more power. I have seen may 1/4 scale cubs fly with a .61 (10cc) 2-stroke...

That system of calculating horsepower has to be a joke right? It is about power to weight ratio. Figure out a full scale cub's HP per pound and apply that to the all up weight of a quarter scale cub. I think you will find most of our RC models are grossly overpowered.

You're way off. A 1.20 to 1.50 fourstroke single is perfect for a 1/4 scale cub, and it's still a little overpowered yet.
